I took these here today, at work, after brushing out my hair and using a little bit of hair spray for depth. Using a product that gives a little extra body to my hair as it's very fine and straight, and can look too flat without. It seems to be a good product with no harmful chemicals (I hope). I won't mention it here because I'm not into product endorsements. If you email me privately I'll share the product name.
In light of the recent incident, that I read after posting this, I elected not to post my face here as I regularly travel via public transport through Oakland CA, and this is a public board.

I wouldn't worry about it. I've had long hair for 49 years now
and have ridden on public transportation for many years in many
different cities. I've never had a problem in any of them.
But then I don't fall asleep on public transit and am fully aware of my surroundings.
Very good points, and I admit lately since I had not had much trouble I had gotten perhaps a bit too complacent and would rest on the way home. Think if I just keep my eyes and ears open I should be good.
Here's the other pic I hesitated on uploading earlier.

Looks great, Dave - how long have you been growing your hair?
I started growing my hair out around about late October of 2011, trimmed it a bit for a job interview I had in December of the same year, and since have allowed it to grow uncut, and untrimmed. So that'd make about 2 years growth so far. Thanks for the compliments, btw. I'm hoping that by this time next year it will be just brushing the middle of my lower back.
I'd concur. About a decade ago there were discussions here on MLHH about people messing with your hair on transit or in movie theaters, if your hair was behind you where you couldn't see it. This is not a new problem. Little boys were reputed to dip little girls' ponytails in inkwells when at their school desks in the 1800s. The moral to the story was to keep your hair where you can see it. Of course, if you fall asleep, you can't see anything.
Unless someone uses lighter fluid or some other flammable item to spread the flames, no one is going to cause much injury if they were to set your clothes on fire. Clothing at first burns very slowly, with a flame about the size of one on a candle. If you were awake you'd feel it and probably smell it before it got larger. And then you'd swat it out.
Hair, by itself, is not particularly flammable either. Heat or flames from something else will singe hair and destroy it. Also, if your hair is covered with a flammable hair product, it could burn. Several years ago at the SF longhair party, one of the guys suggested we all put one hair strand apiece into an ashtray and then burn them all. It was some hippie mystical thing, I guess. Well, the hair would not burn. They then squirted lighter fluid on it. It still didn't burn. The mystical experience turned to one of lots of laughter.
Oren has told us about how a flying ember at a campfire several years ago landed in his beard and the heat from the trapped ember singed enough of his beard that he had to cut it back quite a bit. However, we saw Oren recently, so we know the fire did not progress and burn Oren to the ground.
People are basically made of meat. Throw a lit match on a steak and see how much burns. People who have burn injuries are harmed when heat from something nearby that IS flammable injures them, just like coals in a barbecue will cook that steak. Sasha, the man burned in Oakland was asleep, and the fire set in his clothing got big enough to burn him bad before he woke up.
Idiots can singe your hair or clothes, they can cut them, or they can write on them. This is rarely going to be attempted though, if you are awake, and if you have anything vulnerable like a ponytail tossed around to where you can see it.
By the way, if you sleep on the subway, idiots will also help themselves to your laptop, etc. Today's lesson is, "Don't fall asleep on transit."
Incidentally, per the news today the man who set Sasha on fire admitted it was "a homophobic thing", so he is being tried as an adult and for a hate crime. His name was also released to the public, so now he will forever be known as the one who committed that awful crime.

One thing I would add to this is in a number cities the
buses and trains now have video cameras on them for
catching various criminal incidents. So they'll have video
of someone cutting your hair, spitting on the bus driver,
or assaulting the bus driver. I'm surprised they don't have
this in Oakland where this incident occurred.
But yeah the moral of the story is don't fall asleep on the subway. Among other things your wallet/back pack/laptop/cell
phone/etc. may be gone.
Someone should get Petula Clark to sing s song about that.
Me thinks it'll be a hit.
They do, and the act was caught by the on-board video.
The police did not release it because it was too graphic.

Tell me, Dave - I have real thin, fine hair, too
Your hair looks great in this picture\\
Fitz
Nice pics Dave, you have nice hair... keep growing!
Thanks! I shall do just that :) Both for reasons of my cultural heritage, and for personal reasons :)
Hi David, your hair looks great! When you had your trim was it the back you trimmed, or all around? I too had a trim about 3-4 months in on the back of my neck and i'm hoping that mine will look as good as yours in another year!
IT WILL, Tommy
I had the trim all around, as I was interviewing for a job at a big University, but I didn't have it trimmed much.
Thanks for the hair compliments :) I work hard daily to keep it looking good.

Hi David,
Wow! Thanks for sharing these wonderful pics of your hair! You have such nice hair and I hope you continue to let it grow! It would look just lovely at waist length I think! Does your hair have gray in it? I can't really tell from the pic. The natural "V" hemline is beautiful! Welcome to the board and I definitely look forward to your future updates my friend!
P.S. Be careful on the public transit!
Ted
It does, yes - though it's not a whole lot, but it is noticeable. After 48 years on this Earth, I guess it's expected :)
Thanks for the compliments on how my hair looks - it's grown on it's own into the V line you see in the pic, and I'm just letting it grow how it will, while keeping it neatly brushed and so forth.
Oh yes, that I will for certain. I used to drop my guard and snooze lightly - never had anything stolen (all my valuable stuff is in my backpack which I keep wrapped in my arms) - but I will be keeping my eyes open behind my sunglasses going forward.

I've been riding public transit for alot of years in a number
of different cities with my long hair. I've never had a problem
and most of the time I wear it down and loose. And many of these
times it's been on subway cars that were jam packed with people.
I've never had a problem.
Just be aware of your surroundings, and if your hair feels threatened then just drape your hair down your chest instead
of your back.
I'm also very careful not to fall asleep on the bus/subway.
Gorgeous hair!!!
Your hair looks really good in both pictures, and it seems like a very good amount of growth for 2 years!
