I'll try to supply pictures soon--at least a recent one. I've never had my hair long in my adult life. The last time I had anything near long hair was in 1996, when I had a mullet, at age 5. My question is: I haven't had a haircut in three months, and in the back, the hair is starting to flip up and curl upwards on the ends.
I'm wondering, does anyone else have this sort of hair texture--where in the beginning of growth it curled up in the back--if so, will it continue to curl upward or as it grows will it look ok? I'm just worried about it just curling up and being unruly.
I've supplied two pics of me from 1996 when I had the mullet and you can see the flip I'm talking about:

Just about everyone's hair curls up at the shoulders during the awkward stage. The only way to know what kind of hair you'll have it to stick through it and see what your hair becomes. It's part of the fun of first growing out your hair!

I don't think what you're describing has anything to do with hair texture, it sounds more like hair TYPE.
Now to answer your question.
What you're describing is nothing to worry about. In fact, probably everyone on this board has gone through this at least once.
It is just your hair reacting to coming in contact with your neck, and is absolutely temporary. Once your hair gets long enough, it will start weighing itself down, and will no longer be able to curl up like that.
Unfortunately, your hair is going to get a lot more unruly before it starts getting less unruly.
How long this period last depends on several factors, one of which is hair type. Judging from what little I can see of your hair in the pictures you provided, I'd say your hair is strait, maybe a little wavy, so it should be able to grow passed this stage relatively fast.
I say relatively because, depending the person, this "unruly" stage alone, could last anywhere from a few months to a several years.
Now my hair is very wavy to curly, so I cant even guess how long it will take you to grow passed this. I'll leave that to the far more experienced & more strait-haired members.
But I hope that you found the information I was able to give you useful & wish you the best of luck on your hair growing journey.
Remember, no matter how unruly or frustrating your hair becomes in the coming months, it's only temporary, and will be well worth in in the end.

Thank you. Hmm. My hair is wavier now than there. It curls in the front. At one point, back around 2007 , I had the then popular Emo fringe, but my hair was relatively short except in the front. The bangs, as they got to past eye length, had ringlets on the ends. And I know on top when grown a bit, the hair on top gets 'bushy', fluffy and big. Can't explain it exactly. But I thank you again.
Hi Mr. Hair,
In the picture your hair does not appear curly or wavy. If you are getting ringlets then it is very possible your hair type has changed. This can happen. If this is the case, then maybe you will only have curls at the very ends of your hair no matter how long you grow it.
If you have a mullet, then you will only see the curls at the bottom in the back. The front is too short to show the curls in a mullet. As far as the top becoming "big" or "fluffy", that would probably be reduced with added length. But then again, if you have a mullet, this would be avoided except in the back where you would notice it.
But the only way to truly find out what your hair will do is to just let it all grow out. Then you will know exactly what type of hair you have. I would think you should grow all of your hair to at least mid-back length to discover the true type. Between shoulder and mid-back length you could see drastic changes in texture. I had the same "flip" at shoulder that you are describing. I am seeing my hair fall gracefully around my shoulders now. I am definitely pleased with the results so far. But I will tell you I wasn't always happy with my hair along the way! Remember they say patience is a virtue! Hope this helps.

Funny you mention the change from shoulder to mid back length. My dad had shoulder length hair at age 41 in 95. Ar shoulder length, the hair had a full texture, with a slight wave towards the ends. Years later at age 54 he had it chest length and it seemed much thinner in texture, no hair loss but the overall look was less full, and there was no wave on the ends. I think rather than a mullet I might grow my hair to just beneath my shoulders all around, as you said even just to see how it all comes out. Thank you foe the inspiration.
Just make sure you grow your hair in the style that YOU want. YOU are the only one that matters! Remember those who matter don't mind. And those who mind don't matter. Enough said. Onward and downward my friend!

Splendid brick wall.
This is something to be expected and is normal.
Just let it grow and you will find that in the end with enough length that it will even-itself out very well.
Best of luck to you this time around.
