Q: "Would you be willing to cut your hair in order to secure employment?"
A: "I will not disfigure myself, merely because the sight of a long-haired man honestly expressing himself makes a few insecure people feel uncomfortable."
NEXT!!! A couple of decent job offers have come my way, with more pending.
Sorry for my recent absence. I am closing in on 11 months since my last haircut, and am really enjoying the beginning of what feels a bit like "long" hair again, after all these years! I'll post an update photo soon.
Frodo, congratulations on the new job! Vincent, welcome back! Welcome also to all of the MLHH's new members, and kudos to all of you who have posted updates since my last visit...

Thanks for the words
In my opinion, this is wrong, I think what matters is that you can get the job done, regardless of appearance or social class.
I don't see any other saying something about women with short hair or even worse, shaved heads. Nowdays, women with short hair or even those young women with sideshaves or undercuts are much more common than men with long hair, so why they don't go ask those girls to "Grown" some hair first before getting employed? This is BS.
Just a reminder, back in the 80's and 90's, undercuts were also very popular among men, especially on metalheads, that "tendency" went back but on the women which was something wild look in the past, on nowday's women is something like "beautiful", "cute".
In my country, those "tendencies" are everywere and they still got employed but, some guys like us with long hair, needs to meet the "Company Standards" before getting employed.
This thing happened to one of my neighbors, since I live here and since I was 8, he and his brother decided to grown they hair and they didn't stopped since that day.
Unfortunately, one of them was asked the same question you got, "Would you be willing to cut your hair in order to ensure your job?" And this company, it's very famous around here for making the decisions on their employees, it's an Ammo company called "Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos AKA CBC"
Not only he got forced by the job to do this, but he maded it for his girl and now I see he won't be the same again until that day, he maded some "Self-Mutilation" in my opinion.
Now, he's an another common short-haired again, his girlfriend dumped him and he was never the same since that day.
Fortunately, his old brother didn't maded anything on his hair and kept it long as always. When I can get sometime, I would share more details on their story and post a photo from those two brothers here.
Anyway, the thing is, do not give up for them, you need a place where you can feel happy and accept the way you are, without having to enter in that "Company Standards". Better jobs will come surely, I have faith in you.
Cheers
Hi Val,
Well kudos to you for your post and I have the same feelings when it comes to employment and the way I wear my hair.No way would I alter my appearance in such a way for any job that frankly could terminate at any time. Even if it were guaranteed long term a required hair cut is not negotiable.Try telling a woman the same thing during an interview and I'm sure that company would be hearing from her lawyer.Cheers

That was a fantastic response, Val. I really admire you.
I have some very dark clouds on the horizon as far as my own employment so it's good to hear of your determination and opportunities and the success of others.
I have just got back from my holidays in Brittany (see my blog), and my locks have taken a beating from the west wind from the Atlantic. On my trip out to the Glénans Archipelago (9 nautical miles each way), I tied up my ponytail, but my sides are still too short to do anything other than fly about all over the place. The hair ends only barely touch the ponytail point - so it's another 3 to 4 months before being out of awkward stage other than my front and top hair.
I'll do you an 11-month update at the end of August. It's unbelievable that I'm almost at my first year away from the clippers and scissors! And eight years since I stopped smoking!
As my wife went to work this morning and I took her to the railway station, we saw a middle-aged man of unkempt appearance and back-length hair. I had to lay down the fact that the difference is that I look after my hair! She still wants me squared off pageboy style. I have told her again that I am going for mid-back length. Only then will I consider equalising trims to get it all to a single length. Getting it all into the ponytail will make the difference...
It was nice to see a good number of long-haired men in Brittany and connected with the sea, from fishermen to sailing instructors. The style of many young men, a shock of hair on the top and buzzed up the back and sides is almost gruesome! I prefer being a good Baby Boomer!
Like you, Validus, I begin to enjoy the tickling on the top of my back and the movement in the wind. It still needs to be a lot longer, but I'm getting there.
Photos soon...

My blog
Hi Val,
As I close in on 3 years of being on dialysis, I have been thinking about this. They told me that a kidney transplant can stake from 3-5 years, maybe longer. When I get a transplant I will be able to go back to work. I have been telling my self I will not cut my hair for employment. I figure if an employer brings that up right away, there may be other things I may not like about them.
I am enjoying this journey and just don't see what hair length has to do with job performance. As long as it can be tied back for safety reasons, sanitation etc. So, NO I will NOT cut my hair for employment. And I certainly wouldn't expect anyone else to! Stand your ground Val! Please do not give in! And if you need a final say, just confer with your son! I know he will give you the correct answer:) Be well my friend and good luck in your search!
