Usually I wear my mane in a ponytail - both practic and makes less people adress me as a woman when they see me with my hair free flowing. Do you long hair guys wear your manes free flowing?
Most of the time I wear it free and loose. I'll tie it in a pony tail/braid it/bun it/pig tail it when it is windy/storming/or the hair can get damaged.
As far as being mistaken for a woman, since i'm often wearing cut off shorts from the rear I get mistaken for a woman whether it
is loose or in a pony tail.
But then i'm 59 years old, I don't care what others think.
I gave up caring that they think years ago.
Your hair is looking good.
I see cut offs as out of style like some people see the hippie clothes I wear are. But I have never seen them as feminine. Cut offs were very popular among guys in the 1960s and 1970s. I wore them then, as did lots of guys. Manufacturers soon thereafter came out with jeans shorts to cater to the look, but with finished hems they always looked sort of dorky. Cargo shorts seem to have taken root as the preferred shorts style since then instead, and jeans (now available in far more varieties) reign as the preferred style for long pants.
Well, some people think long hair is out of style [grin] and some claim they think long hair is feminine, but (1) if something is part of your core identity, you are going to sport it, (2) you don't really look feminine if you are a guy, and (3) thus that "looks feminine" concept is hogwash.
Do you really encounter people who think cut offs are feminine? That to me seems awfully strange. When they were in vogue, I recall more guys than gals wearing cut offs, probably because many gals saw them as too trashy.
Gals nowadays buy shorts that have much shorter legs than the ones that guys get. Guys get them with legs that come close to the knees. I presume you're not tearing the legs off at a girly length. If a guy goes too far in that direction, well, "something hangs out"! (Of course, you really won't look like a girl then!)
Bill
I hate cargo shorts, i've never found a pair that I liked. Too many pockets.
All of my cut off shorts have an inseam of 3-6 inches.
Usually when i'm mistaken for a woamn it's because of
the combination of hving long hair, having a rather slight
build (5'9" 160 pounds) and wearing cut off shorts.
So yeah cut off shorts went out of style years ago but then so
did guys with long hair. But then at the age of 59 after 49
years i'm still wearing my hair long (it will stay long until the day I die) and i'll contineu to wear cut off shorts until
the day I die. I like having long hair and I don't care if
it is out of style. Same goes with wearing cut off shorts.
I hear you. Same here with the hair. Same here with the beard. Same here with the casual hippie clothes.
I've wanted the hair and beard since my earliest memory. I came of age in the era when many of my contemporaries were hippies, and the clothing they wore dovetailed perfectly with my hair identity right at the age when most people's identity is firmed up. I don't own a razor, nor do I own any dress up clothes. I will look like this for all of my days, just as you say about your identity. We are like a cowboy who swears he will die with his boots on.
All people have a core identity that they will not change. Then they add to their look with whatever they see as cool at the time. "Born longhairs" have hair in their core identity, while "social longhairs" have hair as an "add to their look" item. We have both types of longhairs on MLHH of course. And core identity extends beyond hair. One's sex is such usually. And most people have clothing boundaries. Most guys say they wouldn't be caught dead in a skirt. This statement sheds light on their core identity's extending to clothing and on where they draw the line.
As I said, I hear you. I hear you completely.
Bill
I started growing my hair long in 1964 (The Beatles on Ed Sullivan)
and started wearing cut off shorts around that time too. Throughout the 60s I continued to grow my hair, continued to wear cut off shorts, and now 49 yesrs later i've still got the long hair, still wear the cut off shorts.
Throughout those summers in the 60s I was one of the original
hippies. I never did drugs (except Marijuana) but I continued with the long hair, the cut off shorts and spend all the summer going barefoot.
So now 49 years later I still flatly refuse to grow up. At the age of 59 i've still got the long hair, still wear the cut off shorts, but I do almost never go barefoot anymore. But at
59 I flatly refuse to grow up and cut my hair and retire the cut off shorts.
I do own a razor and have some "dress up" clothes, none of them
expensive.
I hate getting dressed up and only do it when I absolutely have to.
Of course when I do get dressed up the hair is still long and
loose most of the time. (for weddings, funerals, etc.)
To me there are clearly two types of men.
If you go into a department store, you'll see women's clothing in one area, and you'll discover there are two areas that have clothing for men. In some stores, they call the groups "men" and "young men", but age has nothing to do with it. I've seen other stores call the two groups "men" and "guys". Outside of a clothing store, for want of any better terms, I refer to the two male groups as yuppies and hippies, two terms that were commonly used for them at some point in my life.
To me this distinction is as strong as I make between the sexes. One could say I see the world as having two sexes (male and female), but three genders (women, yuppies, and hippies).
I am a guy, a hippie. I shop for clothing in the section that has clothes for guys. For me to dress otherwise is repulsive, because to me it is cross-dressing. I'd no more wear a suit or tie than I'd wear high heels or a tutu.
Bill
I definetly fall into the hippie category. I started out as a hippie in the 60s and still am today at the age of 59.
I found this photo in the archives which shows how short my cut off shorts are generally.
They are generally in the 3-6" inseam length and i've been
wearing hem since back in the 1960s and continue to wear them
today. Like my long hair they are, after all these years,
my trademark.
I guess you could say the cut off shorts and the long hair
are a carry over from my hippie days in the 1960s. Both may be out of style but I don't care, i'll keep wearing both.
Wonderful hair. Much better shown in cut-off jeans.
My in seam length is much more variable when cutting around worn out holes in the jeans. I have an extended collection of cut-off jeans in my wardrobe. With new jeans priced at $75.00 the last time I looked, my cut-off jeans collection now vastly exceeds the number of new jeans. Then the cut-off jeans join my "rags" pile after too many holes appear.

Hey Bill,
Interesting thoughts here as I've always had the opinion that those shorts guys wear nowadays are so long in the legs they might as well be wearing pants!I've seem some cut just above the knee but also a couple inches below as well.I feel if you want to wear shorts then wear shorts that are really shorts ;)I like short inseams so mine are normally in the three to six inch range with some exceptions of old Levi shorts with the dorky hem that are almost twelve inches.I did make one of my own "custom" cutoffs when I bought a cheap pair of skinny jeans where the legs were so narrow I couldn't even get them on!I ultimately just chopped the legs off to make shorts out of them.Wasn't worth returning them.I made those super short so they are reserved to around the house wear:) LOL.Here is a pic of me back in the late 90s in some shorts! LOL. Cheers
Mârk
My guess, Mark, is that to get shorts that short, you find few at stores and you are left with making them yourself. I have that problem with shirts in shades of purple. Catalogs just have that color for girls. I think I look good in purple, and it's a great hippie color. I got so tired of never finding any purple shirts that I finally got a white shirt and just dyed it purple.
No one has ever thought I looked like a girl when I was wearing the purple shirt. Maybe the color distinction matters to people who look androgynous so manufacturers avoid making purple shirts for men, but I'm not the least bit androgynous.
Bill
Now, honestly, does anyone think I look like a girl in my purple shirt?
Bill
Hi Bill,
I have to agree that purple is a good color for you and in no way does it make you look girly.lol. Actually if you venture into certain designer stores of men's clothing you can actually buy shirts in vivid colors, including purple and pink! I see men in NYC dressed in suits with colored shirts in such hues.Maybe it's more of a city thing than something you'd see in rural areas.
As for short shorts like mine bet you'd find them in the Castro if you looked hard enough;)Lol. Other alternative is to shop the women's section of the store.
Mârk
Great pic, Mark. There is nothing about you, with broad shoulders and full arms, narrow hips. it's definitely male. From the front or back. Hair not withstanding. Those shorts are defo=initely short and I wore such in the 70s and early 80s. Cutoffs were a natural. I do wear cargo shorts and the like, however ,they generally are no longer than mid thigh, or at leat 3 inches above the knee. I have been told I have great legs. So why not, show off, If ya got it, flaunt it.
Most of my cut off shorts are 3 inches or 4 inches long. I have a few that are six inches long. I do have some dressier shorts that are knee length or longer but i rarely wear them except on special occasions.
Great pic Mark! I love that hair man! The different natural colors are awesome!
Ted
Goldenmane,
I usually wear my hair down and as you call it "free flowing". Only wear it in a tail when I want to keep it out of my way for example when I am cooking or working in the garden. I prefer the way it looks down and never get references to being a woman primarily due to the length and thickness of my beard.
A nice "tail" to tell you have there. Keep it growin' 'n' flowin'1
peace, jonalbear
I generally wear mine in a tail. It is easier to keep out of the way. particulalry when on job sites. However, I like the loose feeling so I will 'Let my hair down" when at home or relaxing. Usually my Moustache is a giveaway. but just last week I was called 'Ma-Am' by error by a store clerk. He was oh so embarassed and sorry when he realized the mistake. 1st time I had that happen in decades. When i was a skinny teenager and didn't even have the requisite "Teen Stache" it happened fairly regularly. Smetimes it was blatant smarminess by neanderthals of the period (late 60s ,early 70s.)
Hi, bro, when did you start to grow out your hair? How old were you when it was early 70s? Just curieous
I wore a "princeton" style of haircut when I was 12 in 1964, When I saw the beatles on the Ed Sullivan show, I was one of thousands of lads across the country who started combing their hair differently the next morning. It was a neasy transition as the cut I wore was londer on top than most Boys cuts of the day. As it grew out I had just one row with my parents. They relented and allowed me to grow it so long as I kept it neat & clean. which I did, and would have done anyway. So in answer to the first part of your question, 1964. I did have to run a few gauntlets with school dress cdes and weathered the barbsd of some of my peers and some adults. Being slender on top of having what was considered long hair in the latter 60s could be dicey. But I survived, as did many of my friends who also chose to grow their hair. As to the 2nd part. My hair in the 70s was 2/3 of the way down my back. Just about what I have, today. though it was auburn and copper with none of the white mixed in as I have today.
Cool. Another question, I know that little boys and adults in 70s wore their hair long. When did you observe that men and boys started to wear their hair short? I can't think of a reason why long hair on men became popular yet soon died out.
I started growing my hair long in 1964 and it is still long today (49 years later). I'm not sure when in the 70s short hair
became fashionable. I kept mine long despite what the other
sheep did. After so many years of fighting the establishment
to keep my long hair long I refused to give in at any time
and cut my hair.
Hi Goldenmane,
Wow! That is a spectacular thick ponytail you have there! I just love the color and straightness of your hair my friend! I can only hope to have hair that good looking! I do thank you for the inspiration man! Please keep it growing!
Ted
C'mon Fitz! I would have to disagree with you here! But we all want to see it man! Patience my brother!
Ted
Honestly, Ted - I am OK with it - I know what I got and I am OK with it - it's just that this guy has such phenomenal hair and I am only admittedly envious... but I am sure my personality makes up for my thinning hair... HA!
Hi Fitz,
I am happy to hear you are content with what ya got! But as long as we have hair like Goldenmane's to inspire us, everything's good! As for a good personality, that's something that is great to have! Good looks + crappy personality = fail. Please keep it growing and give it a chance to grow!
Ted
I was at the mall today to do some shopping and something odd
happened, something that had never happened before.
I was walking through the mall with my hair down and loose
and a woman at one of the counters addressed me as ma'am.
Now what wsa unusual about this is she saw me from the front,
not the back. So even though I was wearing cut off shorts
and my hair was down and loose the moustache wasn't a dead
giveaway. Neither was all the grey hair. Oh well i found it amusing.
All the other tiems this has happened they saw me from the back,
this wss the first time from the front.
Your hair is looking great..nice color and thickness. Thanks for posting!
I wear a ponytail at work, actually most of the time, I get too hot otherwise... I don't in church (not sure how at would be received).. but I have seen a few. (rarely)
Keep growin and flowin!
For what it's worth regarding ponytails in church: I have NEVER seen Jesus portrayed with a ponytail.
Bill
You have a point....
so keeping my hair down (some say "out") is what I will do..
Thanks Bill.

This reminds me of something funny that happened at my church. The wife of the pastor was behind me and I didn't know that as I flipped by ponytail back. My ponytail bounced off her and she was not amused.
Scott
Well, Scott, your ponytail is long enough that it could be classified as a dangerous weapon!
Bill
Some people just take life way too seriously... Scott and Bill, somehow I don't think you are two of those types of people! HA!
When we originally posted that photo, I entitled the message "Hair in my mouth". I'm sure everyone who clicked on it thought I would be talking about my own hair getting in my mouth! [chuckle]
Bill
This is too funny Scott!
Ted
That does sound like a funny story, too bad she didn't think so!
Thanks so much for sharing!
Even though I'm jewish i've spent a lot of time in recent years
in church for services,, weddings, funerals, etc. After all
these years, my long hair is my trade mark, and i'm not going to
hide it in a pony tail. after all i've had long hair for 49
years now and that isn't going to change as long as i'm alive.
I wear mine "free flowing" essentially all the time. Sometimes with a cap, sometimes not. I also have had the occasional "maam", but I think it goes with the territory.
Gold - you have fantastic hair!
This might be inappropriate to ask, but I'd like to see a face shot of you with that hair beautiful hair flowing some time. Man, if people are critical of your hair it has to be because they are totally jealous.
-------------------
Your hair is absolutely gorgeous. This is among the best I have ever seen. (I keep my hair in a 3 foot plus segmented tail with 13 hair ties.)
Scott
I seem to wear a ponytail (more accurately, a 'queue' as has been pointed out) a lot. Most of the time that I'm 'working,' I tie it back, including when I'm in the pulpit. Lately I've been experimenting with buns, but I haven't gotten consistently good results. When I'm at leisure I like to wear it loose, but I'll tie it back when I'm cooking or eating.
