This could be of some encouragement to our "awkward stage" friends.
My wife and I went out for the afternoon yesterday and the hair subject came up. No, not a haircut! I talked with her about the "philosophical" aspect, and she finally understood that I'm serious about this. I reassured her by saying that I would probably not go (much) beyond shoulder blade length.
The photo on the left is from January 20th at about 3-4 months from my last cut, so this difference is about 50 days. Does this seem average to you?

I as well shared my philosophical reasoning to my wife already. Your hair will only get more awkward before you get more comfortable with it (the rite of passage). Do continue to let it grow, I have been growing mine about the same amount of time as you, 4 months now. Keep up the growing and don't be concerned about a little hair "out of place" because it will get worse before it gets better as it will for me as well.
Take care,
Seminole
Correction, you are ahead of me in growth months, I misread your post.
It's nice to be ahead of someone here! :)
As I mentioned, I'm glad my real beginner stage was unintentional, because I simply neglected to cut it. When I decided to grow it, I had a 3-month start.

Thank you for your encouragement. It has occurred to me that some women might have the idea of maintaining a man in the awkward stage in order that he should give up and get a haircut. This would be done by the so-called "equalizing trims" to "stimulate growth". I know that all cutting does is to shorten it! I won't have the old tales.
This is something we have to be aware of to persevere through this phase and resist the criticisms. This is going to take about a year! So all one can do is wash, condition and groom - so that my wife doesn't have the excuse of the hair being unkempt. My wife seemed sympathetic the other day, but La donna è mobile - the woman changes her mind on a whim and quickly forgets about it.
So no scissors until everything is ponytail length and at least down to the shoulder blades. Then trimming is a good idea to get a nice clean end. Naturally, it isn't "to" the ponytail but far beyond, otherwise you get a stubby tail and no possibility for nice hairstyles for different occasions.
That's my mind, according to what I have learned on this forum and my determination to go through with it. No guillotine for me even though I live in France!

I as well am sticking to what I have learned on the site here. I will not trim it, however, I do believe that there will come a point of a few months where we won't be able to look "presentable" no matter what we do, but I can withstand that as well. Take care and keep us updated here.

"Presentable" is a matter of opinion.
IMHO every guy on his site with long hair is much
more presentable than that guy who hss a massive comb over to
cover his bald spot.
I completely agree with you and I agree with it being a matter of opinion. That was my intention with the parentheses to give the false standard.
Thanks,

Hi Anthony,
Needless to say, I know your hair would look very nice past shoulder blade length! But as they say, "happy wife, happy life"! But yes, your growth seems average to me. Keep it growing please!
Ted
Hey Anthony,
I can definitely see the progress over the past 50 days. Your hair appears to be very thick!
