I took a DART bus to do some shopping, and my driver happened to be a middle-aged guy with long greying hair styled in a single braid. We struck up a small conversation; he started growing his hair about 10 years ago, as he wasn't able to do so earlier due to employment, and has been working for DART about that long. He said he needed help to do the braid, he's all fumble fingers. He keeps his hair to mid-back length.
I do see the occasional university student with long hair, but most have short hair. Once saw a guy ahead of me with dreadlocks pulled in a tail, extending to the back of his knees. That's the longest I ever saw. Otherwise, Newark, Delaware is a sea of crew cuts and buzz cuts. There is a young man who works at the neighborhood Walgreens with long hair in a ponytail that I see some times. Seems that chain drug-stores are a place for long-haired males to seek employment.
I'm going to physical therapy following my shoulder surgery, and saw a young man with shoulder-length hair come in for treatment. And on one of my forages into town, saw an elderly man with white hair and a slightly receding hairline and matching beard, with his hair in a low ponytail. If I'm lucky, I might see one guy with long hair when I go out. Back in the 70's, long-haired men were everywhere.
Yes, long hair on men is largely 'out of fashion' these days in the USA. I see more long haired men here in Oz, especially young men with the 'surfer' look. But Baby Boomers like myself, also, though not many. And for those who don't wear the hair long, the buzz is definitely 'king.' Oy, such a waste!
Carol,
Long haired guys always catch my attention, too. I am just one year into growing my own long so I still feel like i am not a member of that illustrious club - but, as it gets longer, i will feel more inclined to speak to some of these guys - so far, though, I just look and take note of what I see... in central New York state it seems to be more common - but then again, maybe it's just that I notice more.

Yes, you would think that a college town would have more longhairs than you see these days. I suppose it's whatever is in for that age group. I live relatively close to the University of Cincinnati and don't see all that many longhairs in the college-age group. What I do see more of though are guys who are 30 or older sporting long hair, several in my immediate neighborhood. It's kind of an "alternative" neighborhood, though, i.e. you'll see more full-sleeve tattoos than you will long haired guys.

Totally agree with you. I have a friend who works in a California Wal Mart. He not only has super long hair, but also has blue hair!
