I am modelling cut off jeans again (not skinny jeans). I need to keep my hair length similar to last year. I work with a state agency in contact with the public very often.
IT is different. They can grow their hair as long as they want. They are not in contact with the public. Any people involvement has limitations to how I can present myself representing a public agency. The ponytail is upfront center. But I do not prefer this. I like to wear my hair down at all times. But the retirement benefits are what makes this worthe while.
Two other long hairs recently retired from the office leaving me to fend for myself. They wore hair down to mid back. One of these retired early.
So here I am modelling my hair in from of my fruit trees. I waited to post until the fruit trees turned golden in the fall. Makes a nice show of hair. I work out with the weights in addition to maintaining my hair. I do not feel confident to grow my hair longer until another long hair works in the office.
I use moisturizing shampoos followed by leave in conditioner oils, Chi Silk Serum and Orofluido. I apply these oils every day. Shampoo about once a week.
Don
Your hair is looking good.
I have hair that is about 2/3 of he way down the back,
I also wear cut off shorts all year 'round.
I mostly wear my hair down, I'll pony tail it/braid it/bun it/
pig tail it when it is stormy or windy to keep the hair from
getting damaged. I prefer to wear it down and loose though.
Don
Your hair looks GREAT, and the fall colors only add to this nice photo!!
I'm also jealous of your excellent physique! You obviously take good care of both your long hair and your body -- so keep up the good work!
No worries about how you feel about growing your hair any longer (for now). We all have to survive in this world financially; so whatever jobs we have as individuals can vary greatly from longhair to longhair, so to judge another for making the best decision they can under their particular set of circumstances is not really for somebody else to comment on. You sound happy -- so that is the main point! And from my point of view, I think your hair looks just terrific, both in length and in excellent condition!
Anyway, thanks for sharing your pics and comments with us!

Ken,
Hi Ken,
Thank you for the wonderful constructive hair review. The work environment can be unreasonably competitive. Here is a positive group effort to wear long hair as a preference.
I need to post with longer hair with my roses in full bloom next spring. Such a beautiful show of color. The apple trees are very beautiful in the fall. So is S.F. around Union Square, which I visit often.
Don
Hi Don,
Kudos on both your hair and physique. It's nice too that you took the photos outdoors. As we discussed previously, it really adds to the look of long hair.
Has anyone commented about your hair? It may be that they really wouldn't care if you grew it longer. You could always go for it and then cut back if you felt too uncomfortable.
Jason
Hi Jason,
I agree that I would look so much better if my hair is at least half way down on the back. Immersed in oils, this would be a surreal experience to enjoy. This would be much better proportioned to my shoulders and back. This was the standard look during the Itallian Renaissance, which I can see in the paintings in my wife's hometown of Verona, Italy.
For work, I will attempt to tuck the pony tail under, then up banding both together. I need to figure out how to adapt confidently after two long hairs left the office. Thank you for the positive advise.
Don
Hi Don,
Cheers to you for having such a great head of curly hair, and for keeping yourself in such excellent shape. I agree with Jason, that if you are not actually receiving any negative comments right now, then perhaps you could try for more length.
Keep it growing,
David
Hi David,
I agree too that I would look so much better with longer hair spread out over my back. The conditioners and then oil application create such a surreal look with repeated brushing. The hair salon in S.F. near Union Square can really help me put together a well proportioned style. With broad shoulders, there is no question as to what this is intended for. Retirement does provide the ultimate release to conform to something else. I would like to work longer for the social contacts. But there is negligble retirement in private, just death.
Thanks so much David,
Don
Ha, you are correct about private retirement. Being self employed
I don't have a retirement plan, just an expirement plan.
Hey Don,
Awesome Hair, Dude!
Great length for one (1) year. I like to work out, also.
I like to let my hair fly freely. I realize that I can not do that all the time because I need to look neat and professional. This is what I do. I put my hair in a tail to keep it looking kempt and professional. I spray the ends which are not quite long enough to get caught in the tie forming the pony. I bind my ponytail as close to the bottom of the pony tail with a second tie. Then I put the tail under the back of my collar. In that way people might see the pony going into the back of my shirt but they do not know how much hair is there under the back of my shirt.
Thanks for the update, bro.
Your long haired bro,
Raymond
Now at the age of 59 I refuse to do that. I've got long hair
and by golly i'm going to continue to flaunt it. I want the world to know at the ripe old age of 59 that I have long hair
and won't be hiding it, retraining it, or cutting it. So my long hair is there for all the world to see. If someone doesn't like it then tough potatoes. .
Even when I go to work my hair is down and loose. I'm also lucky enough that I can wear what I want to work. Most days
my hair is hair is down and loose (not restrained), and i'm wearing cut off shorts all year 'round. I've been working for
the same company now for 27 years.
I am not currently working because of my health issues. But you can bet when I do (hopefully) go back to work, I will do everything in my power to wear my hair loose at work. We don't grow our hair to keep it hidden. At least not in my world. Of course, there are exceptions. Such as if you have extremely long hair which would get caught in things etc.
On a side note, I think it's funny when someone says "to look professional..." Who said long hair doesn't look "professional". Not conservative maybe, but whatever.
Ted
Hi Ted,
Job interviews and long hair have been such a challenge to me over the years. Has been a very frustrating experience for me. How to manage this in a work environment needs a careful approach from my dealing with this. Just live in the northern coast of California.
Don
Hi Don,
I am dismayed to hear of your situation. We definitely don't need any more stress than we already might have. I can only imagine what you go through on a daily basis. Very unfortunate to have to deal with people who are intolerant or not open minded. I was raised to be very tolerant and also open minded. I don't take too kindly too people like that. I am glad that you are able to work with it though.
I haven't worked a regular job in about three years due to a disability. So, needless to say. I am just letting my hair grow as long as I can. I do hope to get a transplant soon and return to work one day. At that time I will most likely find work which allows long hair. Right now I am just enjoying it since I have to go to dialysis 3 times per week. Growing my hair is just one of my joys in life. It's kind of a trade-off, I guess.
I do, however, wish you good fortune in dealing with your work situation and growing your hair. You do have lovely hair which looks to be in great condition. Please keep growing it if you can! Long locks forever!
Ted
Just curious what area of northern coastal California you are
located in since I am also in what could I guess be considered
northern coastal California (Mendocino County).
I live in Sebastopol in the winter, and then Arcata, Humboldt Co. in the summber. Both of these are islands for long hair with a more open life style. Mendocino is very good for this too. The pictures above are from Sebastopol.
Thanks much.
Don
Hi Don,
I must say I am very jealous of you guys. I would love to live in Northern California. My Dad used to order plants from Miniature Plant Kingdom in Sebastopol for our Bonsai nursery. Those were some of the finest plants I have ever worked with. The weather is lovely out there. My Mom lives in Suisun City now. My Step Dad had a sister who had a house right on Clear Lake. We stayed a few days there and it was wonderful. I spent part of my childhood in Redwood City.
Please stay well and enjoy!
Ted
Thank you. I do consider myself to be blessed or lucky to be
living here. And I plan on staying here until I die.
Where are you living now?
I am living in South Texas now. I have been living here since about 1978. I lived in other places when I was in the Air Force, but came back to Texas. Most likely I will remain here until I die. Yes, I consider you lucky to live in California. Most of my relatives still live in Northern California. We love out barbeque and Mexican food here in Texas though! Also, we have a good share of longhairs here, which is good.
Ted
I get a kick out of the look professional thing. They'll say long hair is not "professional" but the guy with a huge baldspot
and a very long "comb over" is professional.
Or you've got the guy who shaves his head and has lots of areas
where he cut himself with the razor.
How are those professional while long is not?
Wonderful accomplishment to wear your hair so freely at work. I'm jealous. But one of the geologists that just retired at my office wore his hair half way down freely at the office. I lost such a valuable example. Hats off to retirement benefits. With long hair underneath.
Don
Well Mr. Albany, count yourself as lucky then, you have a lot to be grateful for; but not every longhair is in such an ideal employment situation as you. Everybody is different, and not everybody might be able to keep their current job if they all allow their hair to be worn loose.
I, for one, am not allowed to wear my hair loose -- I work in a kitchen in a small nursing home, where there are health code rules as well as safety rules; so I tie my hair back in a bun during the day.... and even if i WANTED to wear my hair loose, I risk catching it on fire, being as I cook in front of a 6-burner stove and hot oven all day long!
I draw the line here: I will not cut my hair for a job -- but I am totally OK with my boss telling me HOW to wear it, whether it be under a hat, in a bun, in a braid, or even in pig tails with pink bows (YUK -- I would hope to never have a boss tell me to do that, but you get the idea...)!!
Again, everybody is different -- and every job situation is different. We all have to survive financially on our own, and as adults, we sometimes are faced with tougher decisions than we ever wished upon ourselves; so where one person draws the line in the sand may not be the same as you feel you would do. I would have no objection, for example, to tucking my ponytail under my shirt for a job request from a boss or supervisor -- as long as I'm not asked to cut off that ponytail, it's only an 8-hour workday! Once I clock out at the end of the day, as long as I can whip my ponytail out from underneath my shirt AND shake my hair loose from being restrained too, then I'm a happy man!!
- Ken
Hi Raymond,
Wonderful to hear from you again. You have such a nice full hear of hair. Best to take advantage to create something so beautiful to enjoy. The slim body frame makes long hair stand out so much better.
Like your similar photo of the fall colors in the background. Long hair and golden brown tree leaves make the best combination in a hair post. So nice to exchange photos showing how to best display long hair as a group effort and support. I appeciate your input so very much. I will aim to grow my hair longer by tucking my pony tail under at work then tying this down in a bunch.
Don
Hi Don,
What a wonderful pic of you and your fruit trees! I grew up in California and I miss the good produce available there. We had 2 plum trees and 1 peach tree in our backyard. It was great. Your trees are looking majestic in their Fall colors! And also your physique is very admirable! It does match nicely with your awesome hair I must say!
As far as your work situation, I must say I don't envy you! You just have to approach it with careful assessment. It is sad that the other long hairs left though. I do wish you strength to get through this in a good way! Please keep growing the wonderful hair and don't let it get you down!
Ted
Hi Ted,
Keeping my hair in the ponytail at work has been stable. But as soon as I get in the car for the commute home, I pull my hair out immediately and look at the mirror to confirm it looks so much better. When I get I home. I brush my hair out and down. I just need another longhair to be hired at work. The IT guys wear their hair half way down their back, frequently coming into the cubicle to fix the network with repeated crashes and breakdowns. So this helps alot.
Thanks,
Don
Looks good! Just wait and see what another year will bring you from this moment. :D
Happy 1 year Don! Keep on growing , it looks great!
