Just a quick update on my quest to establish waist-length hair. My hair is wavy and the last time I posted it was hard to tell where my hair truly came to on my back because of that. Most people pull their hair straight when they measure so its a more accurate representation of ones true length. I think the place where my hair reaches by my fingers is waist, at least according to my estimation. I know the definition of waist is somewhat nebulous.
I did a bit of S & D last month and should find the time to do it again. So far Im holding off on an actual trim. Its full speed ahead to determine my actual terminal length!
Looking good. I hope your "terminal length" is a long, long way off.
Thanks, me too! Perceived growth has slowed a lot so I fear I'm quite close to terminal but we'll see.
Hello Jason,
It sure does look very close if not waist length my friend! I always enjoy your pic postings because of the inspiration factor! Your hair is just wonderful in all aspects!
I do wish you Godspeed in attaining even greater lengths! I am going to post an update pic on January 1. And then it's also going to be full speed ahead to waist length! Right now I am just trying to get all the length to hang nicely below the shoulders! Frustrating at times I tell you! You didn't happen to go through that, did you?:) Onward and downward!
Ted
Hey Ted,
Thanks, I'm glad the photos can serve as inspiration to you.
I definitely went through a stage where the hair would constantly fall in front of my shoulders rather than behind. Eventually you do get past that and the hair will tend to stay behind you more.
Looking forward to your next update.
Jason
Let me add, Ted, that a man's head does not come out of the top of his shoulders. It comes out a bit in front of that. Examine the head hole in a T-shirt. Shirt makers aim for the most common spot for a head to stick through. How forward a man's head is in relation to his shoulders varies a bit from one man to the next. This will affect how a man's hair divides when it reaches his shoulders. As your hair gets longer, you will have better success in getting it to go where you want, but not entirely. If disturbed enough by wind or physical activity, your hair will try to get back to where it wants.
The same can be said about parts. The heavier a man's mane is, the more insistent it will be that it be parted in the middle.
Bill
Jason,
Yes, I am definitely inspired by your hair! It is good to know this too shall pass!
Bill,
Thanks for your information! Totally makes sense to me! Sometimes I think we worry about things we either can't change or will change themselves! Have to just let it grow and find out! Pretty sure everything will be fine!
Ted
Jason, as always your hair looks awesome. I would have to say that you are just about waist length and still have some growing to do before reaching terminal length.
Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Karsten
Thanks Karsten! Happy holidays to you as well. Your continuing progression is an inspiration to me and I'm sure other long-time growers. Your mane continues to gradually lengthen and you maintain such a nice hemline too with your regular trims.
I think of the waist as between the hipbone and the lowest rib. On that definition it definitely looks waist-length.
I've probably said it before, but man, the color of your hair is really cool. (Well, warm actually but you know what I mean :)
Chris
Thanks Chris. My hair color is different in various lights. When I take photos outdoors with overcast skies like in this picture, it brings out more red.
Does it hit your belly button on the front?
I don't measure in front because the hair has farther to travel.
If you read a post below by Dave_AR he believes that trims are
never necessary, that there are now products to repair any type
of damage your hair may have. With knowledge like that you
should be able to get to where your waist really is fairly soon.
Keratin definitely sounds interesting though snipping just the very ends of certain hairs probably wouldn't slow a person's growth rate down much.
Oh, do you know where waist length "really" is as against all the other opinions out there?
No. I know that there's a lot of difference of opinion about
where a person's waist really is. I just made that comment
because it seems like your waist is kind of high in that
picture. Your hair is excellent but with maybe 4 more inches
it would cover all definitions of where your waist is.
That comment was made in jest more than anything.
Hi Jason,
Cheers to you on continuing to achieve more and more length, and it's great to know that your hair care regime is working so well. It does appear that you are at, or very near to waist length, and I look forward to your continued progress in the upcoming months.
Also, at this time I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas season and all the best in 2014.
Take care,
David
Hi David,
Thanks! It's kind of fun for us longterm growers to have some kind of goal to still shoot for.
Happy Holidays to you and yours as well!
Take care my friend,
Jason
Jason,
It's always great to see an update from you. You've got beautiful hair - congratulations on the length you've achieved.
Gary
Hi Gary,
Thanks, I'm glad you're not sick of my updates! :)
Jason
Looks good, Jason. Hey, your hair always looks good!
Glad to see you're happy because you're getting more length.
Bill
Thanks Bill! You've been there from the very beginning of my journey. It's nice to think there's at least a little bit more potential for further growth but if my journey now involves maintaining, well, that's great too!
The pinnacle of achievement for any longhair is to reach his terminal length. There can be great pleasure in often asking the question, "Daddy, are we there yet?" and finally one day hearing the answer is "Yes!"
Bill
Hi Jason,
As always your hair looks fantastic in both length, density and color.I see nothing to complain about in all three of those aspects:)Hopefully you can achieve additional length but if not you still have an epic mane my friend.Merry Christmas to you and your family.Cheers
Mârk
Hi Mark,
Thanks! That's how I'm trying to look at it as well. It's interesting how sometimes manes stall for a long time and then gradually lengthen. We'll see what happens.
Happy Holidays to you as well!
Jason
It does look like waist length to me or at least very close to it. Your hair surely doesn't give off the impression that it needs a trim and I hope that it remains like that on your terminal length journey.
Thanks! There's definitely some wear and tear on the last few inches but hopefully the S & D will be enough.
Yeah, I'd say he's past the point where, to achieve waist length, he has to tilt back his head and pull up his pants. [wink]
Bill
Hairs looking in good shape and so long now, Jason! Can't wait to get to this length as well. :D Have a great Christmas brother!
Hey, thanks Mark! Your hair is so healthy now. It's going to look amazing at longer lengths. Happy Holidays to you and your family as well!
Hi Jason,
Looking good and I do believe your ends have thickened up a bit with the added care you have been giving them. I'm at a similar stage where I cut off around 8 inches of thin ends last February and when my hair is stretched it is now definately waist length but being curly springs back up about 5 inches. I now going to do what you want to do and that is grow my hair to waist or belt length terminal. I have been wearing my hair up more often on hot sunny days under a hat but wanted to know are the name of those special bandana hats or skull cap things that some guys here use for long hair so you can wear it up in an updo when doing physical activities without looking weird? I wanted something to hide my hair up to protect it from rays of sunshine.
Cheers,
Duncan
You've got the right name for them. Google "bandana skull cap" and you'll find lots! That will get you the ones that look like bandanas or are made by tying one. "Skull cap" is more general, and it will get you those that are on average not as colorful. "Do rag" will get you a similar list of sites, and will also return sites that have spelled it "doo rag" or "du rag" because Google is wise to various spellings. (Do rag is a ghetto term, that comes from that it is a rag for your hairdo. Thus, it is pronounced "doo", not "doh".)
Bill
Hi Duncan,
Thanks! I have continued with regular oiling, both coconut and ojon, but I admit that my hair still takes quite a bit of abuse. I'm still cycling outside in the winter and sub-freezing rides no doubt are harsh on my hair. At least it's braided for most activities.
That's cool you're also going for terminal. I suspect you have a long way to go. Would love to see an update from you!
Best,
Jason
Hi Jason,
I am looking to get back into physical fitness again but wanted to get some kind of skull cap to protect my fragile fine hair which unfortunately has the tendency to dry out on the ends and break off. I figured keeping it under a skull cap would help improve the chances of it reaching a longer length. I will probably do another update around February which is every 12 months.
Cheers,
Duncan
(living through yet another hot sweltering Aussie summer1)
Your hair is looking really cool, and I wish you continued
success... All of you longtimers have been an inspiration for me,
(I would like to get there before I'm totally bald)....
Keep growin... Merry Christmas!
The Spaf Man!
Thanks! I look forward to following your journey as well.
Lookin' good there, Jason!! I'd say you are for sure going full speed ahead!!!
Rest assured that definitely it's been a satisfying experience for me to achieve terminal length, even if someday I decide to trim it back by a few inches shorter -- I go back & forth on that issue. So I can only imagine that you will also enjoy the same. There's something about going for terminal length that seems to feel like an inner peace about it all (I don't know how to exactly put it into words; but I'm sure you understand what I'm trying to say).... Happy growing!
And also before I forget to say it: Merry Christmas!
- Ken
Thanks Ken!
I think growing to terminal is an experience many longhairs want to achieve. It's kind of a rite of passage in a way. It's part curiosity and part enjoying the greater length. Your continued growth has been an inspiration.
Happy Holidays to you!
Jason
