A number of years ago, when my hair was long but not long enough to stay tucked under the back of a jacket (leather or otherwise) while riding bikes, I would pony tail my hair to prevent huge snarls, however that did not protect the end that protruded from under the helmet.
Anyone who's ever ridden knows how snug a fit a helmet should be without excess hair taking up additional space (and trapping more heat, getting totally sweaty and gross). I still like to look good at the end of a ride.
So, aside from braiding it which I can't do myself, and I often ride solo, is there anything else you can suggest; products to wrap my entire pony tail in and lace it up, etc that would prevent the painful de-snarling process for the amount of hair sticking out from under the helmet. Going to be even more of a challenge for me now, as my hair is even longer than it was back when riding, and in a couple months I'll be buying a used bike (H-D Heritage Softail or Road King for those who like Harleys).

You might want to look for a product called a ponytail wrap, or a hair glove. They come in different lengths, so you could buy one long enough to completely encase your hair, to protect it while riding. I added a link of one such place that sells these, search by either term, and you can find many more. If you have a shop near you that sells biker items, they probably have these there.

Braiding your hair is easier than you think. Just divide it into three and repeat bringing each side alternately into the middle. OTOH, it tends to take a while when you need to hop on your bike and zoom off somewhere. Hairgloves are a reasonable suggestion.
Hi David,
I enjoyed reading Carol's reply, and also enjoyed looking at the link that she supplied re. the hair gloves you can buy. But also, just for the record, if you don't wish to spend any extra money than necessary, just take several of your regular brand of hair-ties (AKA ponytail bands), and then create a segmented ponytail where you put a hair-tie every inch or 2 down the length of your hair... it's cheap, it's relatively fast to do (although once you get used to braiding your own hair, the braiding process doesn't take that much longer, after you get the hang of it), AND it can look good!
I don't happen to ride a motorcycle (I'm too uncoordinated to do so -- although I've been mistaken for being a biker, especially when wearing my hair down and having my black leather jacket on); but I've found myself in plenty of other situations where de-tangling is a hell of a lot of work after being out in the open wind -- so I've learned the value of prevention!
I hope my reply here has been helpful!

Great update... thanks for sharing! I believe learning to braid your own hair would be a small but worthwhile investment of your time. Barring that, using multiple hair ties would certainly protect your hair when riding.
Cheers,
