Long haired Theologian
Cool video! Thanks for posting this Marco. Thought he wouldn't be "marketable" with long hair. I think there is way too much "marketing" in theology as it is!
peace,

This is a great video - what a cool guy... I can relate to his situation - I went to a Christian college in the 70s and had to keep my hair shorter than collar length. My son went to a Christian school in the 90s and was a rebellious son of a - well, son of me! He now has longer hair for quite some time - and I am in the process of growing mine out at this ripe age of 57. I always went along with the status quo and never understood why long hair was considered a bad thing for men - especially when most artist's drawings and paintings of Biblical characters show these guys with long hair - including Jesus, Himself...
So bravo! to all of us brave guys who are living their lives according to their individual convictions & not conforming to the world.
Well stated.... I always admired longhairs, even though some taught me otherwise... well, I attended "Christian Rock" festivals in the 90s....
then you see that it can be accepted.....

Although I understand your associating religious vocations with 'conformity,' I actually find more than a bit of non-conformity among my colleagues in the clergy. Besides me (a rabbi) we have a Catholic priest here on MLHH. Maybe there are more out there?
Another thing, long hair has long been associated with holiness. Think Nazarites, like the biblical Samson. I've seen many a clergyman with flowing locks, although to be sure, the majority are coiffed much more 'conventionally.'
Very interesting...... thanx for posting!
Keep growin!

I think what I see is American conservativism amongst some Christian groups - I am glad to hear that you see it differently. I find it interesting. Hey, I'd like that priest to reveal himself and share a bit how it is for him to have long hair in his profession - and tell us where he serves?
I'll wait for my colleague here on MLHH to 'out' himself. :-)
Point taken that among certain Christian groups, especially the Evangelicals, there is a conservative mindset and not much of the non-conformity that might manifest itself by male clergy wearing (gasp!) long hair. I have occasionally seen longhairs among such clergy, but usually they're working in outreach, especially to youth, and not in conventional pulpit positions. You do sometimes see them teaching in the seminaries, usually in disciplines such as Semitics where such seminaries don't have a lot of scholars to choose from since they apply tests of faith to potential teachers.
Among the Mainline Protestants, the Catholics, and the non-Orthodox Jews there is, I think, more visible non-conformity. Among these groups I have seen male clergy, especially older men, sporting flowing locks. There, the only 'non-conformity' not allowed in such circles, is Conservative political views! :-)
AWESOME!!!!
He sounds like a man of great conviction, and certainly very articulate, as well as sticks with his commitments (including to keeping his long hair)!
Thanks for sharing this!

Thanx for posting!

His hair is classic length, unusual for longhaired guys. It is really thick too.

Thanks for finding this. He is very articulate, has that southern manner that I have always found charming, and of course that great hair.
