I've been listening to alot of Jason Castro lately, a dude I've been greatly impressed with already back when he was merely an americal idol contestant (seasons 7 I think). Now, he's got some outstandingly wonderful dreadlocks, and I started wondering how would it look and feel to have them :)
This would only be a plan B eventually, when my hair has gotten long(er) and I would perhaps be frustrated with it or would have toughts on giving up on it... REALLY like the look, and been reading a bunch on dreadheadhq.com.
Definitely a risky, expensive and yet, exciting idea.
Does any of you guys have any experience with dreadlocks, having had them in the past, or knowing someone close to you who does? Would love to hear all about it.
Here's a video og Jason's to let you get an idea of what I think are neat, lovely dreadlocks:
Wow Raul you are really jumping the gun on the hair thing!lol.Your not even out of the awkward stage and your already contemplating dreadlocks! Hey nothing wrong with dreads but maybe wait and see what your natural longhair looks like before thinking in those lines. Dreads require some decent length so you'll have plenty of time to think about it over the years my friend;) Anyway enjoy what you've achieved so far as tomorrow is another day. Cheers

Hey Mark!
Not at all, my friend... just contemplating all the options one has when having long hair! There's so much more than simply spiking it up with short hair!
Definitely realize that dreadlocks would require nice, long hair, and that it would be a one way ticket to eventually short hair again, so no thoughts on doing anything like that anytime soon, just thinking out loud... that's what we gemini do ;)
Hi Raul,
No problem thinking of options to do with you hair but knowing that if the dreadlocks don't work for you then likely that'll be the end of your longhair. With that said would you go through regrowing it out again or just throw in the towel and stay with short hair. Something to think about;) Cheers
Mârk
Well Mark, seeing as if and when I WOULD go for dreadlocks, I will need the same amount of patience and discipline as growing it out at all (they need at least a year to mature, during which they can see really messy.. sounds familiar?), I would definitely only cut it all off after a few good years of having them, and seeing as I would need at least 3-4 years to even get to that length at all.. yeah, this is just theoretical talk.
And no, no more short hair for me, I've had enough of that for the past 5 years, thank you ;)
Ok Raul just don't want you making a hasty decision just because you saw a video of some guy with awesome dreads.I know your much more responsible than that as you've been around;) Maybe try on a wig of dreads just to satisfy your curiosity because we all know what curiosity did to the poor cat! Lol. Cheers
Mârk
Totally understand, Mark.. and as you say, I HAVE been around and planning on being around for a while longer indeed... the cat ain't getting skinned, hehe :D
What do you think of Jason's dreads, btw? I've seen many people which I *don't* like dreads on, but on him, they look fantastic! The thichness and the length is just awesome, if you ask me :)
Hi Raul,
Well as you know you'll have lots of time to think about the dreads but of course I'm sure you'll want to experience your hair in its natural state first and might not even want dreads once you see how your longhair looks. You know, the finished product :)
I do agree that Jason's dreads look fabulous on him but a lot might have to do with his facial structure just as it seems to promote the dread look. Some people just can't pull off the look but he certainly doesn't have that problem;)
Hope your weekend activities went well :)Cheers
Mârk
That is completely true, Mark... and the whole face shape issue is really something that is so individual, that it's really tough to try imagining them on myself.
I do agree that LOTS of people look like hell with dreadlocks, so it probably has to do with Jason being a good looking cat in the first place.
Thanks for the tips, and yeah, I will definitely be working on getting my hair long first and foremost, no dreading at 6" here, I promise! :D
Upon looking at that video it seemed obvious to me that Jason has natural good looks and sports the dreads very well:)Put those same dreads on me and I feel it would be a totally different result and probably not a good one.lol You have a great look too Raul but whether or not dreads would work for you probably depends on the thickness of your mane.I agree with Kansasdude that my fine hair makes the possibility of dreads a no go if I ever thought about wanting them.Cheers my friend.
Mârk
I can't say I have any personal experience with dreads outside of interacting with a customer that has them. He had hair much like yours and I asked him one day what prompted the change to dreads. His reply was that he got tired of being the "Jesus looking dude", which upon reflection really did describe how he looked, a thin guy with a beard and long wavy brown hair. While dreads did give him a completely different vibe, in his case I certainly wouldn't call it for the better.
As for dreads being a one-way ticket, I have heard of people who've successfully undone them, though it was a long drawn out process that gave no guarantees of success.
Whether dreads would work for you comes down to a couple factors, one of which is hair type. If you have course and heavy hair, then dreading should work great. If have fine or thin hair like Mârk and I, then dreads would be a poor choice. The second thing is what your terminal length is, you've got to have length for impressive looking dreads.
Finally, consider if you dread your options on what you can do with your hair during the course of the day becomes very limited. You pretty much have to either wear it down or put it in one of those baggy hats.
The choice is up to you. Good luck on whatever path you decide to take. :-)

Hey Dale!
Thanks for the detailed answer, my friend! :)
I do agree with you that for people like me with thicker, more coarse hairtypes, dreading would be much easier than for you and Mark's type, where you have lovely fine hair which would get loose and slip out of the dreads more often than not.
I do agree that for dreads to really look great, they need be at least at lower-back length, though many start with as little as 6" and let them grow from there.
Either way, I am going to have "plain old" long hair for at least a couple of years, before thinking og doing anything like that, thanks :)
Hi Raul,
The way I see it you should do what makes you happy. It's your hair and your decision. I do think going for dreadlocks is a major commitment though. In my opinion, dreadlocks require even more patience than simply growing long hair.
I do believe you would look great with dreadlocks. But then again, you would look good with messy hair:) I would be curious to know if and when you decide to go this route. I do have to appreciate your adventurous attitude when it comes to your hair though. At any rate, please keep your hair growing!
Ted
Thanks Ted!
As you say, deciding on going with dreadlocks is an even thougher teste than "simply" growing your hair out, seeing as one has not only to grow one's hair and go through the dreaded awkward stage, but even after the backcoming treatment, one still has to let the dreads mature for a year or so, during which they look rather bad, according to most people who have gotten the treatment.
I will have to think of this long and hard, but even if I decide I am happy with my natural long hair (or colored, or straightened, or whatever), when the day comes and I know I want to get back to short, I will at LEAST give dreads a try... need to cross that off my checklist in life :)
Thanks for your wishes and comments, and have a great day on there, in the great state of Texas!
By the way, I think Jason looks great with the dreadlocks! I really like the different colors he has in them. The guy is very handsome to begin with.

Hey Raul
I was thinking about dreads for a while, almost did it too, but I wrote down all the pros and cons on a piece of paper and in the end it just didn't add up for me.
For one thing you will lose half your length. Over the course of the first year it will get shorter until they mature. Also if you don't dry them properly then they rot. You can take them out but it's a long job - I chatted with a person that dreads hair and I have it on good authority that yes they do look great but they are not maintenance free.
In my opinion you have not reached longhairdom yet and it's too early to think about dreading. You can't rush things. I would say wait until you have five years growth before undertaking this, then you can look at it wisely and objectively.
Long hair is a lifestyle not just a look and it takes commitment.
Good luck with your decision.
Hey Nuttidave, and sorry for the late reply!
I appreciate your detailed answer sharing your thoughts and opinions on dreadlocks!
As I said, I will first grow my hair out to around shoulderblade/lower back length, before I decide on anything. If during any phase of the proccess I grow tired of the hair and might contemplate cutting it short again, I will definitely do the dreadlocks as an in between phase :)
Thanks!
