My wife made me a suggestion. Instead of pushing it all behind my ears as if I already had a ponytail, just let it flow over the ears like when I was a teenager.
I must admit it is more flowing, and a way to deal with hair that is still a long way from ponytail length. It seems the most natural for the little I can do at present.
Any other "awkward hair-ers" with ideas?

Get used to the center part, because you'll be wearing that for quite a while.
Also, tucking your hair back may result in it giving you permanent curls at the ends of your hair -- keep the ends as straight as possible so that you don't end up having to lop off the ends because they got too curly.

Hello Anthony, may I suggest to follow your wies advice and just let it flow and don't worry too much about your appearance, it makes it worse.
Your waves look very good on you.
Another option could be some kind of a slicked back look, I do it myself if it becomes too greasy and I don't have enough time for washing it in that case you don't need any pruducts to hold them in place.

I would say to follow your wife's suggestion and just let your hair
flow over the ears.
I've never been a fan of pushing it behind the ears. To me it looks like you're hiding it behind the ears. Even with a ponytail I like to leave some hair over the ears. I think I like hair over the ears because as a kid my dad always kept his hair cut short and he had these huge elephant ears sticking out. Even in pictures of my dad as a kid he had big ears.
Thank you, all. I'm letting it flow naturally over the ears, and it falls into place. I dont get an artificial curl on parts of my hair that in a years time will be partly the way down my back. Ill look at styles later when I get to the right length. I notice that in 18th century styles (with natural hair, not the wig) the ears are covered and the hair is not too tightened to the ponytail. I wouldnt have the permed curls they had. I am for greater simplicity, but I might be in for some curls going by the hair on the back of my head, now about 3 ½ inches long (tapered to nothing last October).
For now, Im just biding my time and letting it grow, and looking after it with the usual washing / conditioning care. I notice the hair is more oily after several days, but I have never been of a greasy complexion. Like my late mother, I have always been dry-skinned and dry-haired. So I just take it easy and get on with life. I dreaded social occasions with conservative people a little, but my wife has a way of laying it on thick. This Englishman is growing it out long! Looks of surprise and polite acquiescence. Im beginning to find this tremendous fun.
I find the hair actually looks longer with the continuation between my side bangs and the back. Im buying it.

I have thinner hair so if I don't wash it at least every other day I look greasy on the third day. My 89 year old dad commented "Do they let you go to work with your hair that long?" I don't get the "get a haircut" comments anymore so they just give the dirty looks from my conservative family. I'm at almost 18 months without a cut and my hair is almost 10" long.
Letting it flow is what I have done this time around. The last time I grew it out I pushed behind the ears all the time. I think it looks better and is certainly easier to let it flow.
