Next Sunday February 9th CBS will repeat that legendary
Ed Sullivan episode where the Bestles made their debut.
It was that appearance on that day that inspired me to
grow my hair long. Their hair was short compared to later
years when guys like me grew their hair to waist length or
even knee length like I had in the 80s.
Yes their hair was short but when you grow uour hair you
have to start somewhere. But that short hair very controversial at the time since it wasn't as short as many thought it should
be.
"It was fifty years ago today,
Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play
They've been going in and out of style
But they're guaranteed to raise a smile.
So may I introduce to you
The act you've known for all these years,
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
8-10pm eastern time on CBS.
At 59 years old I now feel really really old.
Wow, and it seems just like yesterday. 59 old? No way. I am 65 so am getting closer. LOL
But getting back to the Beatles. I can remember hearing my sister screaming at whatever she was watching on TV. I went to look and wondered what she was screaming about? I thought hey, what a neat group and despite being all wrapped-up in Classical Music, was enjoying very much hearing something entirely different. Also the long hair. I thought it was great! And then mother suddenly appeared with a most "classic comment" that only she could conjure up: "Oh no, what is the world coming to. Men that look like women!" I remember quite well thinking that I didn't think they looked like women at all. Oh well, she got over it quickly enough and never did accuse me of looking like a Girl. :-)
Justin~
Nope, sure doesn't look like a bunch of women to me now nor did it back then. (Even the teen girls KNEW they were guys.) Oh well, mothers are mothers are mothers I guess. LOL Guess it must have startled her however as this was hardly the "norm" to witness for her on a TV show back then. She recoverd in short order however and never ever once had a problem with anything I ever did with my own hair.
Thank you for sharing those pics. Hmmmmm, perhaps I should "colorize" one of them. Hope you had a nice weekend.
Justin~
Oh yes, I remember it well. I was 12 years old, sitting cross legged on the couch. Watching them I immediately started pulling my hair out over my foreead, I a cut at the ime that was quite acceptable. Longer on top but still clipped neatly on the sides and back. No kidding. before that show was over I had had an epiphany. My hair would grow. No more monthly treks to George, the friendly barber. My parents braced at this at first, but actually relented with my promise to keep it neat and clean, which I did, and have always done. I was able to affect the 'Beatles" look almost immediately. A fact that disturbed some elders at school and delighted my friends, male and female. Some guys were right there with me as we grew our hair to ever greater lengths. One other note from that evening. As I watched the Beatles. My thoughts went to the piano. I decided that I had made a mistake, that a guitar is what I wanted... However, Pianoes, being a not inexpensive instrument, assured my parents would be less likely to acquiesce to my idea to change my musical direction. In time, I did get a guitar, and an amp, and for good measure a Hammond B-2 and a Leslie to boot. Good times, good music. good memories, and good hair.

Just spent around 30 minutes trying my hand at a colorization of this famous group. (With another couple of hours work, I could have done better.) Skin tone has always been my first priority and is a very lengthy job to try and get just right. Oh well, for what it is worth...........the "Justin" version. LOL
Enjoy! :-)

Well, these types of photos do seem to turn color with age. Either faded-out or darkened. LOL
J~
When I saw it,it was in black and white. We didn't get a color tv until many years later. (1970s).
BTW, what the heck they doing with their hands? Trying to choke each other?
*Same here.
*Sure beats me! LOL
I think they were trying to be cute - and if I recall - there were a whole lot of screaming females all over them - so, my guess is - it worked. (this is a great picture, Justin)
Fitz
Thanks so much Fitz. Yes, I just figured they were having some innocent fun. Take care-
Justin~
Very nicely done.
Thanks. :-)
Are you kidding, the colorization fits the picture very good,....,
only 30 minutes,..., very nice.
- Christian
Thanks. You are much too kind. :-)

... what an amazing pic. of raw talent, youth exuberance & zest for fun, adventure & life - 'birds of a feather flock together' = their dynamic was entrancing: ( especially in the fullness of time ) ... 'Ringo's' smile / laugh is priceless ...
Yes indeed and how true. Glad you enjoyed this CEM. All the best-
Justin~
This is horrible, Justin! We all know the Beatles were black and white until they got older. They never got color in their skins or wore clothes that were not shades of gray until about the time Sergeant Pepper came out. Also, the Beatles did not learn how to sing in stereo until about then. [wink]
Bill
I would point out for me everything on TV was black and white
until about 1970 when we got our first color tv. Sure there were shows in color but we only had a black and white tv.
It was not unusual for kids who wished they had a color TV to take to their parents' black and white TV with crayons. This never went over well with Mom and Dad.
Bill
Yes I know the old feeling since I was a freshman in high school
at the time although I missed seeing it the first time. We
lived where the typical roof top antenna wouldn't work so we
didn't have a TV so I had no idea what everybody was talking
about at school Monday.
Yes, and it came just in time for me. I remember having a desire to have long hair even before the Beatles arrived. They would open the gate but it would be about a decade later before I would win the battle with my parents to grow my hair out!
Growing up in England, the relevant date for me (when I personally became aware of the Beatles) is the original release date of 'She Loves You', which was the 23rd of August, 1963. So 50 years has already come and gone.
I remember a boy called Phillip Sliney (yes, we did call him Slimey!) wearing a plastic (!) Beatles wig from Woolworths' (yes, I know it was an American chain) for 'dress-up' at school. I was 5 when She Loves You was released, and had started school when I was 4 (and yes, I am am talking about proper school, not some sort of kindergarten).
So, I was a fan from age 5, and succeeded in persuading my parents to put up Beatles wallpaper in my bedroom!
It was a really good shoe that night,a really good shoe. My Ed Sullivan imitation via inter-web.
""And now, right here on our stage...", "For all you youngsters out there...", and "a really big shew" (his pronunciation of the word "show"). "
To get a flavor of Ed Sullivan at the time look up some of the
battles he had with a number of the performers on the show. It was a time when tv actually had censors. On TV it was a very different time.
And then there was Elvis.................
