Well I finally did it.........
I broke down over the weekend and bought a kilt
at a regional science fiction convention.
Now at science fiction conventions it's very
common to see guys with long hair and wearing
kilts.
So where do guys on this site wear them?
Do you wear your hair down/braided/in a bun/pony tailed/
pig tailed?
What do you wear for shoes? socks?
What do you wear fro a shirt?
Do you ear underwear or something else under the kilt?
And where do you wear the kilt? (only at science fiction
conventions? only at home? only at work? do you wear them
everywhere?)
Unfortunetly I was too busy working the convention to take time
to notice how guys wear their kilts.
Just wondering, which con you were at?
Which sci-fi shows were represented?
(by the way, Kligons usually have long hair - had to throw that in!)
Arisia
It covers all aspects of science fiction.
Guests are usually writers, artists, etc.
Ok, I hope you had fun, I am planning to go to the Star Trek con in Cherry Hill NJ in April..
Take Care, Keep Growin' and Flowin'!
The Spaf Man
I did have fun. I've been attending and working on these conventions for more than 30 years.
This con is not just Star Trek, covers all aspects of science
fiction (books, media, etc.) Includes Trek, Star Wars, B5, etc.
Also includes costumes, Anime, Cosplay, etc.
The best cons to attend are fan run conventions. Too many cons are run by folks who are only in the business for the money.
A good fan run convention will be run as a 501(c)3 non profit.
Having a good dealers room, a good art room, filing, programming
are fine but too many people run cons only to get people into
a dealers room (and make money).
(BTW, i'm not a fan of the folks running the Cherry Hill Con.

They are only in it to make money, it is not a fan run convention. They have some great guests but they treat their
guests like crap. These actors are human beings, a con should treat them like human beings and Creation is famous for treating their guests like crap.)
I don't go to Sci Fi conventions, but I do wear a kilt at celtic festivals and once wore one at a ren fest, even though modern kilts are totally the wrong period for the latter. I guess there are guys in kilts anywhere that there are people dressed weird, LOL!
I wear a sporran and long socks with a kilt at public events, but tend not to at home. A modern hip pack is way more practical than a sporran.
I don't wear my hair any different as a function of what I am wearing, and nor do I wear different underwear! Why would I?
I was wondering if guys wore underwear the kilt.
Also I was noticing that sometimes guys wear jeans or leggings under the kilt.
Some don't, but even in Scotland, many do. They say that in the military that they aren't supposed to, but I sure wouldn't want the job of checking!
It's a kilt. If I wore something under it then it would be a skirt.
Truth is a kilt is a skirt, but don't try telling a Scotsman that!

I love 'Space 1999' with Barbara Bain & Martin Landau - amazing Sci-Fi. for its time ( 1974-76 )
Space 1999 was cool--- watched it when I was a kid
Congratulations... I think you'll enjoy wearing it and since you are comfortable wearing shorts you will not feel odd wearing a kilt.
The debate about underwear with kilts has been a long standing question people wonder about... truth is, my understanding anyway of it, no underwear - if you are Scottish, you don't have anything on underneath the kilt.
You can wear knee high socks and boots with the kilts, but I've also seen guys wear lower socks and shoes - work boot style, too. depends on the event. Formal events wear nicer shoes or boots and you can add all sorts of attire to it. Do a search on line and look at pictures of guys wearing kilts. You'll get your questions answered.
Good Luck with your new adventure in fashion...

good on ya 'LHIA' - way to go !!!
Hi LHIA,
Well, I can tell you one thing. I bet you will look just awesome no matter what you wear with the kilt! The kilt will go just great with your wonderful hair! Go for it and enjoy!

Thank you for the comments.
More than likely it will be a year before I get a chance to wear
it at this science fiction convention.
The con runs annually in January, we'll take a couple months off to rest up/recover at which point we'll start the long/time consuming task of preparing for the next con in January 2015.
Ultimately it takes a lot of people/time/resources to put together
a science fiction convention and it all starts up anew in March.
Nice!
I have collected a few kilts I like to wear now and then.
I'll wear them everywhere with any shirt, socks, shoes, hairdo that strikes my fancy.
Those "that guy is wearing a skirt" looks you get from others is priceless. :-)
You'll see a lot of kilts at beard and moustache competitions.
I find the kilt to be much more male-anatomy friendly than pants.
