Hey guys, my hair has never been more than 2" long, I got sick of trying to find a haircut that I like. I have done a fair bit of reasearch and ready to charge ahead for long hair, Only problem is I just got a haircut 5 days ago and decided on getting long hair tonight, I'm so bummed >.<
Now this is my hair at the moment, a faux hawk:

2) http://puu.sh/4wcIP
I want to roughly go for this kind of look:
1) http://puu.sh/4AMLh.jpeg
2) http://puu.sh/4AMWl.jpg
note: this is not the look where it is cut in a line while hanging so that it all hangs at the same level, I personally dislike that.
my question is, from my haircut is it best to get a buzzcut and start there or can I just leave it and grow it out as it is? will my choice affect the outcome at all?
Let's see, you don't want your hair to be all at one length. Best way to achieve this is to.....just not cut it.
I have never seen anyone start their hair journey with a faux hawk such as yours, so I can't tell you for sure, but if you started from a buzzcut you hair would eventually develop the natural V-shape, if that's what you want.
Thanks, Michail, say I grow it out as is and I don't like how it appears once its long, can I get the hairdresser to cut my hair to resemble the natural V shape?
I'm also assuming you'll need to get it trimmed at some point along the way to remove split ends and keep it tidy... or not? even with terminal length hair is occasional trimming needed to keep it neat or it is just simply not cut ever?
Most likely. It's like cutting layers into your hair (I think).
Only if the ends are in a bad condition and in need of a trim. Getting a trim, in my opinion, is like one step forward and two steps backwards (As Hairball told me once), if you do it regularly I would suggest you try the Search & Destroy method, which a lot of longhairs swear by.
The most important thing is to not cut it during the awkward stage, as it only prolongs the process and even if you sometimes feel the need to trim the back, due to the mulletish look, don't do it. Keep the scissors and clippers far away from your head and in approximately 15 months your hair will looks fantastic. From the on it will only get better with time.
I did some research, hairdressers can cut that look apparently
Bottom right in this following picture
http://www.hairfinder.com/techniques/elevations-angles.gif
I'll try growing it out from how it is at the moment and not touch it until the top strands are touching my shoulder then I'll have a look at seeing if I can get something done to it.
also what is the best way to take care of it? there are a million different views on this and many different productsa to, and no one agrees!
When I started to grow my hair long my haircut was similar to yours (longer at the top, shorter at the bottom).
I grew it up from a cut like that and it looks cool now. I had no problems actually.
I also have the kind of growth you're looking for (layered or not all-one-length). My hair naturally grows like that. This will depend on your genes. Some people grow their hair all the same length (hanging all at the same level) and others like me naturally grow their hair hanging in different levels or layers.
Wait and see how yours grows!
The key to having long hair is the obvious - don't cut it until you have reached your goal length when you may want to trim odd hairs.
Your current cut will make no difference whatever and the slightly longer hair on top may be a minor help as they have further to grow.
Just stick in come back here for encouragement and you will make your goal in 18 months. The awkward stage will be a possible challenge but it is quite manageable. Ignore your friends and family who will protest and ignore anyone who says a trim will help the awkward stage It won't it will merely prolong it.
Good luck
Im with these guys. The way to grow your hair. Is to stop cutting it. The first few times I tried in college I tried to get the right cut to start. This time I just didn't get a haircut. I started from a longer version of what you now have.
Best of luck
The best way to attain long hair is to cease getting your hair cut.
The beter way is to just leave your hair and let it grow out as it is. More than likely some of your hairs on your head will grow faster than other hairs on your head. I would not suggest getting a buzz cut.
So do you mean you want the hair to be all different lengths
rather than one uniform length straight across?
yes correct, it was a little hard to explain, I do not want the ends of the hair strands all to sit at the same height together. I essentially want it to look like this: http://puu.sh/4Be2K.jpg
NOT this: http://www.enchantress.com/Images/Gallery/ServicesPhoto.jpg
thank you
Ok thanks heap guys, I think I'll go from the cut I already have, hopefully save a month or so that way. If it doesn;t turn out the way you want there must be ways to trim it for that effect right? You can always ask a hair dresser to give you a layered look like yours Dave_Argentina, correct?
I'll echo everyone else and say don't cut it. That's probably 3-5 months worth of growth you've got there. You'll want that extra 2-3 inches at the front especially when your getting close to ponytail length!
Good luck, it's a long road from here on out, but all the info and encouragement you need is here at MLHH!

Hi Stickeelion,
You don't have to get a buzzcut. Just remember that haircuts will not be a part of your life for about 4 years or so. Your hair will grow in and do its thing naturally. You will notice that it will take time to fill in the bottom where it is shorter. But it will and it's fun to watch the changes the hair goes through. If my hair still looks like it did tonight, I will put a pic here. My hair is growing in a V in the back. The sides are still trying to catch up because of the layering. But I am going for all one length, which you say you don't like.
Don't be bummed. Just let your hair grow out and be patient. Just think of the money you will save by not going to the barber! Your patience will be rewarded my friend! Please keep us updated and welcome to the board! You will find a lot of inspiration and help here!

Thanks Ted, If it doesn't turn out the way I want there must be ways to trim it for that effect or whatever other style I wish, correct? even if I want to obtain the natural v can that be done after, once I've grown it out?
I'll definitly be back with some progress pics later on

Hi Stickeelion,
I should have taken a pic last night. It seemed like my hair looked more like it had a V shape in the back. Guess I was wrong! My crazy hair has a mind of its own! This is my hair after 3 days without washing. I guess it's finally becoming all one length. Not sure if this helps, but oh well.

>.<
That looks so good I want to buzzcut mine now.... sigh the decision is so hard.
Also what's your routine to take care of it?
Hi Stickeelion,
Oh you are much too kind my friend! I am happy you like it! Believe it or not, this pic is my hair 4 days after washing with shampoo. I only used conditioner to wash for the last 3 days. It looks kind of flat because of the conditioner weighing it down. It really feels greasy when I don't use shampoo all the time.
As far as my routine, I try to keep it as simple as I can. I just use V05 shampoo and conditioner. I use the non-moisturizing kind because my hair seems to like that. I never use brushes of any kind. I always rinse my hair under cold water before I get out of the shower. I never rub my hair dry with towels. This causes frizz sometimes. I comb my hair only, no brushing.
Please don't buzzcut your hair! It can't grow if you cut it! I do believe your hair will look so good when long! you will be very happy with your hair falling down your back! Go for it my friend! Thanks again for the compliments! I am trying to grow to at least waist length. Probably going to take another 3 or 4 years and a lot of patience!
Here is a pic of the front.

that mane looks quite majestic, I really want to take the best care of mine from the get go, should you go for organic stuff? stuff with keratin? what for shampoo and what for conditioner and oils etc etc etc, it's so confusing would you recommend any products or is there a way to find out what your hair likes best?
Hi Stickeelion,
My apologies for the delayed reply! The only way to find out what works is to experiment. I just use cheap shampoo and conditioner that works well with my hair type. But if I were you, I would try to keep your routine as simple as possible. Sometimes hair does fine when you don't pay so much attention to it. When your hair gets past your shoulders, your routine might get different. The longer your hair gets, sometimes you have to oil the ends. Of course, you can always ask here if you have questions along the way.
Here is another pic of my hair after washing. The waves look a little different.
Ted
no worries, I only just checked the boards again today. Thanks for the tips Ted :)
