For years my "long hair inspiration" has been Kurt Cobain. I loved his hair texture, length and color.
I already achieved his length (and actually passed it) .
My current long hair inspiration is Andrej Pejic. For those who dont know him, he is a very famous androgynous top model .
Yes, he is a man (although he looks like a girl).
His hair is amazing. My next goal in length is something like his hair:
What about you guys? Do you have anyone who inspires you?
Right now my current inspiration would be this guy:
Hi LHIA,
Scott is my ultimate inspiration. However, I don't think my hair genes will allow such awesome length! Scott, I'm very jealous of your hair:)
Ted
Hi Dave,
Those are all very nice inspirational pics! I can't wait to see your hair at that length!
Although I don't have exactly the same type hair as him I have always liked Anthony Kiedis' hair. I think he has it short now.
Ted
Great example there, Ted!
Anthony Kiedis had the perfect straight, dark hair back in the 90's, and I always looked up to him for that.. too bad he chopped it off in the last few years :)
Thanks Raul! But he still has the voice that I love from the RHCP! Rock on!
Ted
One of the best bands I've ever had the pleasure of listening to! the RHCP are in a way a part of my teens and growing up proccess, and to this day I feel a tear in my eye when I hear under the bridge. Rock on, brother :)
I love that guy's hair. I have been actually following him since I was like 12 and started to listen to RHCP.
I think he never had short hair, at least not a buzz cut.
For myself, The look I had in the 70s. Will soon have the hair again, in length , if not in color. But the rest ....I just ain't that young, anymore.
Now if I could just get a pair of those jeans ...
Right now the only place you could find them would be ebay..........
Back in the 70s I had a number of pairs, some of them
were "elephant bells." And the hair by then was waist length. .
Handsome lookin' dude I say!
Ted
Thats a good one! Isnt your hair at that stage already? On the profile pic it looks like it is. Correct me if Im wrong!
Bell bottoms, 20 inch waistline, great mustache, and some truly beautiful long hair. You were certainly emblematic of a what was so great about the fashions of the 70s, regardless of some of the negative comments people say about the styles of that time. You really had it all together.
Is that really you? Man, you were a hot looking guy back then - of course, I'd say you've still got it now, actually.
My hair inspiration role-models have changed throughout the time I've been growing my hair, and right now, there are the two I look most up to:
James Shaffer of KoRN. Not only is he one of my favorite guitarists, but he's also got this GORGEOUS dreads, ones that are a bit more on the "neglect" and natural side of things, and they're looking absolutely fantastic!
Jason Castro, the original dude that made me fall in love with dreadlocks... his are a tad more ruly and neat, but at the same time, there's still lots of loose hair in there as well, something that I really really adds to the look. Too neat and perfect dreads look artificial to me.
P.S- I know this is not a popular choice here, but just as Dave is following his dream by checmically straightening his hair, and Justin always advises me as well... I will be following my heart, and on Friday I am getting my dreadlocks :)
Hi Raul,
These two guys look very good with dreadlocks! And I am totally with you on getting dreadlocks! You will look badass with dreadlocks! But then again, you would look good with just about anything my friend! Grrr.
Ted
Hey Ted!
Again, you show your kind, warm and open heart in supporting others in their wishes, dreams and journeys... what more could one ask for a friend, even if "just" an online friend? :) Thank you!
I will make you all see how beautiful dreadlocks can be, I promise you that much!
And in a way, it's even more so of a patience and showing of strength game than "just" growing long hair, as the hair grows in knots, and thus shinkage of the locks make it seem as if it's growing even slower! I really do believe this will be a positive change for me, and a part of my growth as a man and a person :)
Hi Raul,
Oh yes, of course I will be kind and warm to my buddy from Norway! And you are most welcome my friend!
And I have no doubt whatsoever that you will show us how good dreadlocks can be! I believe you are correct about more patience being needed! You are going to have to deal with the shrinkage factor! And you thought your natural curly hair had shrinkage! Ha!
It will be a positive change for you and I know you will have fun just like I am growing mine! Heck I'm just now able to see my hair kind of fall over my shoulders a little! Life is good and as you know, it's up to us to keep it that way my friend! Go for it and have fun! Your hair, your style! A teacher with dreads...that's badass!
Ted
Hey Raul,
I saw your video announcing this. It wouldn't be my choice but I fully support your decision. I wish you the very best on your journey to dreads!
Jason
Hey Jason!
As always, you prove to be a wonderufl, open minded and accepting person and friend, and I appreciate that a lot, even if this is not something you find appealing :)
I will show you, buddy... my dreads at lower back length are going to be magnificent ;)
Heyyy !
I watched today the video where you announced you were getting dreadlocks!!
Can't wait to see that! I love dreadlocks !
There is also a YouTube guy who documented all his journey to dreadlocks from Day 1 (unfortunately now he cut his dreads off). You will probably be interested. I think he is the best youtubber on giving advise on how to get dreadlocks, maintenance, etc.
His nickname is: ryanOriley1 (here is his first video
And yes, I think everyone should follow the kind of hair they want, no matter what. Life is too short to worry about things such as "will this damage my hair?" . If anything goes wrong, you can always cut your hair and will grow back.
Hey Dave!
Thanks for the link! I've been watching plenty other dreadlock journey's, but haven't really followed this one, will definitely make sure to watch the entire thing!
I appreciate your support, and really want to make the same point as you- whether your dream is wavy, curly, straight, dark, light, pink, whatever hair... go for it. You've only got one life, and just as it's not cool getting negative comments from people who think long hair is "girly", "unkept" or "nasty", it's important to show eachother just as much understanding and solidarity in accepting each others' wishes...
I do realize most of the members on this wonderful board are more into the terminal length, natural type of hair, and that's perfectly fine. I would still rather write here and be a part of this community than have to start writing at a dreadlock only forum, so I hope I am still welcome here, as locked or not, it's still definitely going to be LONG HAIR! :)
Once again, I hope to see your dreadlocks journey documented on YouTube!
Dreadlocks is not the kind of thing that I am looking forward to me, but I definitely enjoy watching other people's journey to the type of hair they want and I am sure I will enjoy watching yours!
One more thing that I forgot to mention, I personally think that not everyone can pull off dreadlocks, but you have a lot of style to pull off that look and I think you will look amazing, so please keep up updated either via YouTube or this board :D
Greatly appreciated, Dave! Keep on following the journey, bro, as I will with yours :)
I think it's going to be pretty cool Raul! I'm excited to see what it looks like once you get it done. I myself have no idea what it takes to get dreadlocks so now you have me curious...
-Tommy
Thanks Tommy!
Well, there's plenty of ways to get the locs down, from backcombing, to neglect/natural locs, to crocheting and twist & ripping. Each of the methods but the neglect/natural one are simply artificial ways to make the locking and maturing progress go a bit faster than it would all by itself with no conditioning or brushing.
Personally, I will be going with the crocheting method, as it's a compromise between the backcoming's quick locking yet greatly reduced length, and the twist & rip almost no length loss and yet loose knots and longer maturing time.
Keep an eye out for my vlog, as well as updates here during the weekend :)
Hi Raul and I am so excitied for you. YES, always follow your heart and do what you like the best. Really, life is but a drop in the bucket of time, and if you "don't" do what YOU desire now, you may never have a chance. Sample a little of all. Best wishes on this brand new journey-adventure and of course, there will always be some that say they don't like. That is just people being people. "Just people." (The "Pontificators.") You see, they are no more important than you are, and if this is your choice for a different style of long hair, I say: GO FOR IT! :-) I happen to like Dreads a real lot and that is one style I never had. :-( I Did have a Mullet for a while once and really liked it. And how could I forget the several times when younger (not that I wouldn't do it again now cause I would) a Rat Tail. COOL! (Of course, we read on the Internet that this is so horrible and nobody likes.) Well, they are wrong because plenty of guys have had these and loved them. That's what counts. Mohawks are really neat too. The "Emo look" is so original and what of the Asian "Anime" fashions with the spiked up hair? Fun! On man, you wouldn't EVER believe the blast I have been having since I cut my long hair which ended up impossible to save after that hospital run-in. I have gone through so many hairstyles you wouldn't believe and still, there are still a bunch of them on the horizon.
Above is a photo of the Soccer player Neymar. Quite amusing how things like this work: Just as soon as an "idol" sports a certain hairstyle that if he hadn't would have been declared as "gross" before HE did it, suddenly it becomes a bit of a fad and with all kinds of variations and is loved! Tons of guys are doing this one now. That's "just people" for you.
Good luck Friday Raul and please post a video of how it all turns out. I am sure that you have done all of your homework in advance, so pay no attention to the others that will tell you "in advance" how sorry you will be. Interesting isn't it how people can be such experts about everything there is to know about everything, except their own business.
Take care-
Justin~
ps: Look at what I have now that I posted for my 65th Birthday, and I had so much fun doing it all by myself. Will I stay in this style forever? Heck No. But I tried it and am right now enjoying it. "So what" about my age. OMG, so many men my age go for a haircut, and when asked what they would like, the answer is (in a quiet lifeless-like tone) "Same old thing." Well, of course, each to their own and this is their choice. Me, I am still too wild and crazy to want the "same OLD thing." LOL :-)
Jason - I so loved your 'birthday-bash' video - I was riveted & chucklin' away ... so thx. for that + I do agree 'bout following our heart & spirit - so I will support Rauls decision fully - I was just making sure his resolve was true, so he did not have any regrets - diversity & difference make life interesting & zesty - cheers to you buddy CEM ~:-)~
Jason = Justin: ( of course ) - what can I say = I'm DIZZY !!!
Hey Raul!
Go for it, bro!
I choose to let my hair grow out naturally to terminal length. I do not care to put my hair in dreadlocks. I think that you should follow your heart and what you know looks good for you. I am always interested to experience a bro's journey to long hair with him and to watch as his hair grows into the style he chooses. So I am looking forward to seeing your updates as your hair grows. I also think that long dreadlocks on you will look gorgeous! Absolutely beautiful! I hope that when your dreadlock hair reaches mid-back length that you would seriously consider letting it continue to grow to terminal length.
I'm behind you 100%, dude!
Go fo it!
Your long haired bro,
Raymond
Appreciate the support, Raymond!
Will definitely be fun to watch them locs grown, and we shall see about the length! right now first goal after dreading them will be shoulder length, then mid back... I still think hair longer than that is just hard to deal with, but never say never! ;)
Never liked Dreadlocks, but I sure as phuck support you on that choice (Not that you need my support or that it is important in the slightest).
On the other hand, shouldn't your hair be somewhat longer to get dreadlocks?
Thanks Michail :)
It's perhpas more eppealing to the eye to dreadlock hair that is at least at shoulder length, but there's tons of people who have dreaded hair as short as 3" (mine is at around the 5" mark) and it locks even better when allowed to grow into the dreadlocks from a shorter length.
It just might look a bit funny in the beginning, but that's what the headbands are for ;)
No problem. It's the least we can do for each other.
Interesting. Thanks for the information.
I would say the most awesome dreadlocks are those that are waist length or longer (like butt length.)
I've seen a number of individuals with butt length dreads and it
looks awesome.
Definitely agree with you there, LHIA, and oddly enough, I do neot feel the same about regular long hair... :D I do, however, feel that dreadlocks looks better and better with length, so lower back would ineed be ideal in my eyes :)
... this GORGEOUS dreads, ones that are a bit more on the "neglect" and natural side of things, and they're looking absolutely fantastic ...
Dear Raul - plz. think long & hard re: your decision to 'dread-lock' - it will 'lock-in' FOREVER your decision ... your hair will be stunning LONG - remember PATIENCE = we all must MASTER this BEAST ... I say this with love ... I'm opinionated: ( have you not noticed ) - I will support your decision NO MATTER ! ... very kind regards CEM.
(◡‿◡✿) PS: = you must know & feel the state of long flowing hair = then IF NOT SATISFIED = THEN dreadlock !!!
Definitely appreciate the concern and I know you're saying this only because you care and want to see me succeed in my long hair journey, buddy :)
Remember I DID use to have long hair, at least long in most standards for men (a bit under shoulder length) for quite some years, and I know exactly how it feels and look on me. I was never really 100% satisfied with my hair texture or type.
Now, I do realize locks are almost always a one way ticket, and a huge dedication is required (much more so than "simply" growing out long hair, from what I see), and I really want to embrak on this joureny.
Most peopel lock their hair at around the 7"-10" mark, since locking up at REALLY long lengths make for a really tough transition, as one needs to baby them dreadlocks a lot in the beginning. I do hope you and the rest of the guys here will remember that when I post my pictures next weekend, as they really aren't TRUE dreadlocks before it's been a year or so.. it's a jounrey, it takes time, and I am on board! :)
Thanks for your concerns, but I will prove you wrong ;)
You guys are gonna think I am wierd, but here goes...
last year I was watching a cable reality show (oh, brother) with my wife - it is called Sister Wives and it is about this guy, Cody Brown of Utah, who has 4 wives - they aren't sisters, they just call themselves that... Anyway, when I saw his hair, I loved it - and I realized that my hair is very similar to his. Already, my hair is starting to come in like this... My other inspiration is Brad Pitt - although, I do not claim to have hair anything like his - nor do I look anything like him. and I, honestly could not handle more than one woman - Angelina or any other...
I would add to this that when it comes to Sister Wives
that Polygamy is very much illegal in the US of A and the
authorities are very much aware of the show and are poised to
take action at some point.
You have to wonder why they do the show knowing that an arrest will inevitable.
I don't wonder - I imagine it is very expensive to be responsible for four wives and 18 children - It would have to come down to the money ($$$) as it usually does come down to the money
Brad Pitt's hair's amazing!!
It sure is - the longer it grows, the better it gets... I think it's cool how his movie rolls have been taylored around his long hair -
thanks, Dave_Argentina
Except I believe it is a weave. Last I saw his hair was long but not that long.
Too bad, he'd look much better with longer hair.
That picture seems to be rather old.
I'm a big fan of Brad Pitt's long hair as well. One of the first things I did when I started growing my hair out was just google long hair pictures and one of his was one of the ones I saved. I'll dig them up and post them :)
-Tommy
I agree - I think this is not how his real hair is - just saw a recent picture of him and it was not this blond or this look to it - he seems to have a fairly straight texture with some body to it - nice length now - past his shoulders...
I will never have hair like Brad Pitt, nor will I look like him when my hair grows out - but he has definitely been my first inspiration in growing my hair out... Unfortunately, due to my thin top and receeding hair line, and the texture of my hair - my current hair looks more like Kody Brown - and that's OK with me.
thanks for the comments, guys!
My first has always been Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad.
Second was David Cassidy
Third was David Lee Roth(early days of Van Halen
Warrel Dane
Well, I know his hair is just opposite to the one I have, but anyway, I love this man with beautiful golden curls. Yeah, it's Robert Plant.
Serge.
As much as I envy Kurt's hairtype, he is not a good role model. He wasn't known for taking good care of his hair, which resulted in him keeping it in a rather short style, as Hair Religion stated it on his site. Not that anyone gives a phuck about my opinion, anyway.
You have to be the first person I know of, whose hair idol is Andrej. While I've seen him being mentioned by a lot of long haired guys, he was never their inspiration.
My current one has to be War from Darksiders. Of course, I'm not talking about the hair type (although I love it, but since I can't have it naturally, I don't want it at all) or color (I feel the same about this). I'm talking about the way it lays on his chest. Also, when my hair is at that point, I will probably always wear a Zip hoodie when out, because it just looks that awesome.
-
Do you mean like this?
Do you mean like this?
Yes.
While the look is awesome i'd mention the huge drawback is that
banks and stores tend to frown on folks coming in wearing hoodies.
Some of them even post signs asking that hoodies be removed.
With all the bank robberies you can understand why.
Also hoodies are great in winter but not so much in summer.
The other problem with hoodies is it's all too easy to get the
hair caught in the zipper. I've learned that lesson the hard way which is one of the ways I damaged the ends.
Well, maybe it has something to do with where you live, because here in germany, it is generally accepted to go just about anywhere with hoodies, but you would have to take the hood off when you enter certain buildings.
And this is one of the reasons why I dislike summer. I would wear hoodies from early autumn until late spring.
So far it never happened to me (which is becasue my hair is not long enough), but thanks for reminding me of that, as I have to be careful from now on.
Here in the big city we have lots of bank robberies, store robberies hence the no hoodies rule. The hoodies make it more
difficult to identify the perp..
I wear hoodies alot once the weather gets cold but I only wear the hood over the head when it stormy and very windy (to prevent damage to the hair.)
So when it is not storming/very windy i'm wearing my hair down
and loose not hiding it under a hat or hoodie. Also when
it is stormy or windy i'll tie the hair in a pony tail/braid it/
bun it/or pig tail it.
Sucks when people spoil something for other's, doesn't it?
It doesn't bother me that much when it's windy, but I do wear the hood when it rains.
Probably a good idea to protect your hair, but....I personally don't like doing any of the above mentioned, so I will just put it in my hood and hope it doesn't take any damage.
Kurt Cobain wasnt famous for taking care of his hair? That makes him even better hahah
If he never took care of his hair and he had such a great hair, then he really should've had amazing hair genes hahah (thats my personal point of view).
I think Andrej is never mentioned because although he is famous worldwide, he is not THAT famous to be considered (I guess). His hair is amazing, really. I love its texture.
Yes, hoodies in general look AWESOME with long hair at chest length .I think I will be able to do that next year (right now is winter in my country and its getting to its end. My hair is past my shoulders so for next year's winter I think it will be chest length or even past that).
While that might be true, some guys out there may think that they can achieve the same by.....doing the same, which will lead to disappointment when they discover that it just doesn't work for them and they will most likely end up shaving their hair off.
I'm sure you will be able to do that, seeing as how your hair progresses.
Thanks for the kind comments!
I agree with that. But is also true that people has to be conscious and be realistic about their hair type, etc and know that some people can grow their hair without taking care of it, and others just can't haha.
I would also agree that hoodies do look awesome with long hair.
They look at awesome at any length, the longer the better.
Even though my jackets have hoodies on them I usually only use the hoodies on stormy and windy days to protect my hair.
The thing you have to watch out for though is it's very
easy to get long hair caught in the zipper.
I much prefer having my hair down and loose, i'll restrain it
or wear it under a hoodie when it stormy or windy to keep it from
getting damaged. Also when i'm wearing it under a hoodie
it's in a pony tail/pig tail/braid or bun. I prefer the hair down and loose but when you've got a strong northwest wind blowing in excess of 60 mph it can get your hair all tangled and
damage it. I've found that out the hard way.
Long hair and hoodies look awesome, no matter how long the hair is. (But the longer the hair the more awesome it looks.)
Hi(gh)!
The initial inspiration which made me wanting to have long hair (not yet actually grow long hair, as I was only 12 years old back then) was Leslie Mandoki, a Hungarian jazz/rock musician who around 1980 was quite successful across Europe with a (rather showy) pop group named "Dschinghis Khan" (Genghis Khan).
On http://www.steppenwind.com/leslie_story.htm you'll find several pictures of him, note especially the third one from his Dschinghis Khan days!
Yes, Mandoki was (and still is!) an almost archetypical "swamp gypsy"... but when I felt encouraged enough to finally grow out my hair in my 20s, I turned out to be not a swamp gypsy at all, rather I went for the classical "hippie look" (i. e. full beard and long hair).
See you in Khyberspace!
