Hi guys and gals,
Here is a shot of me holding my face vase. A piece of pottery I made 40 years ago. It was a difficult process but resulted in my best piece of work. I let plaster of paris set on my vaselined face while I breathed through straws for about 40 minutes. Had my hair tied back so didn't have much difficulty there but had to completely shave my beard and mustache to clean up pieces of residue from the plaster. As you can see it has grown back nicely in the past few decades. Have been letting the beard grow out without trims for about 2 years now. The hair has been growing out for 20 years now and without trims for 10.

Great looking vase - almost as awesome looking as its creator :) Definitely an ordeal making a casting of a bearded face. I'll concur that you have recovered nicely.
- Oren
Thanks Oren,
Was a bit of an ordeal to go through so when I knew that the plaster cast would not last long I opted to make two faces for the same pot. Perhaps in homage of Janus, the god of portals and time passage. In the present looking to the future as well as the past! One side of the face depicts the eyes x-ed out or stitched up to denote the passage to other realms beyond life on this earth.
Thanks for the compliments.

Hi jonalbear,
What a lovely creation! But consider the source! I surely don't envy what you went through to make it though! And yes, your beard has recovered well I must say! But when you combine that beard with your wonderful smile, what a combo! Please keep up the great work growing my friend! Perfection!

Hi JB,
Wow that is an amazing piece of art and to think how you made it is quite impressive! To think you sacrificed your beard and withstood 40 minutes of making the casting is quite interesting.Well be careful with that as I imagine its one of a kind and I'm sure you don't want to repeat the process now.LOL. Well done my friend.Cheers
Mârk
Thanks Mark. It was quite an ordeal. I don't think I would want to go through that again although it would be interesting to see the comparison over a 40+ year timespan!

Jonalbear,
I'm not sure what's cooler the vase or the fact that it still looks so good after 20 years (or that you even still have it). Thanks for sharing.
Tony
Thanks Tony,
Have always liked whay I achieved with this piece of work and have kept it save and in use as a planter since I made it.

That is a beautiful piece of art. It appears to have your face on both ends. You went through a lot of difficulty to make that. With 3D computer imaging, it would be much easier today.
Scott
Scott,
Thanks and I'm sure it would be much easier today but think the difficulty of the original process is part of what makes it special to me now!

Hi jonalbear! :-)
That HAS to be one of the most amazing vases I have ever known of and what a great idea you had back then to even think of doing such a vase. What an artist for sure. I never did work with Pottery and always wished I had given it a shot. Thank you so much for posting this jonalbear. All the best to you and John as well. Take care-
Justin~

You are a pretty cool dude, jonalbear...
That piece of pottery was created in a very unique way and I am sure it is a prized possession... creating something with your own hands is something not many of us can do. I admire that.
Your hair and beard are fantastic.
Fitzgarce,
Thank you for your most gracious compliments!
