I had been shaving my ever thinning, balding pate for 20 years. A recent family tragedy led me to stop. Now that it has been 2 months... I don't really have the energy to start shaving my head again, so I sort of said... f' it.
Am I totally nuts? Will I look like some crazy man? Is long hair only or the young or those who are not foliically challenged?
Steve
Is long hair only for the young? No says this 59 year old.
I've also seen a number of guys who rock long hair even though
they are foliically challenged. I've even seen guys who were bald
on top but grew the sides to long lengths. My philosophy is, as long as you're alive you should grow your hair while you're still alive to do it. So no you're not totally nuts.
The bottom line is life on this planet is very short,
you should grow your hair now while you're now while you're still alive to do it. I'm 59 now, I've had alot of friends and family who have died in recent years. And now that i'm 59
I realize how short life is and how everything can change in
an instant.
I would also add that at the age of 59 I wear my hair the way I want to. I gave up long ago caring what others thought of my hair.
So if you want long hair, even though you are foliically challenged, then by all means, go for it.
I completely agree with 'Long Hair In Albany' I just turned 60 and just started growing my thinning on top hair for over 18 months. I wish I had started growing years ago.

You have a magnificent beard. You may want to focus on that. You may be able to grow it to two feet long. You can probably grow some head hair from the sides and back too.
Scott
I will add to what Scott said. When a man grows a LARGE beard like you have, he's often seen as in the same social circles as longhaired men are, both by longhaired men and by others. Quite a few people will see so much beard that in retrospect they won't remember that you were bald on top.
Bill
Do it, if you want. I see plenty of bald guys with long hair. If I go bald I'll keep my hair long too.
Hi Steve,
Welcome to the board! Absolutely you should bother! I believe your hair would look just fine if you grew it out! Long hair is for anyone who wants it and I think you should go for it! Nothing ventured nothing gained! You are not totally nuts and you will look like a badass guy with long hair! So go for it! Please be well my friend!
Ted
If you don't try, you will never know...
Thanks gentlemen... yesterday I turned 50... and have just decided... what the hell... I recently lost my husband... and it's not like I need to impress anyone... and only really have to be happy for myself.
I had long hair back in the 80s, in college, and as soon as I graduated... it started to thin, in the front... so off it came. You live and learn.
Here is a front pic, with the beard... (tied). It is JUST about 15".
Steve
Hi Steve,
Thanks for posting this very nice photo! You have a perfect beard/mustache combo with great color! Great smile goes along wonderfully! I know if you grow your hair it will look just awesome!
Sorry to hear of your loss and I surely hope you just try to make yourself happy! Looking great for 50 my friend! Please be welll!
Ted
This is a fantastic picture, Steve. You have an awesome beard and you are a good looking man... Like others have said, you won't know till you try. I understand your feelings on the topic, though. I have been growing my hair out for about 16 months - I always wanted to try to grow it out - should have done it years ago when I had beautiful, thick hair - but the years have brought about a thinning process - I am not bald, but it is pretty weak growth up there on top... I am not a fan of hats and I don't really like how my hair looks up there - but, I keep going. All along, almost on a daily basis, I realize that I don't think it looks good - then, I say f#*%\it - and keep going. I realize, though - that the bottom line is how I feel and if I feel good about myself... I always think other guys look better than I do. But, that's just me.
I'm glad you posted your pics. Let us know what you do as you go along - we love updates. My sympathies to you in the loss of your husband. Best wishes.
Fitz
Welcome to the board, Steve.

ABSOLUTELY ..... As I have stated, I will probably be bald on top before I get to midback...but I don't care...
By the way .. AWESOME beard....Mine is 4" long now and I only trim the sides....
I wished I would have started earlier... girlfriend said she liked guys with long hair... then gets mad at me for having it.... that was 20 years ago.... Now I am doing what I want..
All the best ... The Spaf Man
Steve,
I wouldn't worry at all about how you will look with long hair. I think it will go great with your amazing beard. As mentioned, most people probably won't even notice your longer hair with the beard up front and center getting all the attention!

Long and bald. I usually have it tied back.
A co-worker recently asked me if I considered cutting it off because I don't have that many hairs that grow long and cutting it to about 1/4 inch (don't go completely bald because I would look like a cancer patient) would be going bald gracefully. I replied by saying that this is 'Putting up the good fight.' As long as I can grow some of my hairs long, I will continue to do so.
Hi Runningball,
I have to jump in here and say that you look great with long hair! The moustache and long hair go very well together and I love the color! I sure hope you keep it growing and flowing!
Ted
Well spoken! I am growing out till it falls out..
Thanks for posting!
