Just started growing it out I previously had an undercut, so the top is at about 9 inches and the sides 2.5. I hope to get it to about shoulder length all the way around.. Any guesstimates on how long it might take?
Im still in the awkward phase most of the time I just throw on a beanie or a toque.. is there any problem with keeping a hat on too much? I wear a mini ponytail if I am at the gym.
Most IMPORTANTLY I can't tell if this is paranoia or its more noticeable now that my hair is longer, but I am notice I am shedding a lot. When I run my hand through my head I always come out with a few strands. I get scabs on my head (I believe its sebbhorheic dermatitis) I think some hair loss might be because of that. I still have a full head of hair though (knock on wood)
So to summarize my questions:
Is it bad to wear a toque too much to disguise the awkward phase?
Does longer hair make shedding more noticeable and I am just paranoid.
Are fine tooth combs bad for your hair?
Also any tips on maintenance and hygiene tips
And one recommendation from start using coconut oil on your head its a great natural conditioner.
Apologies for the long post.
So to summarize my questions:
Hi 'TJ' - welcome to 'MLHH' - no wear wotever you like to help you thru. your awkward phase = but stop & smell da roses = N'Joy ur awkward phase = I did- yes longer hair makes shedding more noticeable: ( I have plant-pots full-o-sheds & I know Scott has a 'RIP' box fer his ... hehehe ) - if scalp is inflamed = I use an anti-dandruff shampoo & conditioner - & yes use coconut oil: ( or olive oil monthly or bi-monthly ) = good luck !!! oh & hide those scissors where ewe'll never, ever find 'em cheers & good luck CEM. :O)
I think another reason long hair makes you think you are loosing more hair is because the hair tends to naturally part a lot more so you see a lot more of your scalp making you think its thinning. My dads side of the family is almost all balding so I have always been sort of paranoid about this.
You shed the same number of hair strands each day whether they be long or short. If each strand is a foot long instead of an inch long, yeah, each day you will get a twelve times bigger mass of hair. All that hair that used to end up on the barber shop floor didn't go away. Now it ends up on the floor in your house.

I agree with everything C.E.M. said. As one who still has an
undercut you are living proof that an undercut can be grown out
and that you don't have to cut it all off and start over again.
Not only that starting with an undercut lessened the awkward phase I think. But now its just a game of catchup waiting for the back and sides to grow to match the top
