Hey fellas', how you all doing?
Just wanted to drop by and let you know that even if I haven't been posting much lately, I have been reading once in a while, and I am definitely still on my way back to having long hair!
I've actually took up brazilian jiu jitsu again, and coupled with some other factors in my personal life lately, hair has not really been my top priority.. which is a good thing, since it makes it seems as if it's growing a whole of a lot faster than it reall does ;)
So... on the 17th I will put up my 2 month video blog update, but until then, here's a really old pic of me from around 2006 or so, about a year and a half of growth into the journey. Please ignore the horribly self bleached hair, eh? :D
Stay safe, and have a wonderful week out there!
Raul.
Are you going to try dreads again when it gets long enough?
You look good both ways, sad that happened to you, but hair will grow, it will always grow, unless that horrible disease of hair loss attacks!
Hey MC!
No dreadlocks this time around, just plain old hair, and the more the better! :)
And please don't even mention that MPB issue, scares the crap outta' me! Though I did just ask my father to show me his hair upclose (he's 58) and no bald spots yet, even though it is a bit thinner in some areas!
Lets hope for the best,hehe.
LOL, this brings a smile to my face as I'm once again reminded I'm not alone. I used to carefully examine both of my parents' scalps to make sure everything looked good!
It's good to see older photos of your hair in its longer states and know that before you know it you'll be back there.
I'm kind of in a similar position on the other end of the spectrum as growth comes more slowly and is far less obvious than when it's shorter. I need to ignore it for some months and then see where I'm at.
Definitely not alone in your madness, buddy! ;)
That is really a nice perspective on things, knowing that since I have such short hair now, every single half an inch will be showing, and each month will have it's clear look.
Just focus on the cycling and your family, and before you know it, you will have added another 3-4 inches! :)
It's funny as I was going to mention that's my strategy. The only thing that messes with it is when I get sick and can't cycle at which times I tend to obsessively focus back on my hair. Hopefully I'll have a good stretch of healthy months.
Of course, my son is increasingly providing for some great fun as he's now at that stage where I can interact so much more with him compared to when he was very small. He's already coming out with hilarious things. I'm also finding it interesting to observe how his hair is growing in.
Oddly enough, I do the same, on both accounts!
I have just recently re-discovered my love and passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and have been really focused on training and studying the art pretty much fanatically lately! The fact that long hair is a real hindrance to grappling has no bearing, I will wear those silly girly hair protector helms if needed, but that time is far off in the future :D
What else, I work with small kids at Rowan's age (and younger), and I always keep mind to check their hairlines, the type and color of their hair, as well as the changing in their hair throughout the seasons and years.
Yes, we are definitely two weird fellas, Jason.. but I know just as you do, that we wouldn't have it any other way! :D
I read the interesting wikipedia article on Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I found of particular note: "BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique, taking the fight to the ground...Since its inception in 1914, its parent art of Judo was separated from older systems of Japanese ju-jitsu by an important difference that was passed on to Brazilian jiu-jitsu: it is not solely a martial art: it is also a sport; a method for promoting physical fitness and building character in young people; and, ultimately, a way (Do) of life."
It definitely sounds like something that could be very engrossing - providing physical fitness, a method of self-defense and even a way of life. It mentioned some health concerns but nothing that I saw about hair. Long hair though seems to be fairly common in at least some martial art disciplines so there must be effective ways of restraining and/or containing it.
Haha, yes, we do share more than a casual interest in all aspects of hair. We're weird in a special way or is it that we're special in a weird way?! :)
Yeah, BJJ is definitely the most fun, effective and right out one of the smartest way to learn self defense, as it's usually called the "human chess match". Definitely a nice way of keeping in shape, making some friends, and hopefully learning a thing or two along the way :)
When it comes to hair, it's extremely UNCOMMON to see grapplers of high level with long hair, simply because it tends to get in the way of many choke espaces, gets tangled in scrambles and so on, but then again, you've got world class female BJJ players as well, and a braid usually holds up quite nicely, so it's all good :)
And it's DEFINITELY Special in a weird way, bro! hehe :D
Hi Raul,
Great old pic of you from the distant past so sort of an inspiration for you while regrowing your hair.No problem getting involved in other activities while you are newly hair farming my friend.Otherwise you might tend to micromanage the growth process thus leading to another setback. In time you'll look back at this and it'll just be a distant bad memory.Cheers

Hi Mark!
I know you're right, and I can't wait for all the small checkpoints along the way back to long hair!
First one was just last week as I could start spiking my hair up again! That, and the really funny fact of having worn a beanie for a few hours, and seeing tha my 1" hair (at most) has already clreated my natural side part, even at this length! fun stuff ;)
Hi Raul,
I love this pic of you from the past, as well as you are definitely doing the right thing for yourself in the present moment by doing things to help you take your mind off of the slow growth rate of your hair growing back out again -- not that your growth rate is necessarily "slow" (compared to the average); just that even by the fastest growth rate standards, watching hair grow is like waiting for the snow will melt on the mountain tops when it's still winter-time... Just like the old saying, "A watched pot never boils!"
Anyway, good to see you are still alive & kickin' -- and as I mentioned to you in a previous reply to an earlier post of yours: your hair is growing, even as we speak!!
Onward & Downward (and spiking it upward will be fun, too - LOL),
Ken in San Francisco
Thanks Ken!
Upward for now, sideways for another 10-16 months, and finally downward after that :D
Hi Raul,
Glad to hear you're doing well and staying active! I really like this nostalgic photo of you! Hopefully you can get your hair back to that length quickly! But no bleaching please! Just long wavy dark hair this time! Thanks for checking in and keep it growing and flowing!
Ted
Thanks Ted! No bleaching, I swear!
Only brown and some grey, that's all ;)
Doing well Raul, thanks for asking :) Congrats on finding ways to keep your mind off things and making it another month! Looking forward to your video on the 17th...
