Got stopped by a volunteer from the Southern Poverty Law Center, soliciting donations. She said I looked cool (well, I was wearing shades, LOL!), and that I looked like Jerry Garcia but more handsome!
I have less grey than poor old Jerry, but only because of henna/herbal dyes, and I admitted as much. Also, I'm still in the land of the living. As I recall, he was cremated and then buried in outer space. Dust to dust they say in the funeral service, and I suppose he went back to stardust, from whence everything on Earth came.
For some reason all the compliments I ever get are from black women. Although, if I put on a kilt that broadens the demographic, but that is O/T for a hair board! I'm married, but it is nice to pick up compliments (and rare).
Hi Alun,
Funny you should mention those compliments from black women as when I get my few, rare hair compliments that's generally who I receive them from. Also like you I too henna my hair and they are the ones who also comment on my hair color. However not that long ago I was in a supermarket and one young guy who works there did say I have "awesome hair"! He just said that to me out of the blue.I'm not looking for compliments but have to admit its nice when they are sent your way:) Cheers

I get most of my compliments from other hippie dudes. (Not counting all the smiles and fascination stares I get from little kids who love Santa Claus.)
Bill
My problem is that I get too many "Santa Claus" comments -- and not just from kids, but from pretty much ANYbody and EVERYbody!!

I also get the occasional and refreshing compliment on my hair. I do not "adjust' the natural color, which is generally an Auburn, copper, and white (er...platinum) blend. Which works well with my now all white moustache. Have been asked by strangers if I play guitar....I do. it's just accepted that longhairs are musicians in some minds, I suppose.
Thanks for sharing! And well deserved.
Hi elektros,
It's always very nice to hear of compliments received! I'm sure you deserved that compliment and did look cool! Kind of interesting that a lot of your compliments are from black women.
Ted
My experience is that black women are more comfortable complementing others - they comment freely and if they like what they see, they say so... Too bad others didn't follow.
you've got it - why not hear it from someone - whether you are married or not - us guys like to know we are attractive still - no matter how old we are - it's nice to know we still got it.
You do look cool.....
...funny you would mention Jerry... I have had that said.....even before the gray...
... so I took that as a complement too....
Thanks for sharing... The Spaf Man
I'm so glad to hear that you're "still in the land of the living" (unlike poor old Jerry - LOL)!!
Thanks for the fun post -- and I agree with you that us older guys (although I realize of course that you're still only in your very late 20s - LOL) get more compliments usually from women than from men (yes, here also Black women have often given me the compliment; but also Latinas, as well as occasionally a White woman -- but rarely do I hear a word out of any Asian women, even though my closest friend happens to be a Chinese female dance partner of mine, and I know plenty of other Asians, as the SF Bay Area is heavily populated with many... maybe they're just a bit more reserved?).
As somebody else commented in their reply, I think Black women tend to be more open & free about speaking to someone they don't know on the street, being very willing to pay someone a nice compliment, which I find to be a wonderful & very admirable quality in a person -- I wish more folks could be like that!

A number of times I've had black women say, "ooh, I love your hair" and while saying this start to reach out to touch my braid. All but once they've stopped themselves and asked if it was okay to feel my hair. I always get a kick out of their reaction to seeing my awesome mane. :)
I do tend to get awkward when I do receive a compliment. I'm usually like, "Thanks, I grew it myself."
Daniel
LOL, I'm going to make a point of remembering that line myself, I think it's a classic answer to a ("yes, I agree with you") sometimes-awkward-to-know-how-to-respond to the compliment moment.
Great hearing from you, Daniel, I remember you being fairly regular at MLHH a couple of years ago, glad to see you posting here again!

It IS nice to get compliments...for me, the mix is pretty broad, somewhere around knee I started getting more compliments from men, it is a bit odd when a couple approaches me and the guy who admires my hair. Of course, most compliments come from women, although not so restricted between races. I'm not complaining that the group that most wants to play with it is young women.
