In June, I got a very short fade haircut and I'm growing out my hair....
Two questions:
1) How long will it approx take to become shoulder length from the fade haircut?
2) Is anyone here losing their hair yet still growing it out.
Hair grows at 1/2 inch per month. You can do the math.
I've seen lots of guys with balding spots on top who are still wearing long hair.
I've been growing my hair out since December - It's to the bottom of my collar in the back and to the bottom of my ear lobes on the sides... as far as losing hair - I don't notice too much hair in the shower drain, but there is some - and at 57, I am def getting thinning hair on top... but as this is now my bucket list goal - I don't care about the balding spot - it's inevitable
Hi Sad Short Hair,
I would guess it would take you a minimum of 18-24 months of no trim growing to get to solid one-length hair at shoulders. Of course, if you have a number 0 it could be longer than a number 3 fade. But you can go from Sad Short Hair to Happy Long Hair! I highly recommend it!
I am not losing any hair thank goodness!
Long Hair In Albany is correct though.

I think its a good sign that even though I got it cut June 6th, the sides which were faded are all returned--on the sides if I was to put the hair down (it's still too short to go downward it self but long enough to pull down), it's just over the top of the ear. back is almost full and even the neck hairs (the scruffy hairs) are almost full grown back.
Yes, it is a good sign that your hair is growing. You have to wait for the hair to even out all over your head. When you have a fade or other standard men's haircut, the hair is usually long on top and short on sides and back. Unless you want to grow a mullet, normally a man grows his hair all one length. Of course, you could always grow it and have layers in it. I guess it depends on what you are going for.

The idea is I want to grow a mullet that is about shoulder length....Could that be done in less than two years, since I'm only growing the back and rear sides?
The fact that you are only growing out the sides and back doesn't shorten or lengthen the time to grow it. But I think you could get shoulder length in about 2 years with no trimming.

I do not have shoulder length hair but I can tell you from my personal experience that my hair has been growing at a rate of 1/2" per month. Some people can grow their hair longer but 1/2" seems to be the norm. In November 2012 I had a fade haircut and decided to started growing it out. for me, the first few months were the most difficult because my hair had been short for so long. If you want to see the progress from then until now you can check out my YouTube channel. Good luck!
