Hey guys,
On the 22nd it'll have been 10 months since my last haircut. I had previously set my mind on 12 months with no cuts but i think i'm going to grow it out for another 12 months!
Quick question, i don't know if it's noticeable in the picture but my hair curls up at the end all around my head. Will this eventually stop?
Another question, i have thick hair and it gets greasy and dirty very quickly, could it be due to how i condition it? How do you guys, who have hair similar to mine, deal with this?
It is truly amazing to see what can be grown in a span of only 10 months starting with a Buzz Cut. Those 1/2 inches per month really add-up big time.
Yes, it will stop. The hair is still too short at this point for length + gravity to do its thing.
No doubt you have oily skin? I sure did and while the hair was short (meaning even at the length you have now) shampoo and conditioner was needed daily, at least in my case. Funny thing, but after the hair gets to mid-back and further, less washings were needed with the average ending up at well below waist length at only once per week. (Hair wash day every Thurs.) Heck if I can remember why I picked Thursday. LOL
As for the "thick hair," I have heard this statement so many times for years from guys first growing out their hair. Unfortunately, some have their hair thinned-out and when longer it no longer looks full enough and is suddenly stringy looking. This drove them to either cut it all off and start again or quit altogether. I feel confident that once your hair is at mid-back all will blend in beautifully with a nice full look.
You are off to a great start. Congratulations! :-)

It was surprising to me when I transitioned from short hair, which had to be washed daily, to long hair, which has to be washed once or twice a week. The longer hair absorbs the scalp oils better - it actually needs the oil, to keep from drying out.
Agreed, you're off to a great start...keep it growing and flowing!

Looks like a cool hairstyle you have going there. I wouldn't
worry about the curling, more length should cure that.
Congratulations, you're doing well.
Don't worry about the curling, you are in the awkward stage but a couple more months or so and the extra weight will take care of that and it will lie flat. WE all went through something similar.
The greasiness is natural, I doubt that it is anything you are doing, carry on growing and see how it develops - how often are you washing?
Looks good! What a difference six weeks can make (since you last posted an update).
I have the end-flips too. In my experience, brushing the hair out makes them flip more, so I avoid that, just combing or even finger-combing. For what its worth, the curls at the end of your hair follow a regular pattern around your head and (IMO) don't look bad.

That looks really good, Hugo! Loving that color :)
I would take everybody's advice here, and not stress out about the tiny curling at the tips, not the oily scalp, all natural and will get sorted out by the longer hair!
Hey Hugo, my hair looks to be similar to yours and I do have the same curling and greasy problems. I think I've started to realize that having it appear greasy in part for me is just the fact that when it was short I always associated "clean" being right after the shower because I would wash it every day. Now I only wash twice a week and the natural oils are there in between, but if you think about it most other long haired women and men have oil in their hair. It's taken me some time to get over the "its dirty and greasy" thought process, and i'm quite there yet myself.
My hair tends to get greasiest just above my forehead going around the crown of my head, also the front hairs that touch my face tend to get pretty greasy. I've found using a boar's hair brush helps spread that oil down to the full length of the hairs makes it overall look less greasy. I have been experimenting with rinsing my hair in the shower in between washes as well, as that seems to spread the oils around instead of having them congregate on the crown of my head.
Overall I think it looks great for 10 months! You'll definitely want to go another year to fully get out of that awkward stage!

Hi Hugo, you are doing really great...
Thanks for posting, and just keep growing! I have thinner hair, but I am also working out how often to wash, I trying for every 3rd day.... I don't want to dry it out, but I don't want it too oily...
Take Care..The Spaf Man
Hi Hugo,
Wow, what a great update pic my friend! I would definitely grow for another 12 months! I would not worry about the curling at the ends. This is just normal growing out stuff. Your hair is filling in the layers you had before. Eventually everything will probably get more even looking. You might get a "V" shape to the ends in the back. But this can be trimmed even if you want. I may have to do this myself. I have a deep "V" which I am not crazy about. But I hate to lose length.
As far as the greasiness, it may have to do with over conditioning. You could try to only apply conditioner to the very ends. Only use shampoo on the scalp. Also, try not to wash too often. Other than that, just let it grow! Hope this helps!

Hugo, you may just have to wash your hair more often. My hair looks gross after just one day of not washing it... I still wash my hair almost every day even though it is getting longer now. I just don't like how I look without doing this...
It's not the same process for everyone. Do what makes you feel good about the way you look.
Maybe less is more, my hair used to be very oily but instead of washing it everthird day I washed it once a weak, it got worse but after a couple of weeks my scalp realized somehow that I stopped washing all the oil out and now I can go a week without washing.
Hey guys,
Thank you all for the feedback. I've read every single one of the replies and all of you are telling me not to worry about the curls so i won't sweat over that. I'm also going to try a new washing method to try to see change. I think i'll post another update in about 3-4 months to give it time to get a little bigger.
