I've been seriously thinking about cutting my waist-length hair back to where it hits just at the bottom of the shoulder blades for a few months now. My question is, how do I do it? Do I just go to a stylist and say I want it trimmed like that? I can't think of anybody that I trust well enough to let them do it.
Is there any way to do it at home? I just want a straight hem at the bottom of the shoulders.
Thanks.
Steve
Why would you want to do that to such beautiful hair?
It would be such a shame to do that with such great looking hair.
Now that having been said ultimately it is your hair and
you're free to do what you want but I would be very dissappointed if you did cut it.
As far as your question, I have not found anyone I trust to
trim my long hair. There was one I trusted back in the 1990s
but that shop went out of business. I tried some other places
and none of them did what I wanted. So in the intervening years
i've trimmed it myself.
I've never understood how hair stylists can get away with this.
It would be like if you hired someone to paint your house a light
blue and the painter said "No, your house is going to be a dark red." Or it would be like going to buy a grey Jeep and the dealer said "no you're going to buy a white Cadlillac." You wouldn't tolerate that so why would you tolerate that with hair.
I've had instances where I gave the stylist exact instructions
on what I wanted done down and they still do what they wanted not what I (the customer) wanted.
Hi Steve,
Although I haven't been to a professional hair stylist myself in quite awhile, this is how I've approached such in the past:
1) if possible, find out if there is any stylist who specializes in long hair (they do exist, but prepare yourself for them being quite a bit more expensive than the regular hair stylists);
2) ask around -- if no local longhaired men you feel comfortable approaching in your town or city, then maybe a longhaired female might point you in the right direction...
3) I always recommend you ask for LESS amount of hair cut off than you would like -- you can always come back another day to have more inches taken off; but you definitely can't glue it back on once it's gone!
4) Pay for the best stylist you can find, even if it means having to drive some extra distance -- and don't forget to tip generously if you like the result!
On the other hand, if you decide to trim your hair yourself, see if you can find the self-trimming advise on the Long Hair Community (the women's equivalent to MLHH) -- I think her name id Fay who has some step-b-step photos of how to do this (Jason, DavidN, or Trolleypup might know what I'm talking about, as they are members of that website community)...
I hope the above info is helpful to you!

If you just want a straight-across cut, that's pretty simple to have someone else do. My wife was never trained to cut hair but she's done a good job doing similar trims for me. Just say where you want it cut and have your wife cut it straight across after you have thoroughly brushed it out.
Hi Steve,
Everybody has already given you excellent advice here. But I just hope you don't cut it too short! Of course, you have to do what you want to do though. I definitely would make sure you use a very trusted stylist or friend! Please let us see pics of the new length my friend!
