Once again I am traveling for my work (Minnesota). During one of our early staff meetings, we were discussing appearance, demeanor, etc when in the public eye and in high profile situations. I brought up the topic of my ponytail asking if anyone thought that would be perceived negatively. One woman (50ish) said "Oh No...that makes you more approachable". She went on to say that when shopping or seeking information/advise, that she will choose a long haired older man over a trimmed younger guy....feeling that she will get a more direct and honest answer. There were nods of agreement around that table.
To be honest, I was a bit stunned, but delighted and wanted to share this with my MLHH family.

Hi Walter,
Hey, I like hearing of those kind of situations.I have to agree as I too feel if approaching a stranger who, happens to be a man,a longhaired one would make me feel more comfortable.I'm know that's judgmental but long hair softens the appearance and makes me think he's friendlier:) Deep down I'm sure that's not always the case but first impressions do matter. Thanks for sharing and good luck with your current project my friend.Cheers

I think it's a hoax or a conspiracy! They're trying to convince us that they're comfortable with our manes, and they're not jealous whatsoever! And once they've got us thinking that they're 'ok' with them, they'll shave our heads like Roman sun god worshipers! Keep your eyes open WT! Haha! :)
Hi Walter,
Thank you for sharing your most wonderful story, and it is always good to know that there are those of the opposite sex who appreciate longer hair on those of us with a few more years on the clock.
It reminds me of that rather flattering comment I received in Costco while standing in line a year or so ago, from an older lady who appreciated my hair, commenting on its thickness and good condition. These kind of kind words can really make one's day, and of course, I thanked her profusely for making MY day.
Cheers again to you, Walter!

I have had countless clients remark on my ponytail. All of them positive. Some even having me promise never to cut it....A promise easily kept.
That's really cool, Walter. Acceptance may be slow and gradual, but looks like it's moving (even if it is at a glacial pace).
I have had zero negative comments at my work - I have not really had any comments at all, actually, from employees or bosses - I work with seniors age 60 and older - I have a regular crowd that comes to our center every day - it is a great group - well balanced - almost 50/50 male to female and black and white - amazing, if you think about it... Well, I've got a lot of feedback from the folks who come to the center for services - one guy has told me over the months to keep going, it looks great, etc. - last week, he told me he thought my pony tail was real cool looking - he said it was a great look on me - I am sure I would get negative comments, too, if anyone had them to make - this crew say what they think... and that's a good thing.
Yes! MN has a decent sized Native population from what I understand and it borders states with even larger ones. Going through what I am, I think it is great that you can be yourself too. For me it is cultural as it ties me to my people, the earth and all of creation. For me the comments about being "gay" are becoming easier and easier to ignore and bat away as I become more comfortable with talking about my experience as a Native and European American. Keep on keeping on dude.
Glad to hear this Walter.... I work in a nursing home and none of the residents said anything bad to me.... one actually said they liked it...
Thanks for sharing... The Spaf Man
VERY interesting comment indeed, Walter, thanks so much for sharing this story, I love it!
I hope all is well with you Walter, and that your trip to Minnesota is a big success!
