I am sending this in to mark my first half-year since my last haircut. I don't remember exactly when that funeste event took place, but I am placing it at the end of September 2013. I have a "no-cut" chart (mainly for the benefit of my wife), which I mark at the end of each month. On Sunday, there will be 6 crosses on it. I have taken the chart up to September 2016.
Some interesting curls are showing up. This is really a discovery! I always thought my hair was dead straight.

Hi Anthony, you made great progress in 6 months, your curls are more similar to mine now (they tend to act funny sometimes)
By the way in most cases curls or waves tend to reinforce during the process of aging.

Many thanks for your kind words. Just enjoy the curls, be patient and they will go downwards as the hair grows. You might feel embarrassed at social occasions with awkward stage hair. Don't. Just keep it clean and conditioned and combed.
Don't forget to send updates too.

It's coming along pretty well. When I grew my hair out I thought that it was straight too and when the waves showed up, it took me at least two years to accept my hair type the way it is. By that I mean that I tried to make it as straight as possible, which lead to lots of damage done to my hair. I could have had hair below chest length now, if I had known about this hyperboard years ago.
It's thanks to this board that I have avoid the errors of many newbies like "cutting to stimulate growth" or trying to style the awkward phase. When I was a kid, I hated my straight hair and wanted curls. My mother told me to eat my vegetables like a good boy. She didn't tell me to grow my hair!
I have also avoided all electrical and mechanical means of setting or drying my hair. Guys on this board have amply tipped me off to the importance of washing / conditioning and natural air drying. This is important especially for greying hair on someone getting on in years (though men older than me are doing extremely well).
I just need the length that only time and patience can bring. Thanks for the kind words.

Your hair is going to be epic when it's long! I'm enjoying following your journey and vicariously sharing your enthusiasm and joy in doing something you've wanted to do for a long time.
I think it must be just about passing the point at which I had my hair at age 21. I was a student in London, and the result of a visit home was the inevitable haircut at the local barber's shop. In my 50's I know what I want and I'm sticking to it!
Epic hair? Well yours is an inspiration. You started a lot younger with your "German battle helmet", years of growth and your recent trim across the back which as improved it as well as making it more practical for your sports and outdoor activity.
Needing a headband for going sailing is a landmark for me.
Keep yours as lovely as it is!

Hi Anthony,
This is a wonderful update for 6 months! Your hair is looking great and the color is very striking! I don't think your hair is really curly. I think it's going to straighten out as it gets longer and heavier. But I do like the movement the waves give your hair. Please keep it growing and please be well!

Anthony,
Congratulations on reaching the half-year mark! Your hair is coming along very nicely... looking better and better as it grows. Based on your photos, I don't think your "awkward" stage is going to look very awkward. It's obvious that you keep your hair in good condition, and your confident bearing makes it look good at every length. I, too, was surprised to find waves appearing in my own hair the first time I grew it out, and by the time it reached shoulder length, it had formed into ringlets at the ends. Have fun, and keep us posted!
Cheers,
Val
Val,
Many thanks for your kind words. I'm rather pleased with it myself. I wash it once a week with shampoo and conditioner, and if it needs in-between washes, I do it with conditioner alone. The stuff I use smells of coconuts, so I assume it contains coconut oil.
Yes I have the bearing of my father, and of my grandfather who was an Army officer. My mother once taught physical education and was most insistent on the posture of her children. I must be a relic of the British Empire!!!
My wife often has comments about the waves, but I just tell her they will look better further down - and there will be no cutting. She might get a little trim in the summer of autumn of 2015 just to get a nice line across the back. Plenty of time to decide on a "V", a round or straight line... Perhaps the scissors will have gone rusty!
As I say, I'm enjoying it, even when I get the usual comments from some people - I'm immune.
Regards,
Anthony
