Some of you older guys might remember the TV show - My Three Sons with Fred MacMurray - I grew up on this show. Well, I happened to find a "3 sons" marathon on TV today - one of the shows I had to share with you guys - Chip grew his hair long and Uncle Charlie took issue with it - Dad let Chip have it long knowing and trusting that Chip would come to his senses eventually - well, Chip did finally cut it on his own... I had to chuckle... and thought to myself - well, I haven't "come to my senses" yet. HAHA... Sure is a step back in time to attitudes I remember so well growing up... My friend in Albany who has had his hair long since the 60s will also remember this, too... as well as some of you other 50ish and 60ish guys!
Hope you are enjoying your Sunday! Celebrating 8 months since a hair cut here.
I do well remember the attitude, Though I was one of many who started combing his hair differently 9And latting it grow) after that fateful Feb. Sunday evening in 1964, I was one of the few who did not relent. My parents gave it a game try to discourage me. But I just muled up. There last word on the subject (might have been mid '65) was so long as I keep it neat and clean. thay had no issue. I did just that and they indeed said not another word. I did have to suffer the slings and arrows of cataclls and comments form others. as well as various authority figures from school admins to the local cops. The coach took me off the track team unless I cut my hair. I did not and unlike in Hollywood and TV. I stayed off and they lost the meet. So be it. My hair was only to my shoulders at the time, well maybe just past. here is shot of me in late '68 I was a senior in HS
Hi Fitz,
I just want to say that I am happy that we live in a society which is somewhat more tolerant of long hair on men. It still could be more tolerant though.
Please keep growing your hair my friend!
Ted
I fully remember the show. It ran from 1960-1972.
It should also be mentioned that is when tv really had
a censorship department.
The show would have been cancelled before they let one of their
stars grow his hair.

I would mention the only time you really saw men with long hair
on TV was when you saw certain rock acts on TV or you saw news
reports of anti war demonstrations.
LHinA, I believe you are correct At least until 70 or 71, when the Partridge family debuted. David Cassidys hair was beyond shoulder length. In '66, You had the Monkees, but their hair was a contempoary "Beatle" length. All four of them had hair that was not quite shoulder length. Peter Torks hair came closest. The only time one might spot longer male hair (before the early 70s) was on a cop show, like Adam 12 or Dragnet. and the characterization of the longhair was not favorable.
But even with the Monkees and the Partridge family their hair was
was rather short compared to many rock stars who had much longer hair. David Casssidy still had rather short hair by then.
I beleive this was the longest his hair got.
Hey Fitzgarce,
Yes, I remember that episode of "My Three Sons". Chip went to the barbar shop and asked that the barbar simply comb out his hair. The barbar looked at his clippers and said that maybe he should bury themin a time capsule. One day, they'll dig them up and wonder what they were used for.
Your long-haired bro,
Raymond
