Hello all,
First, l would like to say that I have been a longtime lurker (7 years or so) and have always found the site to be extremely interesting and informative on the topic. Beyond that, it seems to be very welcoming, supportive, and a great place to meet likeminded individuals the world over. You can all share a sense of pride in the community that you have built, as I am sure you know.
As for me, I have had relatively short hair all my life. With the exception of military basic training, I have always avoided the buzz-cut. For reasons I do not quite understand (perhaps the desire to be a little different) I have always wanted to grow out my hair beyond the traditional classic mens cuts. As with many other members (and people in general) I have never really given it a proper go. For many reasons related to perceived professionalism at work, self-consciousness, or whatever else, I continued to keep it short. It isnt that I didnt like it, just that I always wanted to try something else.
In any case, due to some personal reason (all positive) which will see me relieved of my work concerns for a while, I have decided the time is now. My last haircut was in mid-January and I have so far resisted the urge to do anything to it. This is of course proving more difficult than expected, but I am also pleasantly surprised that my hair is growing faster than I had expected. As you can see, it is quite thick, and rather wavy. This is proving to be the hardest part about keeping it managed, but I think I am doing alright so far. Anyway, I hope to post more pictures and get to know you all better along the journey. For those who are curious, the goal is only shoulder length, but I seem to see a pattern of going beyond original goals on this site, so who knows...

Welcome Steven,
I have hair that is similar to yours, maybe slightly less wavy, and I've gone through the growing phase three times now. My best advice is to let your hair fall where it wants to, the extent that that is practical for you. In other words, too much hair management can drive you as nuts as too little. Remember that A) we are our own worst critics, so what you see in the mirror may not provoke the same reaction at all in an observer, and B) full, wavy, "wild" hair is something that some people pay money to get at a salon. I think you're off to a good start, and your thick wavy hair could look really good when it's long.
Has anyone ever said that you look like the actor Shia LaBeouf? I think I see a resemblance.
Chris
first, you have gotten to a classic pompadour, mid to akward
continue triming the nek for staying neat
and i wish you a good journey to long hair
Excellent advice. Thank you.

Thank you, very much. I'd like think you're right. I've always been fond of long, thick waves for both men and women. I might as well enjoy my hair while I have it.
I haven't been told that before. Though I am often told I look a bit like Mathew Lillard.

Steven,
I applaud you for pursuing this. I'm almost 2 years into growing hair overcoming many of your stated hesitations. I can honestly say it's been an overwhelmingly positive experience for me. My initial goal was shoulder length and now I'm well past that. I can't stop!!!! It's just so liberating!
Let this board support you and keep growing!!
Tony
Looking forward to your next photo update, Tony!
It's good to read you feel so positive about your experience.

Welcome Steve - you've gr8. hair to work with:- thick, full, wavy & dark, a real head-turner - only advice this early in the piece is look after it - shiny hair always makes people notice in a positive way ... good luck & cheers CEM. :)
You have great potential for long hair with it being thick. You obviously look after your hair very well. Your problem will be the "awkward stage", so you need to have the right "let go" attitude to get through the months of messy hair. You will have to persevere so that you can get the weight of the hair downwards so that you can tie it up or have it hand loose without too many curls sticking out at the sides.
I am exactly in that phase:
So, be ready for it. We're all supporting each other, and the real longhairs are looking at us "awkward stagers" and saying "I went through all that and the race is won".
Good luck,
Anthony

You look like a classy guy, Steven. It may be a challenge for you to let go and grow your hair through the year or so that it takes to get through the awkward stage.
Some of the guys here who are concerned with a more business professional work environment could give you advice to get through it.
Best wishes, and welcome to the status of "un-lurked" member.

Hi Steven,
Welcome to the board and I'm happy you came out of lurking! You have definitely arrived at the correct place for help in growing your hair! I believe your hair will look awesome when it gets longer! The waves will give it nice movement and the dark rich color is great! I do wish you much success in growing out a fabulous mane! Please be well my friend!

Welcome to the MLHH, and thanks for the great introduction. Based on your photos, I'd say you have a tremendous head of hair to work with in terms of quality, and I believe long hair will suit you very well. Please stick around, and keep us posted on your progress.
Cheers,
Val
