Hey guys my name is Patrick. I am going to be a senior in high school and have been growing my hair out for a while. It is getting pretty long, especially in back, but there are still a bunch of bangs and stuff that wont go in a ponytail. Mostly I have been wearing hats to keep the hair out of my face during the summer and stuff and then I can tie the rest in a ponytail if I want, which I kind of like. BUt I can't wear hats at school so that isnt going to work anymore and I am not supposed to have my hair down since it is long. We just moved and I dont want to cause problems at the new school. Anything you guys can think of? My sister says I can put the top part in a ponytail to hold the bangs and then put everything in a ponytail, but I think that looks a bit goofy on me. Do any of you wear your hair like that? Anyway I think in a couple of months I will be able to tie a good ponytail, but for now I need help. thanks
Bandana, Alice band or put it in a tail and use some lacquer to hold the wayward parts.
Hi Patrick,
Unfortunately I cannot help you with restraining methods much. I always wear mine down, but it isn't as long as yours. maybe you could put your hair in some sort of bun. If it were me, I would try my best to be able to at least wear a tail. I would even try to find a less restrictive school. I sure would hate to see you cut your wonderful hair! Please try to find a way not to cut! I am definitely inspired by your hair!
Hope you have a great week and good wishes at your new school!
Ted
Heya Pat! Great looking head of hair there, my friend :)
The restraining method you are describing is one I have often used while growing my hair out (And will again use when it's long enough again in the near future).
Tying one high half-tail on the top or the crown of the head, and then tying another one lower, gathering the rest of the hair, always worked for me, and I have much wavier hair than yours, so it should work great for you as well.
Besides that, I would suggest either a thin headband or some gel, in order to keep the hairs which do not go into a tail, from getting in your eyes!
Keep us updated man, and don't cut the hair!
What some gel and bobby pins will do!
Here's me right now, on my way to work, and my hair is much shorter than yours :)
Coolest teacher in the world. Hehe:)
Keep up the good work my friend1
Ted
Hehe.. thanks, Ted!
Don't know about that, but I know today was a good hair day!
Extra strong hairgel for the win! ;)
Hi Raul,
Happy to hear of the good hair day! You know you will have nothing but good days with your hair longer! Yeah that gel works wonders! I don't use it because I'm too lazy to. I just fight with my hair through the crazy stages. Hopefully it will be over very soon! Great day to ya my friend!
Ted
Raul! dude, you know what you are doing. I'm going to have try that one day. I would like to see how you do that.
Christian
Thanks, Christian! :)
Well, I do have quite less curl than you, but the trick for me is getting my hair totally soaked, as in leaning into the shower cabinet and getting it really drenched in water, without using any shampoo or conditioner (seeing as this is not part of the washing ritual).
Once it's all well I slightly towel-dry it, withough using too much force, which would in turn make it more unruly and fluffy. Then I use my bristle boar brush to comb all the hair backwards, and apply the little ponytail at the back with as much hair as I possibly can.
The next part is applying a nice amount of gel (L'Oreal StudioLine FX InisiGel) and smooth it all backwards, being especially careful on the sides, to make it all stick as well as possible.
The last touch is applying 2 bobby pins behind the back of my ears, where the hair is too short to reach the actual ponytail, to avoid the extreme curling upwards and towards my gauges.
I hope it was clear enough of an explanation, and I could surely video it for you one day if needed! Give it a shot! :)
That was a very clear explanation, you walked me right through it. What a great style for the in-between stage! I'll have to try this out sometime =)
Awesome! Would love to see and hear all about the results :)
I'll be the first to let you know!
WOW !!! - a grown out layered mullet I think: ( know that well ) - 'HIDE-DA-SCISSORS' - just let it grow, is my advice - fantastic mane = thick & healthy ...
That's what I was thinking CEM. It does sort of look like a layered mullet. Looks good, but I myself would love to see it all one length! Please keep it growing, Patrick!
Ted
Hey Patrick,
Your looks great, MAAAAN! I think if you should try and put in a ponytail with a little gel to tame the fly aways if you have any. I think your hair will still look good even if you have some loose hairs.
Christian
Well, considering that I just graduated (more specifically, dropped out right before graudation... stupid PE credit) from high school, I could probably give some advice:
What's your school dress code like? There are three cases:
1. No hair on collar, and not halfway down the ears: I'm sorry, but practically no way of getting around that, unless if you want to wear a wig. In this case, you pretty much have to choose between keeping your hair or keeping your enrollment.
2. No hair on shoulders: There probably isn't any rule about buns. There probably isn't anything prohibiting loophole abuse.
3. Long hair is frowned on: Screw the rules, because there aren't any! This is probably the best case scenario.
4. No hats: Then don't wear any. You could get a more masculine or low key headband, should you decide to like that look. Or keep your head up -- then your hair won't have the tendency to cover your eyes.
This is if you're at a private school. I was in a school whose dress code was in first class. Turns out that if you avoided the administration vigilantly enough, you could get some hair on the shoulders =P. Granted, I originally grew out my hair to flip off the administration and play chicken with my record, but now that I've had it long, I like my look... so I'll be keeping it long. So far, I'm at the 3.5 month mark from a #4 buzz.
As for college advice, apart from the typical advice from College confidential (there are good parts of the site, but a lot of the forums are toxic... just giving you a heads up), specifically for having long hair:
Writer's block? You could write something about growing out your hair. Although it'll probably be cheesy and not as good.
If you have to do interviews: Keep your hair clean, and you could either wear it down or up, depending on your preferences. It's definitely going to be noticed. The whole point of the interview is to make sure that you're not a boring person. So if you can keep the conversation going and keep them interested for the entire time, you effectively passed the interview. Dress well, with at least a polo. They're not really that intimidating, unless if you think that they are.
Schools that require interviews: Ivy League (all of them!), MIT, Stanford, and other similar elite schools. USC interviews scholarship applicants.
Good luck with your final year of high school. If you want to ask more about college or my time at high school, my email is linked.
I started growing my hair long in 1964, then just let it grow
and grow from 1964 on. I got lots of compalints from the school
adminsistration but I said screw it and kept my long hair long
and refused to cut it. I got sent home a number of times, got
suspended a number of times, I still refused to cut it. And my
mom sided with me and supported my decision the matter. Mom and dad were divorced and dad lived several states away. So he had no say in the matter.
There were several things that helped me in this battle with
the school administration: 1. I had good grades
2. I didn't do drugs. 3. I was not a trouble maker.
The only complaints I got were in regards to my long hair and
the dress code violations. The bottom line for me is I did
graduate and managed to keep my long hair throughout the school years.
BTW, when I applied to college my hair was long but none of the colleges I applied to required an interview.
Your hair is totally awesome!!! I don't know what to suggest on hiding it - but CUTTING it in any way, shape or form would be criminally insane!!! :)

Hey Patrick, hopefully you can find a look that are happy with, and satisfies your school's dress code. May I ask how long you've been growing it out?
-Tommy
Maybe like a year and a half.
Thanks for the tips.
Thanks guys. I found I can pin the big pieces in with some hair pins on each side and it doesnt look too bad though it makes me feel a bit self conscious, but I like the ponytail look on myself at least. Hope there are some girls that dig it too.
