So, it's already the middle of the summer.
Unfortunately, nothing really interesting is happening...
I'm just staying at home and coding the days away.
Hey .mkl,
Your hair is looking awesome! How long have you been growing it? Keep it growing.
Raymond
It's 14 months now.
Thanks! -- I'm hedging that my hair will come handy during the harsh upstate NY winter.
Where will you be, .mkl? I live in Syracuse, New York
I'm glad you kept growing your hair even though it seems like I recall you feared you might have to cut it once you went home for the summer...
Your hair looks great; but why are you just staying at home, doing "nothing really interesting"?
Heck, you are young, you look healthy -- YOU can make something happen, if you put your mind to it. When you get to be an old geezer like I am, then I don't blame you for just wanting to stay around the house; but you're too young to behave like an old geezer!
Heck, you still have a lot of the summer left to DO something... Go for a hike, go swimming in a lake, look for a fun summer job that will bring in a little cash, go out and meet some new people, take a dance class or something... the list is endless, really; but it's up to you to pursue whatever might interest you the most.

Ever think that this young whipper snapper might think that coding to be his greatest interest? Might not sound interesting to me and you, but it's guys like him that make all these techilogical communication devices work, and become outdated 3 minutes become it come out to market. If he is successful at it, this can be a money maker for him.

And I never learned how to spell. UHG!!

There's social payback when you see people enjoying your code. Like right now for me. (I wrote much of the code that makes MLHH work.)
Bill
Oops!!! I just revealed how stupid I am: I didn't know what he meant by the word, "coding" -- I just assumed it was some new hip term for wasting time, doing nothing in particular... My apologies!
Well, at least now I know something today that I didn't know yesterday -- even if there's mud on my face in order to learn it!
Again, my apologies!
- Ken
Yeah, Ken, it's lately become slang for "programming". It comes from the fact that programmers create computer code. "Coding" is a shorter word than "programming", so the English language will surely embrace it.
Computer "code" is what was originally called "instructions" ("code" is a shorter word), as contrasted to "data". Data means unchanging information like text, pictures, and videos. Code tells the computer what to do with the data. For example, when I click "Post Your Message" in a moment, code will tell the computer to take the data that I am now typing into the box and make a message out of it, add it to the main list of messages, etc.
Bill
Thanks, Bill, I appreciate the info & the explanation... I always learn a lot by hanging out here at MLHH!
Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday!
- Ken
When did this happen? Back when I did programming data was always changing.
Nothing has changed. I won't delve into minutia here, because it would be off topic. I'll be brief.
Ken has a web site. It has pictures and text on it. If he comes back next week, it will look exactly the same, because everything on it is data. There are no scripts, coding, or programs (all the same thing) to make it change. Of course, data can change if it is manually changed. That is beyond obvious.
MLHH, on the other hand, has a lot of instructions on it. If you post, it will decide whether to send your post to the moderators, or turn it into a message right then and post it. If you include a photo, it may change the photo file if you've asked that the photo be rotated, or if the photo is too large and needs to be shrunk. It will look to see if you have an avatar and if so, include that in your message. It will look to see what time it is, and put that in the message it makes. As the day goes on and people post followups to your message, it will add links to those followups at the bottom of your message.
"Coding" is writing such rules. It is a very different ballgame than just posting text and pictures, which are data.
When the guy said he was coding, he was likely doing important work. We have far too few people nowadays who know how to code. MLHH has had ongoing problems finding users who know how to code, and MLHH is run by its users who all volunteer their expertise and time. Without coders, there would be no MLHH.
I'm about to click on "Post Your Message". Without code, when I do that, nothing would happen. If I go to Ken's web site, I can click all over it until I am blue in the face, and nothing on his web site will change. It has no code on it.
Bill
Hi Matt,
Your hair is looking awesome my friend! I guess it's okay nothing's happening as long as the hair keeps growing! Glad to hear you are doing the coding. Sounds like productive use of your time! And yes, I think you're right. The long hair will come in handy in upstate New York in the Winter!
Ted
Hello .mkl !
Your hair is looking very cool, I hope the pressure to cut isn't still happening.... Take Care and have a good summer break!
