Here's a new precaution we folk who value our hair should be aware of:
Berkeley Swimming Pool Melts and Discolors Hair
That's quite terrible, though most pools aren't as poorly maintained as that. Either way I have a strong aversion to any pool that is used by a large number of people as you have no idea what's in it, some little kiddies could have thought it was a perfect place to take a leak, and they often do lol.
I have noticed a few other things related to swimming. I notice that when I swim at the beach my hair always feels very sandpapery/grippy when You try and run your hand through it and it always takes several washes to get it back feeling good again. And just a curiosity I've also noticed on my mum who has thin hair that regular swimming (pool or ocean) causes her hair to lighten from brown to a darkish blond. Has anyone else noticed anything like this with thier own hair?
I never use public pools, you don't know what is in that water.
I've seen surveys where a high number of folks admit to
peeing in the pool. (Something like 65% of them admit to doing
it at some point).
Plus you don't know what other chemicals are in there. Perfume,
skin lotion, etc.
I've always wondered, a woman uses Nair on her legs in the morning then swims in the pool. Could that Nair effect
my hair if I go swimming that morning?
Plus you don't know what some kids will put in the water as a practical joke. Ex lax for example.
I've heard of alot of adults who do it too.
(Think about it, how many adults are too
lazy to get out of the pool, dry off, walk all the way to
the nearest bathroom?)

My hair is thin = I have a pool. In the summer my reddish hair turns blond on top.

Our well water has a moderate iron content that does slightly darken my hair color to rust, or an orange brown after a shower. A heavy iron content in the well water will turn your hair color to rust. In addition to staining faucets and shower tiles. A water filter is in order. But no water bills. About $5.00 a month to PGE to pump it.
