Today a rather - to my mind at least - pushy woman came up to me while waiting for the train. She invited herself to comment on my hair saying it was a very long and well conditioned mane. That people on the street have said to me before and I have always thanked them for that. But this lady went on and said that I as a man didn't really need a long mane like that. That it would have suited a woman. And that she thought I should seriously consider donating my long hair to Locks of Love - a lot of poor sick kids could benefit from my haircut. I must admit I became absolutely speechless. In some aspects she was actually right. These poor kids needed my hair more than me. I told her I would think about it. But I feel that this is really my hair and I'm the one to decide whether to have it cut short or not. But I admit she brought me in doubt. Well - just wanted to share this experience with the board. All Best Goldenmane
Hate to say it Goldenmane but your response should have been more like either mind your own business after that LOL suggestion or that the day my longhair cures cancer I'd be happy to save the kid's life and if that were true you could likely sell your hair for hundreds of thousands of dollars to anyone wanting their cancer cured. Moral of the story is that wigs don't cure cancer. Cheers

to make wigs from. I have a whole box, enough to make 2 or 3 wigs. Volunteers will have to line all the hairs up to make a wig. It can be done. You can have your cake and eat it too.

Locks of Love doesn't donate to cancer patients, only for kids with hair loss from other conditions, only to girls, and either sells or throws away most of the hair. At least I suppose your hair is so nice they wouldn't throw it away. I am so glad mine is grey and hennaed, because they would only throw it away, which gives me the perfect excuse not to donate it!
Don't do it. LoL is a scam, more or less.
And it's mainly just a way for people, usually women, to try and shame men with long hair into cutting it off. Usually their motives are sinister. They don't like long hair on men and want you to conform.
"As a man you don't need hair that long."
What a blatantly sexist thing to say. Unfortunately, that's our society. Sad isn't it?
And women DO need long hair? Lol.
The only one who can decide what YOU need is YOU :)
You know, I couldn't have said it better myself.God bless ya :)Cheers

Hi Goldenmane,
Ha! If I had your mane I would have just swished it from side to side and rolled my eyes. I really don't believe she deserved any responses. Locks of Love is not what most people think. They charge for the wigs on a sliding scale. Not really a great deal. Please keep your beautiful mane my friend!
Ted
I would have invited her to cut hers for that reason first, then point out her sexism when she objected.
.
Goldenmane!
Have heard LOL burns a lot of the hair they receive because they have too much or it is not the right texture. Keep your mane man!
peace,
jonalbear
I would refer you to Hair Religions site.
It should be noted that 95% of the hair LOL gets ends up in the trash. Yes Cancer is a horrible disease and it's effects on hair
is horrilbe, but 95 % of hair ends up being trashed. Also LOL needs money more than they need hair.
My goodness, long-haired men are magnets for busybodies. Really, who asked her?
When I had longer hair I got the LoL question a few times. At the time I deflected the question saying that my hair wasn't long enough for them to want it. But, that wasn't a good answer. A polite "mind your own business" would have been better.
For anyone facing this kind of shaming (and that's what it is), I would maybe also point out that 95% of men who never grow their hair out will never be donating to LoL because they get their 12 inches of hair taken off a half-inch at a time. Does that make them "selfish"?
I have to hand it to LoL in one way. They get people to give them lots of word-of-mouth advertising by playing on their moral vanity.
Chris
I love it. I'll have to remember that one.
In all the 49 years i'd had long hair i've never had it suggested that I donate my hair to LOL. but then they would not take my hair with it being all grey now.
Amazing what total strangers think you should do...
How old do you think she was?
That one idiotic comment sums her up really. The bit about LoL is just extra BS. The woman was a total sexist twit. No wonder you were speechless; how can you make a sensible reply to complete brainless garbage uttered by an ignorant, prejudiced prat?
Personally, I wouldn't have bothered to dignify her lunacy with a reply - just looked her up and down, muttered something about the rising cost of medications these days, and then quickly distanced myself as if she were a bad smell.

Medications? I would have lamented the high cost of pesticides.
Bill
an ignorant, prejudiced prat?
Haha Damon! I love it!
Ted
Its your hair, your choice. When do we get front hair pic?
Sad state of affairs!
I would have told her in no uncertain terms that syntheitic wigs are perfectly OK to wear!
I was at the wife's family do this afternoon where there were a whole bunch of youngsters!! (25-30 yrs) who were appreciating my hair whilst all the oldies (70+) were drawing daggers, but what was most telling was that all the 25-30's had started losing their hair big time so the ongoing joke was on me as they all insisted to all these oldies that I was harvesting the hair for their toupees!
If she has some hair, tell her that if she is willing to donate all of her hair. If she does, then I will do it too. If she doesn't, saying that she will look weird, and horrible, then I will refuse to get it cut for the same reason.
"As a man he doesn't need too much of the hair" No, it is needed to attract women, and it looks great. Poor kids? Use synthetic wigs
My understanding is that LOL trashes 95% of hair donations and that
all children receive wigs made of synthetic hair.
Oh and as a man he does need all that hair. And he needs at whatever length he wants to have it.
Uh, no, they don't trash 95% of the hair they get...they "dispose" of it...some to the garbage, some to human hair extension companies.
Anyway. My short and sweet answer to people like this is to inform them that LOL is a front for the human hair extension industry. The reality is that it is a really good funding source for the friends and family who run the "charity".
It's also an anti-longhair hate group. That is not its sole purpose, just like being an anti-gay hate group is not the sole purpose of some religions which, though, have hate as one of their activities. Hate, unfortunately, is popular with groups lacking morals because as you imply, hate sells.
Many LOL activities are fueled by a fervent disrespect for longhaired men, and LOL does nothing to discourage participants from such hate behavior, which implicates them in it. Usually when LOL is brought up here on MLHH, it is because one of their adherents has directed such hate at someone in our social group. Those adherents don't all individually in isolation come up with those same lines which they feed us. They get them from somewhere, and that "somewhere" is LOL.
Bill
Maybe she has a point, disadvantaged kids is way more important than hair. Hair is just a moment in time, it grows it dies it falls away. Just like nature, you can't hold onto everything in life, everything changes constantly. Hair doesn't make a person, it's just a body, a creature, the real person is inside. We should not be defined by the length of our hair.
But donations to LOL should be 100% voluntary. Nobody has the right to bully a man with long hair to cut his hair and donate it
to LOL. And any woman who suggests it should be willing to
cut off all her hair to donate.
But yes hair does make the person. I've had long hair for 49
years now and after all these years it is a critical part of me.
Cutting my hair would be akin to cutting off my right arm or left leg. I would deeply resent anyone who suggested I cut my
hair to donate to LOL. Yes Cancer is a horrible disease but
that doesn't give anyone the right to guilt me into cutting it.
Besides LOL needs money more than they need hair.
