i'm going through another one of those weekends where i'm seriously thinking about getting my hair cut due to all of the bullshit associated with having long hair. you know...pressures at work, the fact that i'm almost 36 now and being told that my hair style is "dated". seems alot of chicks shy away because of the so called "image" long haired guys represent. anybody out there have some opinions?
Yeah, I have an opinion. So what if you're dated. So what if you're getting flack from work (unless they threaten you with your job if you don't cut it), and so what if girls shy away. You like your hair, don't you? So, why do you care? I've had long hair for years now. Not once have I ever felt compelled to cut it. I know who I am, and what I like about me; and, more importantly, how I want to express myself. No one else has to live your life. That's YOUR responsibility, so just blow 'em off.
It sounds to me like you're suffering from a bout of low self-esteem, and are feeling the need to conform to how everyone else expects you to look around them before they're willing to accept you. Chin up, and keep in mind that most of the general public has become so obsessed with what outward appearance, what's acceptable and what's not, that their minds have become starved and, as a result, they've lost some sense of themselves. People conform, and they expect everyone else to do the same. Independent thought and self expression are no-no's. How dare we think for even a minute that we matter only to ourselves.
Below is a link to a poem of mine that might be of help to you and anyone who feels the way you're feeling right now.
Long hair is "In" right now. Just look in the current Esquire magazine at some of the ads.
Maybe an updated style is in order?
OM's reply below:
Whether we like or dislike long hair on males or females should not be periodic "learned responses" from what the fashion "authorities" dictate as to what is "in". I have ALWAYs liked the 1940's-50's long hair styles on women, and the 1930's-40's elegantly coiffed movie long hair styles on men in period and costume productions, and these styles are not currently "in". But when I attend to my own innate likes, then, from my own honest perspective, these are very pleasing styles.
OM.
I tend to think you might want to think about this before cutting. Sure, perhaps an updated style, perhaps a trim, but a REAL cut, can't be taken back to Walmart! Think long and hard before you cut. . .unless your hair grows a couple of inches a month!
People are gonna say what they're gonna say. And if you cut your hair now they will come up with something else to bug you about. And eventually you won't even know who you are or what you're all about.
If you really want a hair cut, make sure you think this way without interruption for at least two weeks. Then start looking at other styles. If you really WANT short hair, then fine. But don't do it to please other people. Are they doing what you want in order to please you? Doubt it.

If YOU want to change your hair, there are alternatives to cutting it. Maybe changing the hairstyle or changing the type of clothing would make your hair look more like YOU want it to look. If other don't like it that's their problem.
My response is to the fact that there are just as many (or more) chicks who LOVE longhairs..
