I hate to do this, but I want to get a major trim for my hair and no I don't mean short hair, but like semi long back to my shoulders. Only reason why I want to cut it is because I want to get rid of old damage from mistreating it the first two years of growing it out. This way I can grow it healthy to my waist in the future. This has been on my mind for months, but at least it will still be to my shoulders so don't have to start way over.
I can sympathize with you on this. Two years ago i had to rim off about eight inches of length the get rid of damaged ends.
Last year i had to cut off another 7 inches of damaged hair.
Since them i've been extremely careful to not damage the hair.
I never want to cut off damaged hair again so i've been
extremely careful and so far it seems to be successful.
The bad news is that my hair seems to have reached terminal length at the nipples. It's now been about six months since
my last trim and the hair seem to have stopped growing any longer. I wanted to get back to waist length (or knee length like it was in the 80s but now at the age of 59 that doesn't seem possible any longer. Oh well, the hair will remain as
long as posssible and will remain it's natural color be that
grey, white, or something in between.
I've had to do that twice now. I am not the most careful person when it comes to my hair. I love having long hair, but I usually just keep it tied back where it's out of sight and out of mind. Unfortunately, that also means I don't notice damage or problems until it's too late. It's my own fault, so I can't complain, but it makes a trim necessary for me every few years.
That's good news in my book, brother! You have had really long hair for a good while now, and cutting off a substantial part of it with the goal in mind of re-growing it all healthy again, is a really great sacrifice to make!
The really funny thing, which really puts things into perspective, is that you are going to cut off more than the entire 5" I lost on the dreadlocks experiment, so it really makes one appreciate even more just how long it takes to grow out a lovely long mane :)
I can't see the negative side on this news really.
It's not that you are going to shave your head completly and starting all over again.
You are just going to trim a good part of it but even after that trim, it'll still be considered long hair. So, go for it :)
Many of us have had to do a "restart" for various reasons. You will enjoy the journey back towards your goal....and you will appreciate your hair more as you now a the education on haircare.

Mark, it's totally understandable. It's better to have a well cared for and nice-looking mane than just a pile of split ends that might be a few inches longer. I use the "Search & Destroy" method of chasing after split ends myself; but of course, like anything else, I have to be willing to keep up with that chore.
My best to you!!

If you leave your hair alone, then after several years you'll find out that the old hair will be replaced by new hair. So don't warry. Cutting your hair isn't necessary.
