Okay everybody. Now that my hair is getting some decent length, I am finding it gets in the way when I shower. What I would like to know is how you put it up and out of the way to avoid soap from getting in your hair. I thought about waiting until I wash my body and then wash my hair. I'm kind of liking this problem though! It means I'm getting somewhere lengthwise finally! Thanks much for your replies!
Ted
Ted,
Shampoo your hair first. When you rinse it out, it will run all over the parts of the body where you might otherwise wash with soap. Condition. While the conditioner is in your hair, washed the 'other' body parts with soap, shower gel or whatever. When you rinse the conditioner out, you'll be rinsing the rest of your body. That's my routine anyway. Congrats on the 'milestone'!
Don
Thanx Don, that's what I have been doing... other people's YT videos had that advice...
Keep growin!

Hi Don,
I thank you for the great advice! Thanks for the grats on the milestone! I can't wait for the crazy ends to grow some more so I can trim them even. I will not do that until I get my longest hairs to at least mid-back length. For what it's worth, I have started using the Suave professionals products. They are working very well for me and worth the money.
Ted
I really do not know why you are making an issue of this, just sweep it out of the way or lean you head.
It really is a non-issue.
And your blunt impolite replies are never appreciated by me. So please just keep your opinions to yourself.
Hi David,
Thanks for your reply! I was just asking a simple question here. Great day to you my friend!
Ted
Reality is not impolite. You must understand an not convey to the un initiated that having long hair is anything unusual or demanding special care. It is simply part of life's rich tapestry, however big you make it seem.
Well, you must also understand to not convey a snobbish attitude to the uninitiated. I don't know what you mean by reality not being impolite. However, I do agree that having long hair is part of life's rich tapestry.
I would mention that one of the grest things about growing
your long is learning what hair care routine works for you.
Try handling the hair in various ways and see what works for
you.
One of the great things about the journey to long
hairdom is you can experiment with many different ways of
wearing your hair and the many ways of caring for your hair.
There are many different ways to approach the challenge
of hair care.
Hi LHIA,
Thanks for your reply! I appreciate the tips and will experiment with different methods. Yes the journey to having long hair is definitely an adventure-at least for me it is! Right now I'm just waiting for all of my hair to sit behind my shoulders nicely. Seems to be taking forever!
Ted
It does seem to take forever. Hair grows at 1/2 inch per month so it will seem to take forever. But then it comes with the territory. All you can do is wait.
Yes Ted, I am right there with you, as mine curls up and bounces on my shoulders.... (have been patiently waiting just over 4 years, and this is all there is so far....)
The Spaf Man
We will get there man! I do know my hair has slowed down growing and also doesn't have the same thickness as when I was younger. Oh well, as long as I don't go bald, I'm happy! Just give your hair a chance! You may be surprised!
Ted
i put mine in a pony tail, it helps eliminate tangles.
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the reply! I will most likely tail it when I want to keep it dry. Looking forward to your next update my friend!
Ted
I never try to keep it dry in the shower. I'll move the hair around to avoid the soap, but I always get it wet and use
conditioner.
Hi Ted
I would not worry about the soap getting in your hair haha I don't think soap can damage your hair at any point. Besides, its not that you are putting soap on your hair and letting it there for hours.. so dont worry about it :)
In my case, I put my hair back but it is impossible for the soap not to get into your hair a bit . Try putting it up in a pony tail
Hi Dave,
Thanks for your reply! I will probably put it in a tail when I want to try to keep it dry. Otherwise, I will follow Don's advice. You are probably correct here about the soap etc.
Looking forward to your next update my friend!
Ted
I condition my hair first, then soap the rest of they body being careful to move hair out of the way to avoid the soap.
I don't put it up, when I wash my back i just drape the hair over my shoulder and on my chest.
Hi LHIA,
Thanks so much for the reply! Your method makes sense and once I get enough length I will try to drape the hair over the shoulder. Right now I am struggling to just get my hair to all sit behind my shoulders and stay there!
By the way, I wanted to tell you that I liked the pic you posted with your cutoff shorts. I finally got to see what the back of your hair looks like. It is looking great I must say! Thanks for digging that out of the archives!
Ted
You're welcome.
That photo was from 2011. I need to post a newer photo, one
with better lighting to show the grey.
I shower pretty much the same with long hair as I did with short hair. I just push it out of the way as much as pos but no big deal if you get soap in it a bit. It's only for a mo and it soon rinses out when you rinse the rest of your head. I don't bother putting it up.
I shampoo and condition my hair separately.
But hey, I know that's not what you want to hear; you want to hear that long hair is a whole new adventure! But sadly - unless you have REALLY long hair - it's not. Haha, sorry! :D
Big congrats on your hair getting nice and long though. That's a really nice 'problem'!

----------------------------------------------------
Hi Damon,
Thanks a bunch for your reply! I am going to start putting my hair up unless I get lazy (which will probably happen!). I do appreciate the congrats on the hair getting long! It really is surprising me I must say! Starting to lay very nice on the front and back of the shoulders. But one of these days I do hope to have really long hair! My minimum goal remains waist length! I will accept nothing less man!
Ted
I wash my hair. I condition it, then comb it out with a wide tooth comb and then twist it, wrap it and secure it with a hair clip. It works wonders. When I'm done with the body I take out the hair clip. It prevents tangles and helps the conditioner work while I wash my body. I find that if I let my hair down the ends don't get enough conditioner time. Once the hair clip is out I just rinse my hair and body at the same time.
Hi Giacco,
I appreciate the informative reply! I really like your idea and plan on getting some of these clips. I will probably only get the largest ones though. I do think leaving the clip in longer helps the condition get to the ends better. I definitely do not like the tangling factor with my hair hanging loose. This is really a problem until I apply the conditioner. That's why I only use very little shampoo. Thanks again for the info!
Ted
Mostly unhelpful reply for your situation:
Unhelpful Reply: I leave it in the bun it's been in all day. And fairly often, when I am washing my hair, it is following a regular body wash (where I wasn't in the mood to wash hair or hadn't had time to detangle) so it is just a rinse for my body in the process.
I wouldn't worry too much about a bit of soap, esp. if you are shampooing and conditioning afterwards anyway.
Others have mentioned lots of ways of handling it practically.
Hi Trolleypup,
Thanks much for your reply! I will probably start washing my hair after I wash my body with the soap. I will not worry about a little soap getting on the hair.
Ted
I really don't want to see YouTube videos of guys in the shower, LOL! Of course, tastes differ.
I'm not sure what you mean here Alun. I wasn't asking for videos of this you know? And I sure don't want to see videos of guys in the shower either!
