Happy Father's Day, my friends! I'm still going strong on that promise to my son, that I won't cut my hair for at least a year (which he has since amended to TWO years). No worries... I'm in it for the long haul this time, and loving every moment of the process. This is 8-1/2 months, right after this morning's shower.
Cheers,
Val
Okay technology, you win this time.

I noticed those sprigs of white coming out of your beard, Val. Maybe I wouldn't have if you'd beaten technology on this round.
Glad to hear from you. Good to see your progress.
Fitz
Haha... thanks, Fitz. No worries about the white whiskers, as I wear them proudly :) My hope is to eventually enjoy my elderhood with a cool Santa-type look.
--Val
That will be awesome, Val!
Nice update, Val! Eventhough the new age technology of the MLHH has beaten you again, as it has me many times! ;)
Hair and beard look great, though I wonder... 8.5 months? Does that mean you cut your hair back in last October or so? What happened?1
Thanks, Raul. I only have a problem getting those pictures upright when I post from my iPad. So much for "progress," eh?
Yes, my last haircut took place at the end of September 2013 (leaving about 1-inch on top, and 1/2-inch on the back and sides). My hair grows at an average rate of 5/8-inch per month.
Nice to be (re)joining you on the journey!

Wow bud, and here I had no idea!
Seems as if we cut our hair at the same time last year, though I was forced to shave it all off and started with a scalp as smooth as a baby's ass!
You hair seems to be growing a whole lot quicker than mine per month, but either way, good to have you on this ride at my phase of growing! Looking great :)
Yeah, it's cool to have someone at about the same point in the process to keep inspired... sort of like a workout partner! I can't say that my hair seems to grow faster than yours, though. Maybe it just appears that way in some photos due to your trimming of the back, but your bangs/fringe appear to be quite long already. Looking great, yourself! My hair is quite thick and fairly wavy, which also affects it's overall "impression."
Anyway, glad to be walking the walk with you, my friend :)
Cheers,
Val
We should set up a "September 2013 Haircut Club"! That was the time when for the last time I took an electric clipper to my head and cut it all to about half an inch and "military" style at the back and sides. I had been cutting my own hair for a couple of years.
I simply neglected the cutting until January 2014, and when my wife suggested a haircut, I said "No, I want to grow it long". I thus had a 3-month start.
I seem to be be getting a little more than my "statutory half-inch" per month, but the top is a little slower. I'll probably be out of the "awkward stage" by Christmas (15 months), but I'll still have the hair of the top of my head taking that much longer.
OK, September-2013-ers, keep the photos coming!
Anthony

My blog
I actually love the idea of the S13HCC!
Will post a thread with some pics in a sec, and hope you guys can do the same. Will be nice to compare hair growth rates so far :)
All cameras, including iPads, have an "up". Point that side at the sky when you click, and you should be fine!
If you don't know which side is up, label one side as "up" and take a picture to post on MLHH that way. If it produces a picture that is upside down, then you goofed. Peel off the label and stick it on the opposite side.
If you take a photo in "portrait" (holding camera sideways) orientation, you'll have to rotate it to post it with the top up. Remember which way you pointed the "up" edge when you took the picture. When you post to MLHH, there is an option to rotate the picture 90 degrees in either direction. If you took the picture with the top of the camera on the right, for example, you'll want to rotate it to the left to upright it.

You seem to be having great fun with it. I too beat the technology and turned my computer screen upside down to see your photo the right way up. I was born in the 1950's, just 15 years after World War II - so we look for simple solutions!
Your two-year rule sounds like the way my wife stopped smoking. She promised to hold out for a thousand days, and if it was still unbearable, she would light up again. She never did - nor did I (I stopped nearly 8 years ago). Giving up hair cutting seems almost the same thing.
Do send us one of you with dry hair!

My blog
Hi Anthony,
Yes, I am enjoying the process. I was born in the 1970s, and also have vivid (and wonderful) memories of the world before computer technology and the internet infiltrated just about every aspect of daily life. Still, at least we have the MLHH as one of the online world's few saving graces! :)
Congratulations to both you and your wife on quitting smoking. It's true that setting small "stepping stone" goals can be a great strategy for eventually achieving larger life objectives.
I'll be sure to post an update photo with dry hair before too long.
Cheers,
Val
Hey Val,
Your hair is simply amazing and the way it defys gravity makes it that much more special! Lol. Seriously I'm happy to hear you in it for the " long haul" as you so rightfully put it:) It's a mission well worth taking with results that in no uncertain terms will be outstanding my friend. Cheers
Mârk
Hi Mârk... thanks for the kind words, my friend! Yes, it's amazing how a little humidity can have such a powerful anti-gravity effect upon the hair, isn't it? Haha :)
Best,
Val
I saved your photo to my laptop and rotated with Window 8 (which has been giving me problems with rotating photos). It stayed rotated on my laptop. Will try to upload here. Haven't had much luck lately on old tech boards not keeping up with the modern technology. My new camera and laptop auto rotate for me now, I just realizied. but portrait photos taken continue to lay on their sides when uploaded to old sights after rotating with Win 8. If I rotate on Win 7 they stay rotated after uploading.
Excellent 8 month update on head hair. how long is your beard in time and length? Looks to be the longest I have ever seen you bearded since following the MLHH board. I think you should grow your beard for a year and two years if ok with work, etc.
How long is your son's head hair now? If he has amended your head hair growing goal to 2 years, I think you should not teach him how to shave but to grow and groom his blond facial hair untrimmed when the time comes.
Thanks for the technical assistance... I guess I'm just an "old tech" kinda guy!
Thanks also for the kind and encouraging words. To the best of my recollection, the chin area of my beard has gone untrimmed for about 4 or 5 months. I trimmed the cheeks about a month ago, in order to create a more "elongated" appearance to the overall beard. Now I'm just going to let it all grow for awhile. My daughter wants me to grow it at least long enough for her to braid it :)
I'll post an update photo for my younger son's hair soon. It reaches to his waist, or a bit further. My older boy is still rocking the dreadlocks, too. Both look forward to the day they can also grow a beard :) Part of the "philosophy" of my household's culture is that men should not feel obligated to either cut short their cranial hair, nor scrape smooth their faces. Time will tell for what my youngest comes to prefer, who will be 2 in August.
Cheers,
Val
Hello Val, thanks for the well wishes on the holiday yesterday. I am interested to see your journey progress!
-Tommy
Thank you for the kind words, Tommy. The journey continues... :)
Cheers,
Val
What a fun pic, Val -- and believe it or not, I enjoy looking at it up-side down just as much as right-side up (LOL)!
You have such an excellent head of hair to work with, and your beard is a perfect compliment to your hair, too!! I always appreciate your updates and comments; so glad to see you back here again (so don't be such a stranger)!
Take Care -- and keep on with your hair-farming project!
- Ken in San Francisco
Thanks, Ken. Believe it or not, when it comes to you, I believe you WOULD enjoy looking at pictures upside down, inside out, and every interesting which-a-way... and I mean that in the most endearing sense :)! Your joyful energy and positive perspectives have always been a wonderful ingredient in the MLHH recipe.
Yours in happy hair farming,
Val
When your falls on your shoulders and your bear is at least twice this length, you could do the Blackbeard look (Braided beard) and it would look pretty epic on you. Anyways, great progress.
Haha... thanks, Michail! Great idea for Halloween... or anytime! :)

Happy late Father's day to you Val! I am so happy to hear your son amended your agreement to two years! And I am glad you're in it for the duration! Your hair is looking great for only 8.5 months! Just think what it will look like at 2 years! I can't wait to see it my friend! Please be well!
Ted
Thanks for the encouraging words, Ted! I look forward to continued motivational updates of yours, as well!
Cheers,
Val
Hi Val,
First of all, my apologies for the late reply, since I am on a short road trip in the USA, and so my Happy Father's Day greetings are belated ones.
Cheers to you on sticking to your hair growing journey, and it is doing very well so far. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to your future updates.
Keep it growing,
David
Thank you, David. I hope you're enjoying your road trip... if it happens to bring you to northern Wisconsin, let me know and I'll show you around our corner of the Lake Superior shoreline!
Cheers,
Val
