Hi All,
I recently got the ends of my hair trimmed and it turned out nice. I have a nice stylist who does a great job. I am finding that I have developed an anxiety with getting my hair trimmed. I hate to lose an inch to 3 inches of hair. On the other hand, I am certain that I do not want my hair to be longer than waist. I appreciate and admire people with longer hair, but I realize it would not fit my lifestyle. Has anyone else experienced this king of anxiety?

I get anxiety big time when I go for a trim. As a reseult i've taken trimming the hair myself.
Hair care professionals are the only business where you go and
tell them you want 1 inch of hair trimmed off and they take it
upon themselves to trim off eight inches.
I've never understood how they can get away with that.
it would be like if you hired a guy to paint your house a light
green and he decided no, he is going to paint it red. Or it would be like going to the car dealer and telling them you want a
blue car and they say "no you want a yellow car. So no you're not the only one who gets anxious about trims.
Actually car dealers really do like you tell you that you want something else than what you tell them you want, even if you have completely made up your mind and spent weeks researching, they think they know better :)
Thanks everyone for your responses! I guess a lot of us have this trimming anxiety. I have read on other boards, and it appears a lot of ladies have it as well. I apologize for the misspellings in my previous posts.

Except with a car you ultimately have the option walk out the door
without buying the car. (And signing the loan.)
With a haircut, it's done. They can't put the hair back on your head.
I've been debating for about 6 months whether or not I should clean up the ends of my hair. On the one hand I want to, but on the other hand I really don't want to lose any length (even if what I would lose is mostly split ends). My last cut was 2/15/07 and I haven't had any trims since then.
The last professional trim I had was done in August 2005 and ever since I've never had another.Maybe I'm paranoid but I just don't want people cutting my hair anymore. Guess I'm getting eccentric in my old age! Lol. Cheers

Nope.
The key is to find a stylist that you trust. Don't go to a walk up place, pay a cheap price, get a new stylist every time, then expect good results. That's just not logical.
I found a great stylist who helped me grow mine. I got a trim every 12 weeks while growing. If I said 1/4", then that is exactly what she trimmed. If I said 1/8", then that is what she cut.
I now have mine trimmed every 8 weeks. I get anywhere from a 1/2" to 1" trimmed...whatever I tell her. I had mine below waist for a while, but decided just above waist was right for me...and there is where I've kept it ever since.
Another piece of advice. Tip very well!!! I wear my hair every single day. Some people spend a lot on clothes, even clothes they seldom wear. But some of those same people will cheap out when it comes to their hair....I don't understand and see no logic in that thinking.
It sounds like you've found a great stylist! Stay loyal to her, tip well, and she will in return be loyal to you & your hair!
You can relax knowing your hair is in trusted hands :-)
Now I had found a great stylist years ago, the shop ended up closing and she was gone. That was about 16 years ago. Haven't found one I can trust since.
That is too bad. I've had 3....all from the same salon.
Do you ever get recommendations from other people with long hair? I like to get recommendations for all of my service people (plumber, mechanic, etc.)
For salons, I've never stepped into one of the "cheap" salons. I pay $28 for a cut/trim. I know some people don't want to pay that much, but I wear my hair every day...so it is worth it to me.
Sunsailing,
I know this is an old thread, but thanks for the good advice. I like you may have discovered that above waist is better for myself. I am not going to like hair stuck in my belt. I may even go back to lower back.

I think most of us have had to fight for our long hair against parent and wives, and have won by sheer will power. Going on someone's idea, I set up a "no cut" chart to cross off the months since my last haircut. Hair cutting thus becomes a taboo, because the pressure is in favour of cutting and returning to a "regulation" short hair style.
It is understandable that we are not going to entrust our hard-earned hair to the very people with scissors or clippers in their hands, whose interest is that we should have short hair.
I do realise that one day, I will need to start equalising my hair as it gets really long, and I'll need to deal with split ends. My wife has a (male) hairdresser in Rouen who has very long and beautiful hair, and perhaps might be very good. But not now, not for at least two years.
There are ways to cut one's own hair on http://feyeselftrim.livejournal.com/ - involving bringing all your hair to the front and then trimming yourself according to the style you want. That's probably what I will do in a couple or years or when / if I start getting split ends.
If we can't trust the man or woman with the scissors, I think we have every right to be concerned and stay away.

Anxiety before a haircut, even if only planning a light trim, is probably not all that uncommon -- at least not uncommon for those of us who like our hair looooong. At least I know for sure that I've experienced it, which is why nowadays I prefer the "Search & Destroy" method of chasing after individual split ends on my own, snipping them off whenever I see one -- which causes me to experience zero anxiety, because I'm in complete control of the situation.
When I was a kid, my dad used to suddenly announce (approximately every 3 weeks), "OK boys, haircut day today!" -- in which case, I can remember feeling what I now recognize as a panic attack. My brothers didn't like these haircuts, either; but we were given no choice in the matter.
Leaving my dad's house at age 18, getting a haircut or even light trim was totally my own choice forever after that; but still, occasionally I have felt that anxious feeling before a hair appointment with a professional hairstylist -- even when I've completely trusted the hair professional. Once you've experienced abusive treatment regarding the hair on your own head (and in my case, I experienced A LOT when I was young), it's a tough memory to erase out of your mind.

Hi Darrin,
I cannot comment on the anxiety of getting a trim. I am probably going to wait until I get closer to mid-back length to do that. But I am happy to hear you have a great stylist to do it for you! Are you at waist length already? If not, please keep it growing! Please be well my friend!
