Hey guys, It's now been nine months since I decided to grow my hair, I didn't start all the way from a crew cut but the progress seems adequate as my hair is about 20cm (8 inches) long at the moment, even though the curls make it seem a bit shorter.
I had wanted to straighten my hair (permanently) several times, It's still a little too curly for my liking however I'm glad I didn't irreversibly straighten it as my hair has huge amount of volume, (I let you all talk me out of it :D ) even at this length it still likes to stick out sideways!!
first time posting code here, fingers crossed
Sorry, I really need a friend or some mirror magic to get the back
I also have a question about knots and combing, I seem to be getting a fair few knots in my hair lately and whenever i comb it I can feel these knots catching and pulling my hair out :o
any way to deal with that?

If you "Link" a photo, it will not be altered in any way, because it does not even exist on the MLHH server. Altering it is not possible.
If you "Upload" a photo to MLHH, large photos will be shrunk.
Hope this explanation helps.

Cheers Bill, I'll keep in mind to resize them when linking them
Who mama, those are some big ass pictures! :P
Congrats on making it to 9 months, my friend! And nice length reached already!
I would strong suggest against chemically straightening it, unless you are 100% content with having to shave it all off and starting from scratch in case you find the results less than appeasing :)
Remember, the weight of the hair itself will stretch some the the curls out, and it will look fantastic in due time. It's just that it will take you a bit longer to get to that stage, so all you really need it patience, and some good gels/mousse/beanies ;)
yeah my bad.
Thanks Raul
I did consider straightening it out a while ago but i had change my mind since as you all talked me out of it :)
Hi Stickeelion,
Your hair is coming along very nice! I would try not to get frustrated with the curling. As your hair gets longer and gets heavier it will probably lay down really well. It just takes much patience to get to that point! Please don't do anything to straighten it which would cause permanent damage! I wouldn't do anything though. It looks fine now and will with more length.
About the knots. Just start at the ends of your hair and very gently work the tangles and knots out with the comb and your fingers. Hopefully you don't get any that won't come out. If that happens, I would probably put conditioner in the hair and try to work it out that way. Hope this helps. Believe me, I go through this every morning. You should see the shed hairs that come out! Hope this helps! Please keep it growing!
Ted
I might have given the impression i still want to straighten my hair, but I had changed my mind and decided against straightening it.
With the knots is that the only way to deal with them? as it is quite tedious
Hi Stickeelion,
Well, that is the way I get tangles out. Maybe somebody with curly hair will post other methods I'm not aware of. My hair is more slightly wavy than curly. But I still get my share of tangles.
Ted
Good start, keep going: Don't worry about the curls, they look good when long.
Thanks for the kind words UK
Great start!
Your hair actually looks alot like mine did over 20 years ago. Take it from me, no matter how annoying they are between now and when your hair reaches mid back length, you will be glad you kept the natural curls later. Yes they are alot of work, and tangling will always be a problem if not in a segmented tail, but the attention and comments from hair admirerers makes it all worth it. Now my hair is pretty straight at the root and the further down the hair you go my hair goes wavy until near the ends I have very tight curls. Even when I have my hair in a segmented tail I still have that tight curl at the very end which gets alot of,"Awe, that so cute" from the young girls. Keep it growing onward and downward.
Daniel
Thank you Daniel, I'm definitely eager to see how it turns out, I also like the look of segmented ponytails, reminds me of vikings :D
Hey Stickeelion,
First of all, a big CONGRATS to you for making it through the first 9 months! I think you have a fantastic head of hair to work with -- and my philosophy is: the more curls, the better!
Tempting as it might be at times to cave in and straighten it, what you lose is quality in the texture of your hair, as well as the chemicals weaken the hair shaft; plus once somebody straightens it once, they usually decide to repeat the chemical process a few months later -- which further weakens the hair even more... Then comes unnecessary breakage, a ton of split ends, etc. etc., and on & on & on & on...
Re. the question about getting knots in your hair:
The longer your hair gets, the more you'll find, "conditioner is your friend!" (I go through more conditioner nowadays than shampoo, for example); but also try finger-combing first, THEN use a wide-toothe comb. And always untangle the ends of the hair first, before dragging a comb through your scalp.

Thank you for the compliments Ken :) It means a lot to me, I've often doubted my hair
Is combing wet hair ok for you hair because I find it works a lot better?
You're welcome! Re. combing wet hair, yes, combing is definitely OK; but experts advise against brushing wet hair, because brushes tend to pull and snap hair (hair is weakest when wet).... I do enjoy brushing my hair when it's dry, though, it gives my scalp a "tingly" sensation after I'm through with that ritual.

I vote no to straightening. I think your natural texture is beautiful, even more so as your hair continues to grow.
If you do want straight hair, I'd say use a flat iron to see the effect first before permanently straightening it.
Hey man,
The curls look great, although I can understand if they cause more frustration in this awkward stage.
For tangles/knots, what I do is try to pull the strands apart from the bottom, rather than forcing something through the tangle from the top. This tends to work for me and definitely seems to be gentler on the hair.
Thanks for the update.
Chris
Your hair suits you nicely without straightening. Just let grow and flow! You'll be pleased with the results.
Bruce
Hi Stickeelion, congrats on reaching 9 months! No doubt your hearing it from your family and friends now...keep persevering and you'll be hitting 1 year in no time at all!
-Tommy
Thanks Tommy, in fact when I first told my family i would be growing it out my brother said "You're such a girl" (Typical brother reaction haha) and my mum said she always wanted to see what I would look like with long hair and apparently tried to convince me when i was a little kid to grow it out, but neither have said much since
Hey Stickeelion....
Thanks for posting those great HUGE pics!
Just keep it growing....and be gentle with tangles....
...conditioner has helped me alot....I am glad your mum is supportive!
Take care and keep growin!
