I tried dying my hair before going to a rock music festival. It warned on the hair dye that the product worked best on blond hair or if dark, you should bleach it. I balked at bleaching my hair so tried it without.
I tried electric blue - hardly any difference, just slight blue tones. So I tried it again really thoroughly - no better. So then my g/friend applied her purple dye - still no better, just a bit of purple in with the blue. Then we tried another electric blue dye - a spray-on one. Cool but it just brushed out as soon as I combed it.
My hair was still basically its usual dark brown but it felt kinda coarse and weird. I thought: OMG! I've ruined my hair!
Shampooed it on getting back home after the festival. The water turned blue/purple/black - but my hair survived perfectly. Silkier and nicer than ever! Hair is tough stuff!
Still glad I didn't give in to temptation and bleach it though. ;)

Hair can be resilient, and the products you used were likely a "celophane" type of hair wrap. Lucky you. Hair can be be stretched, and flattened and suffer all manner of abuse. but there are limits. Be very careful. Not only the shaft can be wrecked, but the follicles can be shocked as well.
Yeah, I think you're right. They were advertised as "semi-permanent" but the list of chemicals in them scared the s**t out of me. No way am I gonna use anything stronger, like hydrogen peroxide and stuff.
I was kinda sad that my hair has now gone back to its usual boring dark brown after only one shampoo but I'm also glad in a way. My friend often dyes his hair bright green but after a few weeks it becomes an ugly greenish-grey colour and he has to cut it all off and start growing it again from scratch to regain his natural dark blond colour. At least I don't have to go through that.

Hi Damon,
Wow, you certainly like playing with fire but thankfully nothing bad became of your experiment.I can see the excitement of the moment to add color because of the occasion but you have to be careful. At least you didn't do the recommended bleaching which likely would altered the makeup of your hair.I'm very cautious of what I put in my hair as it took me some time to eventually do my henna coloring.Hope you had a great time at the festival my friend.Cheers....

I'm still determined to dye my hair electric blue at some stage (mega-cool!) but I will be careful. The festival was amazing! Thanks! Do you go to any round you, Mark?

Hi Damon,
Please be very careful when you experiment with your hair! I want to see your hair grow extra long my friend! But I do appreciate your adventurous self! Rock on man!

Actually it's not. I found out the hard way that hair
can and does get damaged. Two years ago I had to chop off
about eight inches of hair to get rid of the damaged ends.
And then last year I had to chop off another six inches of damaged
ends. Now i'm being extra careful to not have to repeat that
again. I'm determined to get my hair back to waist length which
means I can't have any more damaged ends.
I much prefer having my hair down and loose, but sometimes I have
to bite the bullet and restrain it to prevent damage.
I also like all my grey hair, so I don't color it. In all the years it has been long it has remained it's true natural color.
And right now, at the ripe old age of 59, that true natural color is grey. And it will remain grey.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "damaged ends". Is that the same as "split ends"? I don't seem to get them but my hair is nowhere near as long as yours.

The ends were looking pretty sloppy. Even though I was ever so careful they still got damaged. i hated having to chop off
6-8 inces but I also hated how bad the ends looked.
Ultimately i'm now wondering if,
at the age of 59, if my terminal length is now around nipple/
mid back length. I hope not, I still want to return to waist length but i'm begining to wonder if that is even possible now
that i've had to chop off about 6-8 inches twice in the past
two years.
But if that is the case, one thing is for sure, I won't be cutting my hair short.
