Hey guys, how've you all been?
I need some advice. As some of you know i've been growing hair from a #1 buzz and i'm currently at about 8.5 months. I haven't had a single trim so i obviously have a sort of mullet going on. So my friend was telling me the other day that i should trim my hair so that it'll grow out and shape itself nicely, and that if i didn't now i would have to later down the road. I really don't wanna even trim my hair, but if i don't will i have to cut it even more when it's longer? Should i have it trimmed now or wait a bit, say till my 1 year mark? Or is it possible that i won't have to trim it at all? I'm kinda stuck, so can you more experienced longhairs help me out?
Ps: my hair on the back is reaching the very top of my spine and my bangs have already reached my eyes.
Hugo,
I don't think you need to trim it unless you are looking for a certain style. My son has hair similar to yours and it is at about 2 years since his buzz cut, it has varied lengths, but it looks great - it lays great - no need to cut it or trim it - and it won't make it grow any faster by trimming -
I am at about a year and I have not trimmed my hair either, but mine is a lot thinner and more fine - I am an old man - but my hair looks fine like this.
I've read here that the longer it grows, it just takes on a V-shape and it looks good -
Hang in there - you've got beautiful hair.

Hi Hugo,
It all depends if you want to achieve length faster or have it look "good" along the way. The mullet thing comes from the way the hair naturally grows out. The hairs are different lengths and make it appear like that. If you keep trimming it even, then you will sacrifice length. Of course, this makes it take longer to gain length. If you just let it grow, then you will gain length faster. Yes, it will have the mullet look. But that will not last forever. People who have longer hair with a V shape at the ends would look like they have a mullet if their hair was a lot shorter.
What I would do is let it grow with no trimming at all until it gets about 4 inches past your goal. Then, I would trim it even back to your goal length. But, if you let Mother Nature take care of it, I think you won't want to trim at all. You have excellent hair to work with and I wouldn't cut any of it. I would highly recommend you check out Justin's Youtube videos. His username is Musique3579. I have been watching his videos lately. He has great information and you would enjoy them.
Please keep us updated and keep it growing and flowing! Hope this helps.

Men growing long hair part 1
Though I am not currently a long hair, I would say, nature always knows best, let the earth mold you.
Hi Hugo = 1stly: Mullets rule OK !!! - 2ndly: I rocked a mullet for the 1st 2 years of my 4.5 year longhair journey - & I now have hair near my waist: ( albeit slightly layered due to the mullet - the layers are barely detectable now ) - my advice is DO NOT CUT/TRIM = ur hair will grow beautifully into a slightly layered mane that swishes in da wind ... cheers CEM. :))
I think everyone else covered this mostly, but figure Ill give my two cents. You don't have trim if you don't want to, I will just give your hair a different shape. Depending on the style you want you may want to or not. I haven't trimmed mine much other than to make sure its healthy.
What you're going through is the awkward stage. Don't trim your hair. There is essentially no way to trim your hair during the awkward stage that doesn't involve your hair going back to exactly how it is now in a month or two, which starts a vicious cycle of trims and keeps you stuck in the awkward stage. The awkward stage sucks, but it's something we all have to go through when growing our hair. A rite of passage, if you will.
Onward and downward!
Hey Hugo!
I'm actually going to play the devils advocate here, and advise you to do the opposite of what everybody else is saying ;)
If you do care about the way your hair looks NOW, and still want to get to long hair while avoiding that mullett look, the way to do it would be to trim, the backside of your head (bottom hairline), until the hair fartherst along from your neck (the one on the top of your head/over your forhead) would reach all the way back, or at least down to your jawline.
That is what I am planning on doing this time around, and once it's all one length, just let it grow and flow freely.
It won't really prolong your hair journey, but rather let that hair catch up with the back side hair, that's all :)
Thanks for the replies everyone!! As most of you guys suggested, i'll just let it grow without trimming to see how it turns out.
