So I'm way overdue for an update...but here is my 22 month update.
It's hard to believe that I'm closing in on 2 years, it's pretty surreal to think its been that long since I started. I'm still patiently waiting for the top hairs to reach my shoulder, they are getting very close now! Once that happens I haven't decided what I'll do. I'm leaning toward trimming the back to make everything 1 length, but I am undecided! I'm hesitant to trim anything still, as long as it still feels counter productive, I wont be trimming anything :)
Hi Tommy,
Wow! What a fantastic update! Your hair is just looking awesome my friend! And I would not do anything to it except enjoy it! Very very nice and I thank you for the inspiration! Please keep doing what you're doing! Have a great weekend and be well buddy!
Ted
Thank you Ted! I am definitely enjoying it! I appreciate your encouraging words, I've been getting a lot of grief lately. Sort of surprising that its been this long and all of a sudden everyone thinks I should hack it off!
-Tommy
Hi Tommy,
Well, I would guess you're getting grief now because of how good your hair looks. I think those people are simply jealous. Please keep it growing man! It's only going to get much better!
Ted
I think it's surprising who'll give you grief and just as surprising who'll give you compliments. Those longhair haters are a minority. They just have bigger mouths.
Hang in there!
Bruce
Hi Tommy,
Wow, great update and to think its been almost two years! You are definitely a natural as a longhair being that look just compliments your overall appearance.I feel you should hold off trimming especially since your hair looks neat and tidy as it is.Certainly no awkward stage there that I can see.Well done my friend.Cheers
Mârk
Thank you, I do think the look suits me as well :) I try to keep it brushed and well kept, to avoid the "homely" and "unkept looking" comments I get from some folks!
-Tommy
Well, Tommy, it's always great to see your updates and these pictures are sure no exception... It's great to see your progress. Your hair is fantastic - just beautiful.
Thank you Fitz! I'm glad you think its looks good!
-Tommy
Don't trim it! I think the natural shape is the best :)
I have to admit the the natural shape is starting to grow on me. I think I've probably got another 2-4 months to go before I decide which way to go.
-Tommy
Oh my god, I, I really don't know how to say it, but it's looking pretty AWESOME, it suits you very well.
As for the trimming, leave it in the way it is, only trim it if you got already an terminal lenght.
Keep it up man, it's looking pretty good.
Thank you! I appreciate the support and kind words! I'm probably going to wait 2-4 more months before deciding if/how to trim it.
-Tommy
Once that happens I haven't decided what I'll do. I'm leaning toward trimming the back to make everything 1 length, but I am undecided! I'm hesitant to trim anything still, as long as it still feels counter productive, I wont be trimming anything :)
Hey Tommy D,
Awesome hair, Dude!
Your hair has great length for twenty two (22) months.
You should do what you think best in regard to trimming your hair. My recommendation is that you not trim it. Let it keep growing. You can always trim it later.
Keep it growing and flowing!
Your long haired bro,
Raymond
Thanks Raymond, your progress has served as great inspiration the past 22 months!
-Tommy
Looking great. The shots of the back really show off how long it has grown.
Thanks,
Chris
I know what you mean...I never see the back, so when I do those pics it's sort of mind blowing haha!
-Tommy
Looks great, leave it be
Frodo
Your hair is magnificent, and I like the natural look.
My wife has been nagging me about equalizing trims, and was quite nasty when I suggested "come back in a couple of years"! I thought I might consider beginning to trim when my hair gets a little longer than yours, and go progressively - not more than 1/4 inch a month.
One thing I do realise is that there is a real mentality around trimming and cutting, especially when wives start banging drums and it becomes a euphemism of the "real" haircut. She is still attempting "damage control" and some measure of control.
I would agree with you. It seems right not to trim until it feels right, and only have it done by someone we really trust. That being said, I have grown fond of the natural "layered" look and the back going down to a sharp point.
Keep going and don't trim too soon.
Anthony
My blog
Yea, I've had my mother and another female friend say I should trim to keep it healthy and keep it growing. Thanks to everyone here I've been able to shoot down those theories by explaining to them I don't have any split ends (at least I've not seen any yet) and that I take preventative measures with my normal routine to prevent them.
I'm probably going to wait 2-4 more months before deciding if/how to trim it.
-Tommy
Adding my 2 cents here. Thick and rich brown hair that is just beautiful. Thanks for the update.
Tommy, my good friend!
Thank you for posting these wonderful pictures! Not only to they clearly demonstrate what good routines, care and dedication can result in, but they also serve as great inspiration and motivation to me in my goal of getting back to long hair!
I honestly can almost not fathom just how much your hair has grown since I first met you here, way back in late '12!
Hope you keep going and at least double it, buddy!
GREAT JOB!
You are welcome Raul! I know its hard to believe, and even harder to think we were basically at the same month/time when you had to start over last September. I'm glad my progress can inspire you even if its just a little bit! I think you have all the motivation you need though, and the results of your YT channel/videos speak for themselves! I know I enjoy following along and watching your updates when you post them.
-Tommy
Very glad to hear you are still following, my good friend!
Missing seeing some familiar MLHH faces on my channel, and I would be happy to see you more active there if and when you find the time!
Let me underline this again..your mane? GLORIOUSLY impressive! :)
Your hair looks amazing and it suits you very well. In reading your responses to some of the posts here, have you considered trimming the beard so it looks like a 3-5 days growth? I personally think that it may give you a very sophisticated look as you have great masculine facial features. Keep it growing man!
Thank you Tony. I have actually...to be honest I am not really sure how to keep it trimmed at the length I like. I have a Norelco electric razor/trimmer I use but it never looks right after I trim it, and I normally just shave it off and start over. I feel like I need a different tool. Do you have any suggestions/recommendations?
My beard grows very slowly, it's usually around 3-4 weeks that it hits that sweet spot of not being too thin, and not curling out and getting funky (like it is now). The 22 month pics I just took the other day and my beard is probably around 2 months of growth, however I did shave off the mustache during that span so its shorter.
-Tommy
I just use a beard trimmer. Not an electric shaver with a trimmer as an afterthought on the side, but just an electric beard trimmer. The one I currently have is a Remington that I picked up at K-Mart for about $20. Other brands work just fine as well as long as the tool is specifcally built to be a beard trimmer.
Daniel
Ha, ha..this is too funny. I just sent similar information to my younger brother. I think that because your beard is thinner or scarce it would look best if it's kept trimmed at a 3-5 day stubble level. I think that once you get the hang up of it, you will really like the new look. Here is a great link that will provide several options for you.

Keep that great hair growing. Best of luck man!
Thanks! Haha I think the one with the laser line is what I need :)
-Tommy
Ya, don't trim yet. Those shorter hairs are such a small percentage of your overall hair that you don't notice them and it would be a damn shame to lose that much length of great looking hair. Better to wait until your shortest hair reachs your minimum long hair goal.
Bruce
Thanks Bruce! I'm probably going to wait 2-4 more months before deciding if/how to trim it. I suspect my front hairs will be touching my shoulder at that point and I can decide if I want to even out the back or not.
-Tommy
You know I've always loved your updates. No offense to anyone, but you have one of the best long hair heads in the board!
Congrats!
Thanks Dave, I can say the same about you! I'm really starting to like the way my hair is turning out.
-Tommy
Lookin' really great Tommy!....(compare that to your avatar!)
Good Deal! Keep Growin!
All the best...The Spaf Man
GREAT update, Tommy, your hair looks absolutely wonderful!!!
Re. your hesitancy to trim yet, I always recommend honoring your "gut feelings" on these matters. You can always trim later -- there should be no feeling of rush or urgency over something like this. The exception to this rule would be if you were to ever seriously hate a look or style, feeling tempted to go back to short hair... That's when I recommend trimming; but otherwise, no!

Thanks Ken! I am sticking with my gut for now, no trims yet. I think my biggest hangup for now is that I hate the thought of taking a step backwards (as we know, a multi-month step!) in length. I want to be able to still pull my hair back in a tail, even after I trim it.
You have the perfect hair type for long hair.
It will continue to look nice and behave well for you the longer it gets!
Hi Tommy.
Because I have fine hair, I decided to trim the back to get all my hair to one length. Best decision I've ever made. 18 months later, my hair looks thicker and healthier. Look at my June postings and you'll see the results. Hope it helps!
