the posts between 2004 and 2006 not in the archives?
Can anyone tell me? Jason? Justin?
Victor and I were the ones involved in the archive project back then, so I can provide some answers.
The posts up to October 11, 2004, were all processed to go into the archives by Victor by hand. This was very tedious work, and the work kept getting further and further behind.
On June 12, 2006, we decided the archiving was going to have to be automated or it would never get done. We began saving messages then in a format that would work with an automated process. I became very ill in July 2006 and was unable to proceed with the project. I surprised my doctors by not dying, and by March 2007 I had recovered enough to be able to write the software to handle posts made after June 12, 2006. This took me about four hours.
By then the unarchived posts from 2004 to 2006 were a year old, and no one wanted to do all the many hours (more like "weeks") of work to manually archive them. Those files may be around somewhere, or parts of them may be found on sites like search engines that periodically archive web pages. However, it's doubtful anyone would want to spend the time now to dig around to find whatever files are now available and then do all the work to put them on line.
For awhile the site was too slow to chomp through all the archives because they had become too numerous. The archive was then broken up into chunks of about six months each. It seems like the site now is fast enough that would no longer be necessary. The web host, like all of us at home, periodically replaces their computers with faster ones.
Bill
Hi Bill,
Well, I will be very happy to say I am so glad you did not pass away! May you have continued good health my friend! I will certainly keep you in my thoughts and prayers!
Also, I thank you for keeping this board up and running along with our great moderators! I can't even begin to tell you how much I enjoy this board! Please keep up the good work!
Ted
Well, Ted, besides the obvious impact on my husband and me, the my sudden illness sure gave Victor and me a scare. The survival of MLHH depended on the two of us, and we then realized the community was far too important to its users for its fate to rest on the continued availability of just two guys. This realization led us to turn the site over to the moderators, a group that can continually renew itself with new workers as needed. This depth in staff was healthy for MLHH. You never want a crucial task in an enterprise that only one guy can do.
Now neither Victor nor I have any management duties at all, so yes, we know MLHH can run without us, because it has for a few years now. We all owe the moderators our thanks and gratitude for making the site "just keep on ticking".
Bill
Amen to what Ted said -- and again to you, Bill, I love love LOVE hearing the historical details re. the earlier days of MLHH... This place is like no other!!

Hi Ken,
I hope you're doing well you handsome dude you!
Ted
.
Hi Bill,
I am so happy that you and Victor had the foresight that you did. It is always good to have "redundant" management in an enterprise. thanks to you and the moderators for keeping this wonderful community going! I do wish continued good health to you and Larry!
Ted
WOW, I love reading about the background history -- of anything, really; but of course with MLHH having a very prominent place in my heart, even more-so in this case!
Amazing how little awareness there is of all the volunteer hours that are needed behind-the-scenes. My involvement on the Moderating Crew a few year ago gave me a small taste of all the work involved; but still, I view that era with both gratitude and pride in the fact that I was able to contribute at least a little SOMEthing back to this wonderful community. Without you and Victor, however, my guess is that MLHH wouldn't even be here at all today.
I am so grateful for (and also envious of) all of your technical knowledge -- I wish my brain ticked that way, too!! But hey, we all have our talents (mine is simply combing my hair - LOL).... And I am so grateful you survived that medical ordeal, and now appear to have bounced back thriving!!!
It's been cool being a part of this community -- and YOU are one of the reasons I continue to find it a joy to always come back to!
Long Lox 4ever,
Ken
Hi Ken,
I am in total agreement with you here! I am so appreciative of everyone who is involved with keeping this board clean and a great place to visit! One of these days when I get some extra money I am going to click that "donate" link! Lord knows I have received countless amounts of enjoyment from this board! So, thanks a bunch to the powers that be at the MLHH!
Ted
...I understand. So satisfying to know why the posts are not archived. On the other hand, I'm now aware how much work you guys put into this place. Doanting money would be the least thing I could do, since I owe you guys so much. And even though I'm not too keen on the design of this hyperboard (I have read the FAQ and know why you refuse to change it), I appeciate it.
On a side-note: I'm glad you beat the illness. I doubt MLHH would be the same without you.
