Can someone please tell me what I should/could do to strengthen my hair/follicles? I've been growing my hair for about 3 years now (down to mid-shoulder-blades), but my style is the type with shaved sides. It's pretty much a mohawk, but a little wider on top so it doesn't look as bad for work.
I've been told by every stylist I've ever had that my hair is thin (not thinning), but I have a lot of it. Well, I seem to shed quite a bit, and because of the style of my hair, I really notice it. It's long, but if I keep shedding the way I do, it seems like it won't be long before the long hairs I do have will start looking too sparse - even though the ones falling out are growing back - I hope. :-)
Now, I 'm pretty sure that the hairs are not breaking off because I have very few split ends, and the hairs coming out are all long. So, to help prevent further unnecessary shedding, maybe I should try to find a way to strengthen my follicles. Any other ideas of what may be going on, and does anyone else have my situation?
Any advice/suggestions, recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!
Most men will eventually be 'touched' by male pattern hair loss. It's an odd fact, but the percentage of men affected is roughly equal to their age; i.e. at 35 years old, 35% of men will have significant hair loss. By age 60, 60% will.
Thin hair may or may not be a manifestation of male pattern hair loss. It might not be, but you indicated that the extent of your physical 'shedding' is a bother to you.
You should probably consult a dermatologist, who probably sees quite a bit of MPB.
There are two medications which probably will help you. One is minoxidil, 5%. This is available over the counter. The other is Propecia. It is available by prescription only.
They are best at helping save what hair you have. Some people do experience moderate regrowth. Propecia, especially, has been shown to increase the hair shaft thickness.
Good luck!
