Small update. Mane reached length where I have to decide: BIG chop or go for elbow and butt length.
Everything looks good. Go for butt length (and probably more)
Thank you very much for your kind words and encouragement!!
Hi Goldenmane,
If I had hair like yours, I could never go for a big chop! Why not just maintain this length? Can I ask you why you have to decide?
Ted
Hi Ted, Thank you very much for your friendly comments - and encouragement! I must admit I love my long mane - feeling it around me. At the same time it requires a LOT of time. I hope to see it cover my ass one day and that I can "stand" the waiting. Best Goldenmane

Nooooooooo, grow it longer. I sure wish my mane was that thick.
Scott
Goldenmane,
You are on a Men's Long Hair board run and used by guys who are extremely keen on long hair for men. What do you expect our answer to be??? Go and get a haircut so you look like a clone???
You have already been growing your hair for "almost three years now". You say you have had a few negative comments but your very username "Goldenmane" implies that you yourself are very proud of your hair. And rightly so. It is awesome!
Why after nearly three years are you now insecure and undecided? Has your situation changed? Is it new pressure you didn't have before? A new job? Looking for promotion and need to conform? Another change of direction? Fill us in, dude.
And yeah, my opinion is predictably like everyone else on this board. Your long hair is amazing. Keep it long if you can.
Damon

Or are you now just kinda bored with your hair and need encouragement to carry on growing it? Or is your repeated question just a subtle way of fishing for compliments? :)
Damon
------------------------------------------------
Given all the factors you mention, the question strikes me as being disingenuous.
Yup, the inclusion of a fresh pic with every post suggests a fishing expedition. Plus the total lack of interest in posts by OTHER people.
My own vanity is massive but I do TRY to curb it now and then! :)
Damon
Hi Damon,
With his hair, he is entitled to all the vanity he wants! But it would be nice to let us know that is why he is asking these questions. Nothing wrong with vanity! I very much dislike people who are always down!
Ted
Haha! Don't encourage me! :D
Damon
--------------------------------------
But you wear it so well my friend! The truth is the truth!
Ted
I hear you, man. There's either a man behind that mane, or a troll. Real people show their faces and show with pictures or words what they do with their lives when they are not modeling their hair. And, as you say, they take an interest in other people. I recall the word "camaraderie" being on our "about" page.
Once the "man or troll" question pops up, then inevitable other questions come to mind. Is it a girl? And my goodness, are those extensions? Real hair tapers as it gets further from the scalp.
Bill
Posting one's face definitely goes a long way towards helping the community feel like it's getting to know a person. Otherwise, it's seems like the person has something to hide.
I'd say his hips are those of a man. I don't feel like it's a woman posting. It's possible he has a very long terminal length and that with frequent cuts he's able to maintain such a blunt and thick hemline at that length. It's certainly unusual for a man to be able to achieve this but definitely possible. We have some members here with such thick hair that I think they'd have a similar look if they went with a blunt cut at the length shown in his pictures.
If he had posted showing his face and said something about himself, I feel like you probably do, that those questions would not have come up since what we see is plausible. The "humanity" stamp is what has to be attached to anyone's message, though, to make sure it gets delivered.
Gays have an expression for such aloof behavior. They call it "S&M", "Stand and Model". It's applied to men who come into a bar and just stand there and look pretty, but never engage others in communication of any depth.
Maybe the guy is just shy, and he's doing the S&M thing as a shield. Maybe despite his having long hair, this is his first major plunge into associating with other longhaired men. Maybe he has yet to learn that we don't bite!
It takes some longhairs time to get used to the reality that they are longhairs. I see gay men walking through the Castro holding hands but looking over their shoulders timidly, like, "Is this really okay?" Get real, you're in the Castro. Forget the "what you are is bad" line. Well, some longhaired men have to undergo a similar coming out experience. All their lives they have heard that longhairs are bad. Seeing other longhairs makes them frown. When others start making them smile, then they've come around. Only then do they not only have long hair, but they are a longhair.
Bill
What is the Castro? I'm not familiar with it. Is that what they
call the Cuban district in Miami?
As the saying goes, "Google is your friend". Try putting in, "the castro".
Bill
Oh, I should have added, if you put in "little havana", you can read about the Cuban district in Miami.
B
Oh shit! I've been spotted! But at least I now know the official terminology for posers like me! :)

WOW !!! - Bill = when did you git so wise - very insightful !!! hugs from downunder CEM. :))
It's a very long process. [wink] It will give you gray hairs. Lots of them!
B
I would mention that it is possible. I hsve one guy friend who has butt length hair that is cut straight accross (not tapered).
Yeah, I treat people in online communities pretty much like I treat people face-to-face. And if you're meeting s stranger face-to-face in a pub or at a party or whatever, it'd be pretty weird if you covered your face with a towel and turned your back to them so they could only see your hair! I think most people would freak if you did that to them! :D
And conversations normally include things like your first name, what you do for a living, or what you're studying if at uni, and all sorts of stuff. It's just normal conversation. AND you listen to what the other person is saying and reply. A one-way conversation ain't gonna get very far!
Damon
-------------------------------------------------
It's not the pictures that are the problem nor the vanity. On the contrary, with a mane as good as his, he can post pretty much all the photos he wants as they're very inspirational.
I don't like feeling baited and played. That's how the post came across and it leaves a sour taste.
Yeah, his hair is truly magnificent. If my own hair was as cool as that, I'd be posting pics all over the place! But to keep asking if he should cut it or not seemed a bit of a false question designed to elicit a predictable response. Why not simply introduce himself and say 'here's my hair'? And if he was REALLY thinking of cutting it, explain WHY.
Like you said, the question came across as a bit disingenuous.
Damon

LOL, I love what you just said above, Damon -- and is one of the reasons I so enjoy your wonderful contributions to this community!
Go ahead, be vain, it won't bother me any -- why do you think a fat old geezer like me loves to show off his own hair? Answer: because my hair is pretty much the only thing left on me that is still something I can brag about... everything else on my body has definitely gone "South!" (LOL)
- Ken
No way, dude! Your hair is to die for and your personality is to die for. Just watch what you eat and keep up your exercise, and your body will soon be a worthy temple for them. A demi-god among mere mortals! :)
No way are you a "fat old geezer". You ain't obese, you're a long way from being old, and real geezers don't have an iota of your wit, positive outlook and zest for life. You rock, man!
But that's more than enough praise from me! Praise just doesn't come naturally for me; I'm much happier when I'm insulting people - especially people with short hair. Now where's that obnoxious short-haired cousin of mine? I need to vent! :)
Damon

I started to think with the Locks of Love post*, and more so with this post: Goldenmane, are you for real or just getting your jollies yanking people around with some kind of fake pictures?
I saw what Bill posted below and while I don't think Goldenmane is a woman (those look like man-hands to me), the eponymous mane could be a wig. Is that hair not a little too perfect? It would also explain why there are no front shots, if the hairline would look fake.
I think people should be given the benefit of the doubt, unless there is a good reason to think otherwise. I think there are enough reasons here.
Chris
*I posted a reply to the LoL post, but wondered even then if the description of the lady was a little over-the-top.
Hi Damon,
I have to say you said what I'm sure a lot of us were thinking about this thread.Sure his mane is awesome so why on earth would one even entertain cutting it short?Oh well maybe some people just like to be reaffirmed or something.Cheers
Mârk
I don't understand how you could thing of cutting even an inch off that magnificent mane. If you're taking a survey, my vote would most definitely be to continue to let it grow.
Why that makes no sense, stay as you are of grow longer but no magical reason why you should cut simply because you are at this length.
