Of course this image is not the best of examples, but I'm wondering if layering my hair would make it "lay" better. My ends curl up a lot, especially the left side... Would layering be a good idea to help give my hair some life again. The back is really dead looking and borderline unhealthy looking.
Hi Zach
From the photo, all sure looks great to my eyes. Not quite sure what you mean about giving "life" to your hair as it is looking well. Layering is normally not the solution, but then again this can depend on the goal you are after length-wise. Is the back in anyway damaged from not getting a good head start? Perhaps a close-up photo of the back so that we can all see before giving our best shot at advice. I am kinda thinking at the moment that most likely you are nearing the end of the Awkward Stage. To help tame these "flips," you might want to try this trick that can work real well:
1. Get both hands wet.
2. Apply a bead or two of gel to the palm of one hand.
3. Rub together and quickly......
4. Smooth over the hair.
All the best-
Justin~
Even when I brush my hair it does this. And when I don't it does the same thing. It's the oddest thing. Another guy at my school who has long (layered) hair doesn't have this problem whatsoever and we have similar hair.
Hi Zach,
Are you absolutely sure you have the same hair? My apologies Justin for jumping in here.
Ted
Hey Ted! :-)
No problem at all and nothing to apologize about in the slightest. Zachs hair will be killer gorgeous when long and it already is right now. I wish I had his hair type myself. Hope you have been doing well Ted and are having a really nice day today. Take care and all the best-
Justin~
Hi Justin,
Well, I am sorry for the late reply! You are correct! I love Zach's hair myself! Thanks for the well wishes Justin! And back at ya buddy!
Ted
We have similar hairstyles as in he splits it to the right as well. Only mine is "wild" and his is layered and managed.
Thanks for the help everyone! :)
Hi Zach
Thank you for posting the photo. Now I can really see what you are talking about.
Your hair looks and IS very well! :-) Your friend and you have completely different hair types. Yours is on the wavy side and there is nothing in the world wrong with that. This is simply the way your own hair is going to be. Being in the Awkward stage seems to be a hard thing for many guys, but I can assure you to just hang in there and go with the flow so to speak. When long, all will fall into place beautifully. It never fails. When longer, much of what you are seeing in the back now won't be seen as gravity and weight will have done its job. Your hair will have the most awesome life and vitality to it.
"If" you were to have a hair type such as yours layered, in my opinion it would be a total disastor and in your case wouldn't work well at all.
Take care Zach and best wishes to you growing out that mane.
Justin~
No, this is the awkward stage. You need to be patient and let your hair grow for 3/4 moths: the extra weight will prevent this. Cutting or layering will merely see the period extended and somehow you have to get through it, we all have.
Try a hat or bandana or even spray to help control it.
Hey Zach!
It would seem to me that your hair is very much like my hair in texture (at least back when I had any hair on my head :P), and I would strongly advise you to simply bite your teeth together and wait another 4-6 months or so!
I know all about the puffy, curly sides going all crazy on you, and I also know that the closer I got to the 1 year mark, the more neatly they begun settling, actually!
By layering your hair you will *perhaps* get a neater look now, but might regret it later when you will wnat an all one length beautiful long hair, and will have to wait and trim it out again simply to even it out.
At the stage you're at, that bandana you're using, a beanie hat, a ballcap or just some plain ol' gel are your best bets!
Keep on the good work, man! You're almost there! :)
As others have already said in their replies, if you can hang in there and NOT trim your hair for now, you will achieve longer hair quicker. But this all depends upon your hair goals -- if you want "medium-length" hair, rather than looooong, then by all means go ahead and layer it.
If you do decide to go in for a trim, please go to the very best salon in town -- it's worth the extra price to go to a highly reputable stylist, especially if you can find one who specializes in long hair. Cheap salons (or worse, barber shops), are only good at cutting off volume, which will bring you back to having to start your growth journey all over again.
My best to you!!

Hi Zach,
As a guy who is still in the awkward stage somewhat, I understand. But your hair looks okay in the photo. I also have wavy hair and have noticed the flippiness get less over time. What I would suggest is to just let it keep growing until you get a little past shoulder. I would bet you will be happy you didn't cut layers in.
But, if you are looking for the look with different lengths in your hair, then layer it. Just keep in mind that layers take a lot of time to grow out to one length. Also, layers need to be maintained-which costs money and salon trips.
Mother Nature has a wonderful way of making our hair look good if we just let it grow. I think you are just excited to get it long and overthinking everything. I can assure you when your hair gets 6 inches past your shoulders without layers you will be happy. But, of course, the decision is yours my friend! Hope this helps!
Ted
Layering will only give your hair less weight and in my opinion, make it less likely to lie as you want it. Just let it all grow!
Considering how bad hair dresses are, I would not suggest to cut not even 1 inch of hair. They will end up cutting what you dont want them to cut.
Just leave it grow and eventually it will "lay" down better. All of us have gone through that so keep up the good work.
Hi Zach,
Judging by the picture you posted I think your hair looks great and wouldn't do anything crazy.Possibly your bandanna is covering up what you are concerned about and if so just wear that to tame it until it get longer ;) Cheers

Hi Zach,
You have wonderful thickness now, and good luck with your future growth. Personally, I have never been a huge fan of layering, since I prefer the "one length look", and also, as your hair lengthens, you will appreciate every bit of thickness you can get.
Keep it growing,
David
