i've been growing my hair for about 2 yrs & it's very thick.
i want it to be more manageable - especially to fall back instead of in my face when it's not tied. does anyone recommend getting it thinned out? will it make my life easier without compromising volume? if thinning isn't the way to go, how can i make it stay in place otherwise?
Gel, alice band, oils, barettes, and other things will help you make it more manageable.
NO! To the thought of thinning shears. My mother did that to me once when I was a little kid... just no.
I had thinning shears at the barber's shop when I was little. My mother also went on about my hair being too thick. I hated haircuts, especially when done by a barber over whom I had no control. I'm glad it was thick then, because it still is now!
Just keep those scissors away from your head and manage your awkward stage as we all have to.

Hi aaron,
A photo of your hair would help here. You say your hair is very thick. But is it curly, wavy or straight? Without a photo, I would suspect your hair is probably not quite long enough to fall nicely back like you want. If you use thinning shears, you will create multiple shorter hairs throughout your hair. This will most likely prolong your problem.
What I would do is just keep letting your hair grow. Depending on what type of hair you have I would choose a suitable method to keep it under control. I have been growing my hair for almost 2 years and it still requires things to keep it out of my face. Sometimes a cap looks good or using gel or hair bands etc. Each person looks better or prefers different methods of restraint. Hope this helps! Please be well!

Thinning scissors may work well for a man with short hair and who wants less volume of it. They don't work at all for a man who has, or is aiming to have, long hair. Hair eventually grows to look like the chart above, and having sparse strands at the bottom is the bane of any longhair who wants to grow out a good looking mane. If you remove half your strands up top, that may look okay up there, but that means you will have half as many strands at the bottom!
Not good.
