Haven't posted a picture update in a while, so figured it was about time. This shows my hair both loose and in a tail. I end up having it in a tail most of the time, as with as thick as it is, it won't stay out of my way very well.
Frodo
This shows how I wear it for sleeping. I use the thicker fabric ties to loosely tie it in a segmented tail. I've found the thicker ties hold it loosely enough to not feel like a lump under my neck or back while still staying mostly in place while I sleep.
Hi Frodo,
This is a great idea! I just sleep with mine loose. But I suspect that will change when I get more length under my belt (pun intended!).
Ted
Awesome pic, JS. That is total dedication to the cause of long hair.
Thanks :D
Now that is an awesome mane, Frodo! It's 0.8 scotts long and 2.0 scotts thick!
(The "scott" is a unit of mane measurement. Neither metric or customary, the standard scott is maintained in a building in Richmond, California. Named for a prominent 20th and 21st Century maneologist known for extensive experience in mane measurement, the scott is noted for being unique among measurement units, in that it represents a different dimension when measuring length and when measuring diameters.
Compare "smoot".)
Bill
Well, there is an old tradition for naming measurement units after prominent scientists and inventors, so why not?? [grin]
Impressive mane there, Frodo! I especially love the segmentet tail you do while sleeping! That is a fantastic style I would love to do when the time comes! =)
Thanks, Raul. I settled on the segmented tail because it avoids spending 10-20 minutes detangling every morning.
Makes perfect sense at that length, though I would actually love to rock that look during daytime too, at least until the day comes and I finally manage mastering braiding my own hair :P
Good luck with braiding. I've tried a few times over the last several years and I still can't get the hang of it. I generally don't use the segmented tail other than when I'm sleeping as I have never gotten the hang of making neat, even segments like Scott (Absalom) does. I've always thought my results were kind of ungainly looking for going out in public.
These pics show how I'm wearing it for my new job. First I do a rough segmented tail with the narrower ties. This makes it easier to work with, and I've found it stays in place better. Then I coil it up and wrap it with another tie into a bundle at the base of my head.
Neat and professional looking, I like it a lot! :)
Thanks. For *this* job the main concern is keeping it out of the machinery, but I'm gaining a new understanding of why so many women with longer hair wear a bun so often. It is very convenient for getting long hair completely out of the way.
Hi Frodo,
This is a very nice way to keep your hair out of the way. I need to try to learn this even though I mainly like wearing my hair loose. I hope your new job is going well my friend!
Ted
It's actually fairly easy to do. I'd never put it in a bun until I started this job. After putting it in the segmented tail, I take hold of the topmost tie with one hand, leaving the index finger extended. With the other hand I wrap it once around that index finger, then carefully remove my finger from the resulting loop. After that I just keep wrapping the tail around that loop until I have the entire length wrapped up. Once I have it all bundled, I take a hair-tie and wrap it around the bundle two-three times and it's done. It usually stays up pretty well, although I've had to redo it partway through the day a couple of times. Then again, I'm working some pretty long days, especially when you add the commute time, and my environment is semi-strenuous, so that could be a factor.
GREAT LOOKING DUDE! from your Bro in Annapolis...
Thanks, James :)
Hi Frodo,
Wow! What an inspirational update! Your hair is fantastic looking! I love the color and thickness all the way to the ends! I can only hope to achieve that length! Thanks for giving me a boost to keep growing! Please stay well my friend!
Ted
Thanks, Ted

Your mane is impressively long. From what I see, almost as long as mine. (Knee length for me.) Looking good.
Scott
Thanks, Scott. As best I can see in the mirror, the extreme ends are maybe halfway between the bottom of my tuchus and my knees.
Jim
Wow! Impressive Frodo.
Bruce
Excellent mane!
I suspect you might be able to do the single stick bun I use. If you're interested, I could dig up the description and drawing of how to do it and post it here.
That *would* be interesting. While I suspect that method might not be suitable for my work environment, it would still be handy for other purposes where I might want my hair up out of the way. Thanks :D
What an inspiration, Mr. Frodo, a GREAT update!!!!! Thank you for taking the time to narrate so many details, as well as all of the photos.
That's an interesting way of making a bun, I've never tried the segmented tail idea before wrapping it up; but it makes perfect sense, now that I think of it!
Your hair is considerably longer than mine (which is currently only a couple of inches past my belt, which is my terminal length, as it has not grown any longer than this for over 3 years now).
Take care -- and thanks again for posting this update!
- Ken
(who normally is in San Francisco; but right now am typing on my boss's computer, in Castro Valley - LOL)
Thanks, Ken. I'm sure there are other methods, but I'd never learned any, as a bun just didn't seem to be my "thing". Then they told me I had to put it up for the new job, so I had to figure out something. I've seen women put up their hair with what appeared to be a few twists, so I improvised, and it seems to work.
I tried it without the segments, and it just was more of a pain to keep grouped together throughout the length as I wrapped it up. And like I said, it seems to stay together better throughout the work day when I segment it first, so that seems to be the way to go.
You've embraced your greys...good for you! That is something that I'm planning on doing at some point ;-)
My slogan for years (since my kids started giving me crap for having grey hair) has been "My hair can be whatever color it wants, as long as it stays attached to my head!" Would much rather have grey hair than no hair. So far the bargain seems to be working! :P
Hi JSFrodo,
About all that I can say is wow, wow again, and a triple wow. Very impressive update indeed, and a true inspiration to everyone.
Keep it growing,
David
Oh Mr. Frodo !!!
...almost to the tips of your furry little toes....
Seriously, that is just fantastic....thanks for sharing.
Wow! Very impressive Frodo!
And I'm really happy that a bun works well for your new job.
What's your ultimate length goal?
A.D.
Thanks, A.D. The only 'goal' I had was surpassed many moons ago. My original plan was to grow it out maybe six inches past my shoulders, but the longer it got the better I liked it. So now I'm pretty much letting it do what it wants. I'm just along for the ride :D
Wow! I come back from an extended hiatus and look at you now. Looking great! I'm so envious of your length as mine terminaled out at my belt 10 years ago.
Daniel
Thanks, Daniel. Not sure yet where my terminal length will be. Every time I resign myself to it not getting any longer, a month or three goes by and I realize it has gotten longer. We'll see what happens.
Absolutely awesome .... and the bun looks good too!
Best wishes on the new job.....
