Although I'm no stranger to having long hair, I only really grew it out once to all one length, which is my goal again this time. As I'm growing it out, the sooner I can get it into a pony tail, the better. Right now I'm starting almost from a buzz cut, although my top is a bit longer than the sides.
Should I keep cutting the sides until it's all one length, or would it be better for me to just let it all grow? Which would be the quicker way to get my hair into a ponytail?
Either way, the last hairs to be long enough to go into the tail will get there at the same time. Your hair will LOOK longer, however, if you just let it grow. You will have to shove your bangs behind your ears, but you will have most of your ponytail way sooner. Also, you will avoid that BOWL HEAD look.

If you do get an undercut, at least wait until the hair on top starts to go over the ears. That will cover the shorter hair on the sides reducing the mushroom look. Either way, do not get a severe undercut, and if you leave the back alone it will go into a pony tail with less time.
It's not going to grow all out if you were to keep cutting the sides. I suggest that you just let it grow all out and enjoy each stage of your hair's growth!
...and grow until it goes into a ponytail.
I once heard that one of the best ways to grow hair out nicely
was to start with all one length. Now
since you are starting from a buzz cut, that is
exactly what you have.
It may seem longer on the sides but how can that be?
Just an illusion I would imagine.
Leave it alone...
...it's going to take long enough to grow as it is!
Luck to you!
Not an illusion at all. The reason it looks longer on the sides is because it starts growing at a lower point on the head. The hair on top of the head has the highest point to grow from. So when guys get their bangs down to their chin and then even it out all around the head, the hair on top of the head is actually the longest hair, and the hair at the base of the neck is the shortest hair. The human head is fortunatly not flat!
Thanks for the words, guys. I think I'll try to just let it go and see what happens.
