I see a lot of people around Oakland and San Francisco with their hair styled like this. Shaved on the sides and a braid in the back. I think this hairstyle is cool and good looking, I wanted to discover if it had a name or if anyone knows about it or does their hair like this?
Thanks!
It's an undercut - and looks dreadful. Not easy to revert to proper long hair if you don't like it/get fed up with it.
Really defeats the ob ject of having long hair in the first place.
L Re: It's called DISGUSTING- Dont do it :( (n/t)
Isn't that a bit harsh? I would not wear one but
ultamately if it is your hair and you want to wesr
one that is absolutely within your right.
when those of us with long hair started growing our
hair in 1964 after the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan,
we fought the establshment for many years for the right
to wear our hair as we want. That includes the right
to wear it short/long/bald/with an undercut/etc.
Of course everyone is entitled to wear their hair the way they want, the same way I am entitled to give my opinion on certain hair styles.
Just like the "Mullet" this undercut hairstyle is a big NO for guys with long hair. Of course it's a super practical style because it seems like more comfortable, but whats the point on growing hair long if you're gonna shave off the lower part then?
Also, just like Damon said, there is no way back to "normal" long hair. So spending so much time on growing hair to shave it off does not make any sense to me.
Absolutely.
I would not wear a mullet, but where I had long hair in the 80s when the Mullet craze was big, I wasn't one of those complaining
about friends with Mullets.
Of course if you have an undercut it is possible with a boat load of patience to grow it out long again. It would be no different than growing your hair out from a buzz cut. Yes some of it would be longer than other parts but, heck it comes with
territory when you have an undercut.
I would like to think that all long haired men would be
tolerant of others no matter how they chose to wear their
hair, be it short, long, or anything in between.
And before you slam an undercut as disgusting may I remind that
there was a time in shortly after 1964 that the "Beatles" haircut
was also considered disgusting. Throughout the 60s and 70s there were those who considered any long hair to be disgusting.
Tolerance for various hair styles. It's something I learned the hard way throughout 49 years as a long hair.
You are quite right. People are entitled to their opinions but
they should consider carefully when their opinion denigrates
other people. It would be rather hypocritical of us, after
insisting on the freedom to have long hair, to be intolerant
of other hair styles.
No one is denigrating any one . I just said " That hair cut is disgusting ". And I still think it is.
It would be different if I had said " YOU are disgusting for getting that hair cut ". I never addressed to him, I just addressed to the hair cut itself .
I agree. You gave your opinion on the hairstyle, not the person.
The whole point of a discussion board on hair is to discuss hair - and that surely includes giving our personal opinion on a hairstyle even if the original post was on a tangential issue. I am certain that if someone posted a question along the lines of "I like shaved heads; what's it called when you shave your head completely except for a spiked strip down the centre?", the members here would reply that it was called a 'mohawk' or 'mohican' and many would add their opinion on whether they liked the hairstyle or not.
Nothing wrong with that. We all know that it is only a personal opinion and the poster can cut their hair any way they want. If members only gave their opinion if it was positive but were afraid to state their opinion if it was negative, it wouldn't be much of a *discussion* board! The whole point of a discussion board is to interact as HUMAN BEINGS openly and frankly, not merely dispense encyclopedic answers like a machine. :)

The moderation crew had a discussion about this several years ago, back when I was on the crew. The decision was that we really want the honest opinions of others. It was felt that that was one of the major purposes of the board.
Negative criticism (often euphemistically called "constructive" criticism) is only valuable, though, if it comes from someone who has a solid reputation here, i.e., a regular user. If such criticism comes from an unknown person, it comes off as a troll post.
The same logic was applied to off topic posts. We have to go off topic to get to know one another and explore our common longhair culture. Off topic posts from unknowns, though, are taken as troll posts.
This discussion resulted in items 18 and 19 in the General FAQ,

Sounds like we are splitting hairs here. Just to keep it on the
topic of hair!
1- Even now I consider the Beatles haircut as disgusting. I never liked it.
2- I dont give a fck if people think long hair is disgusting. The same way I dont think the owner of this topic gives a fck if I said its disgusting. He will probably get it done anyway.
I dont understand why you make a big deal about someone's opinion. Its just an opinion. I am not even saying that I am right on my opinion, because it is just a personal opinion.
Its like saying " I find chocolate ice cream disgusting " or " I hate country music". I dont know. Its just MY opinion and does not mean that its the truth nor that I want to be right .
I think you're getting me confused with another MLHH member who posts as 'UK'. I post with the username 'Damon UK'. ;)
However, I totally agree with both you and 'UK': I think it's an extremely ugly hairstyle and it's difficult to revert to normal long hair. But I also agree with LHIA; whether that hairstyle is ugly or not is only my personal opinion and I completely support the right of anyone to style their own hair any way they want (so long as it's not faded with swastikas or other offensive symbols).

You're right!
I tend to get confused with you guys because you both are from the UK.
I like the style. I don't think I'd ever get mine cut that way, but more power to those who do. Its their hair, after all.
Chinese men in Qing Dynasty wore their hair like that
History lesson:
monks had their full heads shaved
The han ethnicity did the topknot
The manchus shaved their foreheads (and the back would be akin to a large rat tail)
The mongols shaved the front, save for a fringe, and the back would be made into two braids
northern tribes shaved most of the hair except for one or more long braids
others would wear it loose or simply tied back
people didnt cut their hair short in east asia until the 19c
As the others have said its called an undercut and I have one and
have had it this way for some time. I actually enjoy my long
hair more with the undercut because I don't have all the
annoying frizzy hair of various lengths around the edges that
used to bug me.
There are several here who will sneer at this style so I'm a
small minority within a minority of men with long hair. This
is one of those rare occasions that I totally agree with LHIA!
The only difference from the picture you posted is that I rarely
have a braid, usually just a simple ponytail.
