Hey, I use to post here like six years ago, when I was a teenager. I got my hair to about shoulder length before I broke to social pressure. I've been growing my hair out from a buzz cut (sorry no pictures, webcam doesnt work) since the summer, and I'm well into the awkward phase ATM. I know the general thoughts here is 'if your going through hell, keep going' so to speak, but I'd still appreciate some thoughts.
Anyway, my real issue with my hair really is just that I'm full out sporting the mullet look, which I guess is inevitable given I'm growing it right out from a buzz cut. So I have a couple questions: If I dont trim the back of my hair and just continue to let it grow, will it eventually reach a sort of 'natural' looking point, where the back looks appropriately lengthed relative to the sides and bangs? (appropriate is a little subjective, I guess I just mean what youd expect for straight long hair) And if I do decide to go through a trim, what would be a good rule of thumb about this? I've seen some youtube videos where the guy in question is trimming the back of his hair every month or so, until the bangs and sides are about in length to the back of his neck, to 'skip the awkward stage', is that even really viable?
;) I know this might read a little bit like I'm looking for reassurance, and thats definitely half true. Thanks for any replies :D
Trimming doesn't help you skip the awkward phase bc that has more to do with the length of the front getting in the way etc, but it will help make it look less like a mullet. I didn't cut mine because then you lose some length overall and I liked that extra length in back, plus when your hair gets longer it doesn't look awkward anymore. The end of the awkward stage is usually when you can tie a ponytail and the back doesn't matter to much for that. It's just up to you.
Just leave it to grow, cutting won't help at all. AS time goes by it will quickly start to look 'normal'.
There is No way to avoid the awkward stage, Enjoy it. It means you are making progress. And, if you have straight hair, it will be minimal compared with those who get a more "bushy" look when going through it. Also, if you keep trimming the back, you will end up with a "bob" type of look. It can make some look feminine. NO judgment intended, but you may be exchanging one look you don't like for another. In the end, the back of your hair just Naturally is longer and looks best that way, in my opinion. I know how you feel, and the impatience, but you get used to the process and actually, the vast majority of people really don't care about how you look as much as you think. Best of luck.
I found that cutting the back of my neck area helped prevent the mullet look early on in the awkward stage. I wish I had that extra couple inches now, but I think it was a worthwhile trade-off.
